Al-Mumtahanah

She that is to be examined

60:1#

PickthallO ye who believe! Choose not My enemy and your enemy for allies. Do ye give them friendship when they disbelieve in that truth which hath come unto you, driving out the messenger and you because ye believe in Allah, your Lord? If ye have come forth to strive in My way and seeking My good pleasure, (show them not friendship). Do ye show friendship unto them in secret, when I am Best Aware of what ye hide and what ye proclaim? And whosoever doeth it among you, he verily hath strayed from the right way.

Yusuf AliO ye who believe! Take not my enemies and yours as friends (or protectors),- offering them (your) love, even though they have rejected the Truth that has come to you, and have (on the contrary) driven out the Prophet and yourselves (from your homes), (simply) because ye believe in Allah your Lord! If ye have come out to strive in My Way and to seek My Good Pleasure, (take them not as friends), holding secret converse of love (and friendship) with them: for I know full well all that ye conceal and all that ye reveal. And any of you that does this has strayed from the Straight Path.

The agreed readingO you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, offering them affection, when they have refused the truth that has come to you, driving out the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in God your Lord. If you have gone out to strive in My way and to seek My good pleasure - you keep affection for them secret, and I know better what you hid and what you made known. And whoever of you does it has strayed from the level way. Both traditions carry the same occasion: Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a, an emigrant whose family was still in Mecca, sent word ahead of the Prophet's march, and this came down about it.
60:2#

PickthallIf they have the upper hand of you, they will be your foes, and will stretch out their hands and their tongues toward you with evil (intent), and they long for you to disbelieve.

Yusuf AliIf they were to get the better of you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you for evil: and they desire that ye should reject the Truth.

The agreed readingIf they get the upper hand of you they will be enemies to you, and stretch out their hands and their tongues against you with harm, and they would love you to refuse. The commentaries fill in the two limbs plainly - striking with the hands, abuse with the tongues - and note the last clause as the real measure of the friendship being offered.
60:3#

PickthallYour ties of kindred and your children will avail you naught upon the Day of Resurrection. He will part you. Allah is Seer of what ye do.

Yusuf AliOf no profit to you will be your relatives and your children on the Day of Judgment: He will judge between you: for Allah sees well all that ye do.

The agreed readingYour ties of kin will not benefit you, nor your children, on the Day of Resurrection. He will separate between you. And God sees what you do. The commentaries read this as answering the excuse directly: what was protected by the secret was family, and family is exactly what will not carry across that day.
60:4supplication#

PickthallThere is a goodly pattern for you in Abraham and those with him, when they told their folk: Lo! we are guiltless of you and all that ye worship beside Allah. We have done with you. And there hath arisen between us and you hostility and hate for ever until ye believe in Allah only - save that which Abraham promised his father (when he said): I will ask forgiveness for thee, though I own nothing for thee from Allah - Our Lord! In Thee we put our trust, and unto Thee we turn repentant, and unto Thee is the journeying.

Yusuf AliThere is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: "We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah: we have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever,- unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone": But not when Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for forgiveness for thee, though I have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah." (They prayed): "Our Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in repentance: to Thee is (our) Final Goal.

The agreed readingThere is a good example for you in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: We have nothing to do with you, nor with what you worship instead of God. We refuse you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred for ever, until you believe in God alone - except that Abraham said to his father: I will ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power for you against God at all. Our Lord, in You we have put our trust, and to You we have turned, and to You is the journey's end. The commentaries mark the exception carefully: the promise to the father is set apart from what is being held up as the example, not included in it.
60:5supplication#

PickthallOur Lord! Make us not a prey for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord! Lo! Thou, only Thou, are the Mighty, the Wise.

Yusuf Ali"Our Lord! Make us not a (test and) trial for the Unbelievers, but forgive us, our Lord! for Thou art the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

The agreed readingOur Lord, do not make us a trial for those who refused, and forgive us, our Lord. You are the Mighty, the Wise. The commentaries read the first request as being about what the enemy would conclude from a victory - do not let them be given power over us and take it as proof that they are in the right.
60:6#

PickthallVerily ye have in them a goodly pattern for everyone who looketh to Allah and the Last Day. And whosoever may turn away, lo! still Allah, He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.

Yusuf AliThere was indeed in them an excellent example for you to follow,- for those whose hope is in Allah and in the Last Day. But if any turn away, truly Allah is Free of all Wants, Worthy of all Praise.

The agreed readingThere was indeed a good example for you in them, for whoever hopes for God and the Last Day. And whoever turns away - God is the Self-sufficient, the Praiseworthy. The commentaries note the repetition and the oath before it as pressing the point harder, and read the qualifier as the test: the example only works on someone who is actually expecting that day.
60:7#

PickthallIt may be that Allah will ordain love between you and those of them with whom ye are at enmity. Allah is Mighty, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Yusuf AliIt may be that Allah will grant love (and friendship) between you and those whom ye (now) hold as enemies. For Allah has power (over all things); And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The agreed readingIt may be that God will put affection between you and those of them you have taken as enemies. And God has power, and God is Forgiving, Merciful. The commentaries read this as the sura's turn: what has just been forbidden is not permanent hostility but the present alliance, and the same people may become something else.
60:8#

PickthallAllah forbiddeth you not those who warred not against you on account of religion and drove you not out from your homes, that ye should show them kindness and deal justly with them. Lo! Allah loveth the just dealers.

