Al-Buruj البروج
The Mansions of the Stars
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ
PickthallBy the heaven, holding mansions of the stars,
Yusuf AliBy the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs;
The agreed readingBy the sky of the constellations — the twelve stations the commentaries name, set out across it.
Urduقسم ہے برجوں والے آسمان کی — یعنی ان عظیم اور نمایاں منزلوں کی جن میں ستارے اور سیارے چلتے ہیں۔
Arabicقسمٌ بالسماءِ ذاتِ البروجِ، وهي المنازلُ العظيمةُ الظاهرةُ فيها التي تسيرُ فيها الكواكبُ.
وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ
PickthallAnd by the Promised Day.
Yusuf AliBy the promised Day (of Judgment);
The agreed readingand the Day promised — the Day of Resurrection, the commentaries agree, promised and not yet come.
Urduاور اس دن کی جس کا وعدہ کیا گیا ہے، یعنی قیامت کا دن، جس میں اللہ تمام مخلوق کو جمع کرے گا۔
Arabicواليومِ الموعودِ الذي وعدَ اللهُ الخلقَ أن يجمعَهم فيه، وهو يومُ القيامةِ.
وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ
PickthallAnd by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony,
Yusuf AliBy one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness;-
The agreed readingand a witness and what is witnessed — the commentaries offer several identifications and settle on none, so the oath is left in its own words.
Urduاور گواہی دینے والے کی، اور اس کی جس پر گواہی دی جائے گی۔
Arabicوشاهدٍ يشهدُ، ومشهودٍ يُشهَدُ عليه. وأُقسِمَ بهما تعظيمًا لشأنِ ما يأتي بعدَهما.
قُتِلَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ
Pickthall(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch
Yusuf AliWoe to the makers of the pit (of fire),
The agreed readingruin take the people of the trench — the trench, the commentaries gloss, being a long cut dug in the ground.
Urduہلاک ہوئے وہ خندقوں والے — یعنی جنہوں نے زمین میں گہری خندقیں کھودیں۔
Arabicلُعِنَ أصحابُ الأخدودِ، وهو الشقُّ العظيمُ الذي حفروه في الأرضِ.
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ
PickthallOf the fuel-fed fire,
Yusuf AliFire supplied (abundantly) with fuel:
The agreed readingof the fire with its fuel — a fire fed and kept burning, the commentaries gloss, in the trench itself.
Urduوہ آگ جو بہت زیادہ ایندھن ڈال کر بھڑکائی گئی تھی۔
Arabicالنارِ ذاتِ الوَقودِ، أي التي أُضرِمَتْ فيه وأُلقِيَ فيها حطبٌ كثيرٌ.
إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ
PickthallWhen they sat by it,
Yusuf AliBehold! they sat over against the (fire),
The agreed readingwhen they were seated over it — sitting on its edge, the commentaries gloss, on seats set there for them.
Urduجب وہ ان خندقوں کے کناروں پر بیٹھے ہوئے تھے۔
Arabicإذ هم قعودٌ على جوانبِ ذلك الأخدودِ ملازمون له.
وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ
PickthallAnd were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers.
Yusuf AliAnd they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers.
The agreed readingand were themselves witnesses of what they were doing to the believers. The commentaries carry the same account: believers were thrown into a burning trench for their belief, and those who did it sat and watched.
Urduاور جو کچھ وہ اہلِ ایمان کے ساتھ کر رہے تھے، خود اسے اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھ بھی رہے تھے۔ انہوں نے صرف حکم دینے پر اکتفا نہیں کیا بلکہ اس منظر کا تماشا بھی کیا۔
Arabicوهم على ما يفعلون بالمؤمنين من التعذيبِ حضورٌ يشهدونه بأعينِهم. فلم يكتفوا بالأمرِ به حتى تولَّوا مشاهدتَه.
وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ
PickthallThey had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise,
Yusuf AliAnd they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise!-
The agreed readingThey held nothing against them except that they believed in God, the Mighty, the Praised —
Urduاور انہیں ان لوگوں سے کوئی شکایت نہ تھی سوائے اس کے کہ وہ اللہ پر ایمان لے آئے تھے — اس اللہ پر جو غالب ہے، جسے کوئی مغلوب نہیں کر سکتا، اور جو ہر اعتبار سے قابلِ تعریف ہے۔ گویا ان کا واحد جرم ایمان تھا۔
Arabicوما عابوا عليهم شيئًا ولا نقَموا منهم إلا أن آمنوا باللهِ العزيزِ الذي لا يُغلَبُ، الحميدِ المحمودِ في كلِّ شيءٍ. فكان ذنبُهم الوحيدَ هو الإيمانُ.
ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
PickthallHim unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness.
Yusuf AliHim to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things.
The agreed readingto whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and God is witness over everything. The commentaries mark the point: the only charge was belief, and the One they believed in was watching.
Urduوہی ہے جس کے لیے آسمانوں اور زمین کی بادشاہی ہے، اور اللہ ہر چیز پر گواہ ہے، اس سے کچھ بھی پوشیدہ نہیں۔
Arabicالذي له وحدَه مُلكُ السماواتِ والأرضِ، واللهُ على كلِّ شيءٍ شهيدٌ لا يخفى عليه شيءٌ.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
PickthallLo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning.
Yusuf AliThose who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire.
The agreed readingThose who put the believing men and the believing women to the trial and then did not repent — for them is the punishment of Hell, and for them the punishment of the burning.
Urduبےشک جن لوگوں نے مومن مردوں اور مومن عورتوں کو ان کے دین سے پھیرنے کے لیے ستایا اور پھر توبہ بھی نہ کی، ان کے لیے جہنم کا عذاب ہے اور جلا ڈالنے والا عذاب ہے۔
Arabicإنَّ الذين عذَّبوا المؤمنين والمؤمناتِ ليصُدُّوهم عن دينِهم ثم لم يتوبوا، فلهم عذابُ جهنمَ، ولهم عذابُ النارِ المُحرِقةِ.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ
PickthallLo! those who believe and do good works, theirs will be Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Success.
Yusuf AliFor those who believe and do righteous deeds, will be Gardens; beneath which rivers flow: That is the great Salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires),
The agreed readingThose who believed and did right have Gardens with rivers running beneath them. That is the great triumph.
Urduبےشک جو لوگ ایمان لائے اور نیک عمل کیے، ان کے لیے ایسے باغ ہیں جن کے نیچے نہریں بہتی ہیں۔ یہی بڑی کامیابی ہے، جس کے سامنے ساری دنیا حقیر ہے۔
Arabicإنَّ الذين آمنوا وعمِلوا الصالحاتِ لهم جناتٌ تجري من تحتِها الأنهارُ. ذلك هو الفوزُ الكبيرُ الذي تصغُرُ الدنيا كلُّها دونَه.
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ
PickthallLo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern.
Yusuf AliTruly strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord.
The agreed readingYour Lord's grip is severe — severe on those who refused, the commentaries gloss, and it comes as He intends it.
Urduبےشک تیرے رب کی پکڑ بہت سخت ہے۔ ”بطش“ کے معنی زور اور شدت کے ساتھ پکڑنے کے ہیں — اگرچہ وہ کچھ عرصہ ڈھیل دے دیتا ہے۔
Arabicإنَّ بطشَ ربِّك بالظالمين لشديدٌ. والبطشُ الأخذُ بقوةٍ وعُنفٍ، وإن أمهلَهم حينًا.
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
PickthallLo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth,
Yusuf AliIt is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life).
The agreed readingHe it is who begins and repeats — nothing He intends is beyond Him, the commentaries gloss.
Urduبےشک وہی پہلی بار پیدا کرتا ہے اور وہی دوبارہ پیدا کرے گا؛ جو وہ چاہے اس سے کوئی چیز اسے عاجز نہیں کر سکتی۔
Arabicإنَّه هو يُبدِئُ الخلقَ ثم يُعيدُه، فلا يُعجِزُه شيءٌ مما يريدُ.
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ
PickthallAnd He is the Forgiving, the Loving,
Yusuf AliAnd He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness,
The agreed readingand He is the Forgiving, the Loving — forgiving to the believers who sin, the commentaries gloss, and showing love to those close to Him.
Urduاور وہ بخشنے والا ہے اس کو جو توبہ کرے، اور بہت محبت کرنے والا ہے — اپنے دوستوں سے محبت کرتا اور انہیں اپنی نوازشوں سے نوازتا ہے۔
Arabicوهو الغفورُ لمن تابَ من عبادِه، الوَدودُ الذي يُحِبُّ أولياءَه ويتودَّدُ إليهم بالكرامةِ.
ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ
PickthallLord of the Throne of Glory,
Yusuf AliLord of the Throne of Glory,
The agreed readingLord of the Throne, the Glorious — its maker and its owner, the commentaries gloss, and glorious in Himself.
