Al-Qadr القدر
The Power
بِّسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ
PickthallLo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination.
Yusuf AliWe have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power:
The agreed readingTruly We sent it down on the Night of Decree. Both traditions read the sending-down the same way: the Qur'an came down whole on that night to the lowest heaven, and then to the Prophet a piece at a time across twenty-three years.
Urdu”اَنْزَلْنٰہُ“ کی ضمیر قرآن کی طرف لوٹتی ہے، حالانکہ اس کا ذکر پہلے نہیں آیا — اور یہی اس کی شان کا بیان ہے کہ نام لینے کی ضرورت ہی نہ رہی۔ ”لیلۃ القدر“ کو یہ نام اس لیے دیا گیا کہ اللہ کے ہاں اس کی قدر و منزلت بہت بڑی ہے، اور اس لیے بھی کہ اس میں بندوں کے معاملات مقدر کیے جاتے ہیں۔ یہ رمضان ہی کی راتوں میں سے ایک رات ہے، جیسا کہ ارشاد ہے ”رمضان کا مہینہ جس میں قرآن اتارا گیا“۔
Arabicالضمير في «أنزلناه» يعود إلى القرآن وإن لم يجرِ له ذكر، وفي ذلك تنويهٌ بشأنه حتى استُغني عن التصريح باسمه. وليلة القدر سُمِّيت بذلك لعظم شرفها وقدرها عند الله، ولِما يُقدَّر فيها من أمور العباد. وهي ليلة من ليالي رمضان، لقوله سبحانه: «شهر رمضان الذي أُنزل فيه القرآن».
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ
PickthallAh, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is!
Yusuf AliAnd what will explain to thee what the night of power is?
The agreed readingAnd what will tell you what the Night of Decree is? Both traditions gloss the question as set there to magnify the night rather than to inform - what is being asked about is past anything the one asked could have known of himself.
Urdu”اور آپ کو کیا معلوم کہ لیلۃ القدر کیا ہے؟“ یہ سوال اس رات کی عظمت جتانے اور اس پر حیرت میں ڈالنے کے لیے ہے۔ اس میں یہ اشارہ بھی ہے کہ اس کی فضیلت کی اصل حقیقت مخلوق کی رسائی سے آگے ہے، اسے پوری طرح اللہ ہی جانتا ہے۔ پھر اس کے بعد اتنا بیان کر دیا گیا جتنا سمجھ کے قریب لایا جا سکتا تھا۔
Arabicوما أدراك ما ليلة القدر؟ استفهامٌ للتعظيم والتعجيب من شأنها. وفيه إشارة إلى أن حقيقة فضلها فوق ما تبلغه معرفة الخلق، فلا يُحيط بها إلا الله. ثم جاء البيان بعده ليقرِّب من عظمتها ما يُطاق تقريبه.
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
PickthallThe Night of Power is better than a thousand months.

The agreed readingThe Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Both traditions add the same qualification in almost the same words: better than a thousand months that have no such night in them - so that what is done in this one night outweighs what is done across all of those.
Urduلیلۃ القدر ہزار مہینوں سے بہتر ہے، یعنی اُن ہزار مہینوں سے جن میں لیلۃ القدر نہ ہو۔ اس رات کا نیک عمل اس طویل مدت کے عمل سے بڑھ کر ہے۔ تھوڑا عمل بھی وقت اور اخلاص کے اعتبار سے زیادہ عمل پر فوقیت لے جاتا ہے، اور اللہ کو یہ اختیار ہے کہ جس زمانے کو چاہے فضیلت سے نوازے۔ چھوٹی عمروں والی اس امت پر یہ بہت بڑا انعام ہے۔
Arabicليلة القدر خير من ألف شهر ليس فيها ليلة قدر. فالعمل الصالح فيها خير من العمل في تلك المدة الطويلة. والعمل القليل قد يفضُل الكثير باعتبار الزمان والإخلاص، ولله أن يخصَّ من الأزمنة ما شاء بالفضل. وفي هذا تفضُّلٌ عظيم على هذه الأمَّة في قِصَر أعمارها.
تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ
PickthallThe angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.
Yusuf AliTherein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand:
The agreed readingThe angels and the Spirit come down in it, by their Lord's leave, with every command. Both traditions gloss the command as what God has decreed for the year ahead - from that night until the same night comes round again - and the coming down as made by His leave, not of their own.
Urduاس رات فرشتے اور روح اپنے رب کے حکم سے اترتے ہیں۔ ”روح“ سے مراد جبریل علیہ السلام ہیں، جن کا نام فرشتوں کے عام ذکر کے بعد الگ سے ان کی زائد فضیلت کی وجہ سے لیا گیا۔ وہ ہر اُس کام کے لیے اترتے ہیں جو اللہ نے اُس سال کے لیے مقرر فرمایا، اور ان کے اترنے میں وہ برکت اور رحمت ہے جو اس رات اہلِ زمین کو گھیر لیتی ہے۔
Arabicتنزَّل الملائكة والروح فيها بإذن ربهم. و«الروح» جبريل عليه السلام، خُصَّ بالذكر بعد العموم لمزيد فضله. وينزلون من أجل كل أمرٍ قضاه الله في تلك السنة، وفي نزولهم بركةٌ ورحمةٌ تحفُّ أهل الأرض في تلك الليلة.
سَلَٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ
Pickthall(The night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn.
Yusuf AliPeace!... This until the rise of morn!
The agreed readingPeace it is, until the break of dawn. Both traditions carry the two senses together: the night is peace all through, with no evil in it, and it is full of the greeting of peace given by the angels who come down in it, from the moment they descend until the dawn breaks.
Urdu”سلامتی ہے وہ رات، فجر طلوع ہونے تک۔“ یعنی وہ سراسر سلامتی اور امن ہے، اس میں کوئی شر اور کوئی اذیت نہیں، شروع سے لے کر طلوعِ فجر تک۔ اس نام کی ایک وجہ یہ بھی بیان کی گئی ہے کہ اس رات فرشتے اہلِ ایمان پر کثرت سے سلام بھیجتے ہیں۔ اور یوں یہ سورت اُس بہترین انجام پر ختم ہوتی ہے جو اُس رات کے شایانِ شان ہے جس میں ہدایت اتری۔
Arabicسلامٌ هي حتى مطلع الفجر. أي هي سلامةٌ وأمنٌ كلُّها، لا شرَّ فيها ولا أذى، من أولها إلى طلوع الفجر. وممَّا قيل في وجه التسمية كثرةُ سلام الملائكة فيها على المؤمنين. وبهذا خُتمت السورة على أحسن ما تُختم به ليلةٌ نزل فيها الهدى.