Yusuf AliAllah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.

The agreed readingGod does not forbid you, regarding those who did not fight you over religion and did not drive you from your homes, that you deal kindly with them and fairly towards them. God loves those who deal fairly. Both traditions carry the same occasion: Qutayla, still on the old religion, came to her daughter Asma bint Abi Bakr with gifts and was turned away at the door, and this came down.
60:9#

PickthallAllah forbiddeth you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that ye make friends of them. Whosoever maketh friends of them - (All) such are wrong-doers.

Yusuf AliAllah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.

The agreed readingGod only forbids you, regarding those who fought you over religion and drove you from your homes and helped in driving you out, that you take them as allies. And whoever takes them as allies - those are the wrongdoers. The commentaries set this line against the one before it as a matched pair: the same construction twice, with the three conditions of the ban spelled out so nobody has to guess who is meant.
60:10#

PickthallO ye who believe! When believing women come unto you as fugitives, examine them. Allah is Best Aware of their faith. Then, if ye know them for true believers, send them not back unto the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them (the disbelievers), nor are they (the disbelievers) lawful for them. And give them (the disbelievers) that which they have spent (upon them). And it is no sin for you to marry such women when ye have given them their dues. And hold not to the ties of disbelieving women; and ask for (the return of) that which ye have spent; and let them (the disbelievers) ask for that which they have spent. That is the judgment of Allah. He judgeth between you. Allah is Knower, Wise.

Yusuf AliO ye who believe! When there come to you believing women refugees, examine (and test) them: Allah knows best as to their Faith: if ye ascertain that they are Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers. They are not lawful (wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for them. But pay the Unbelievers what they have spent (on their dower), and there will be no blame on you if ye marry them on payment of their dower to them. But hold not to the guardianship of unbelieving women: ask for what ye have spent on their dowers, and let the (Unbelievers) ask for what they have spent (on the dowers of women who come over to you). Such is the command of Allah: He judges (with justice) between you. And Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom.

The agreed readingO you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants, test them. God knows best about their faith. Then if you know them to be believers, do not send them back to those who refused. They are not lawful for them, nor are those men lawful for them. And give the men what they have spent. And there is no blame on you if you marry them, when you have given them their bridal gifts. And do not hold on to the marriage ties of women who refuse. And ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is God's judgement; He judges between you, and God is Knowing, Wise. The commentaries set it after the treaty at al-Hudaybiya, under which those who came over were to be returned, and gloss the testing as putting the woman's own reason for coming to the question.
60:11#

PickthallAnd if any of your wives have gone from you unto the disbelievers and afterward ye have your turn (of triumph), then give unto those whose wives have gone the like of that which they have spent, and keep your duty to Allah in Whom ye are believers.

Yusuf AliAnd if any of your wives deserts you to the Unbelievers, and ye have an accession (by the coming over of a woman from the other side), then pay to those whose wives have deserted the equivalent of what they had spent (on their dower). And fear Allah, in Whom ye believe.

The agreed readingAnd if any of your wives has slipped away from you to those who refused, and then your turn comes, give those whose wives have gone the like of what they had spent. And be mindful of God, in whom you believe. The commentaries read it as settling the same account from the other side, so that a man does not carry the loss of what he had paid.
60:12#

PickthallO Prophet! If believing women come unto thee, taking oath of allegiance unto thee that they will ascribe no thing as partner unto Allah, and will neither steal nor commit adultery nor kill their children, nor produce any lie that they have devised between their hands and feet, nor disobey thee in what is right, then accept their allegiance and ask Allah to forgive them. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Yusuf AliO Prophet! When believing women come to thee to take the oath of fealty to thee, that they will not associate in worship any other thing whatever with Allah, that they will not steal, that they will not commit adultery (or fornication), that they will not kill their children, that they will not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood, and that they will not disobey thee in any just matter,- then do thou receive their fealty, and pray to Allah for the forgiveness (of their sins): for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The agreed readingO Prophet, when believing women come to you pledging to you that they will set up nothing as a partner with God, and will not steal, and will not commit unlawful intercourse, and will not kill their children, and will not bring a slander they have invented between their hands and their feet, and will not disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask God to forgive them. God is Forgiving, Merciful. The commentaries gloss the killing of children as the burying of infant daughters that was done before Islam, and the invented slander as a woman attaching a child to her husband that is not his.
60:13#

PickthallO ye who believe! Be not friendly with a folk with whom Allah is wroth, (a folk) who have despaired of the Hereafter as the disbelievers despair of those who are in the graves.

Yusuf AliO ye who believe! Turn not (for friendship) to people on whom is the Wrath of Allah, of the Hereafter they are already in despair, just as the Unbelievers are in despair about those (buried) in graves.

The agreed readingO you who believe, do not take as allies a people God is angry with, who have despaired of the hereafter as those who refuse have despaired of the people in the graves. The commentaries note that the sura ends on the command it opened with, and read the likeness as being about a certainty that has already been given up on.