Urduعرش کا مالک ہے، بڑی شان اور بزرگی والا، جس کے فضل و کرم کی کوئی حد نہیں۔
Arabicذو العرشِ المجيدُ، صاحبُ العظمةِ والمجدِ والكرمِ الذي لا يُدانيه أحدٌ.
فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
PickthallDoer of what He will.
Yusuf AliDoer (without let) of all that He intends.
The agreed readingdoer of whatever He intends. The commentaries take the names together as the answer to the trench: the One who forgives and loves is also the One nothing can stop.
Urduجو ارادہ کرے اسے کر گزرنے والا ہے؛ نہ کوئی اسے عاجز کر سکتا ہے اور نہ اس کے ارادے کے آگے کوئی رکاوٹ ٹھہر سکتی ہے۔
Arabicفعَّالٌ لما يريدُ، لا يُعجِزُه شيءٌ ولا يمتنعُ عليه مرادٌ ولا يَحُولُ دونَه حائلٌ.
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ
PickthallHath there come unto thee the story of the hosts
Yusuf AliHas the story reached thee, of the forces-
The agreed readingHas the account of the armies come to you — an account, the commentaries note, given as something to take warning from.
Urduکیا آپ ﷺ تک ان لشکروں کی خبر پہنچی ہے جو اپنے رسولوں کو جھٹلانے پر جمع ہوئے تھے؟
Arabicهل أتاك -أيها الرسولُ- خبرُ الجنودِ الذين تجمَّعوا على تكذيبِ رُسُلِهم؟
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ
PickthallOf Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud?
Yusuf AliOf Pharaoh and the Thamud?
The agreed readingof Pharaoh and Thamūd? The commentaries agree the two are named as cases already settled, so that what happened to them stands as the answer.
Urduیعنی فرعون اور ثمود۔ اللہ نے انہیں ان کے کفر کی وجہ سے ہلاک کر دیا، اور اس میں بعد والوں کے لیے عبرت ہے۔
Arabicفرعونَ وثمودَ. وقد أهلكَهم اللهُ بكفرِهم، وفي ذلك عبرةٌ لمن بعدَهم.
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍ
PickthallNay, but those who disbelieve live in denial
Yusuf AliAnd yet the Unbelievers (persist) in rejecting (the Truth)!
The agreed readingYet those who refuse persist in denying — persisting, the commentaries gloss, in the face of what has already been shown them.
Urduبلکہ یہ کافر تو مسلسل جھٹلانے میں لگے ہوئے ہیں اور اس سے باز نہیں آتے؛ پہلوں کے انجام سے انہوں نے کوئی عبرت نہ لی۔
Arabicبل الذين كفروا في تكذيبٍ مستمرٍّ لا يَرعَوون عنه، فلم يعتبِروا بما نزلَ بمن قبلَهم.
وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ
PickthallAnd Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them.
Yusuf AliBut Allah doth encompass them from behind!
The agreed readingand God encircles them from behind. The commentaries gloss it as there being no escaping Him for them.
Urduاور اللہ نے انہیں ہر طرف سے اپنے علم اور قدرت میں گھیر رکھا ہے؛ ان کی کوئی بات اس سے نہیں چھوٹتی اور نہ ان کے لیے اس سے بھاگنے کی کوئی راہ ہے۔
Arabicواللهُ من ورائِهم محيطٌ بهم علمًا وقدرةً، لا يفوتُه منهم شيءٌ ولا لهم منه مَهرَبٌ.
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ
PickthallNay, but it is a glorious Qur'an.
Yusuf AliNay, this is a Glorious Qur'an,
The agreed readingRather, it is a glorious Qur'ān — glorious and honoured, the commentaries gloss, and not what they called it.
Urduبلکہ یہ تو ایک بہت بلند مرتبہ قرآن ہے، ویسا نہیں جیسا یہ لوگ کہتے ہیں۔
Arabicبل هو قرآنٌ مجيدٌ عظيمُ الشأنِ، ليس كما يزعمون.
فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ
PickthallOn a guarded tablet.
Yusuf Ali(Inscribed) in a Tablet Preserved!
The agreed readingon a guarded tablet — guarded, the commentaries agree, from the devils and from any alteration.
Urduلوحِ محفوظ میں لکھا ہوا، جہاں نہ کوئی تبدیلی ہو سکتی ہے، نہ تحریف، نہ کمی اور نہ زیادتی۔
Arabicفي لوحٍ محفوظٍ من التبديلِ والتحريفِ والزيادةِ والنقصِ.
