The Letter "Saad"

38:1#
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ صٓ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ذِى ٱلذِّكْرِ

PickthallSad. By the renowned Qur'an,

Yusuf AliSad: By the Qur'an, Full of Admonition: (This is the Truth).

The agreed readingSad. A single Arabic letter of the kind that opens certain surahs, recited as a letter; its certain meaning is left with God. And an oath by the Qur'an, which carries the Reminder.
38:2#
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى عِزَّةٍ وَشِقَاقٍ

PickthallNay, but those who disbelieve are in false pride and schism.

Yusuf AliBut the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism.

The agreed readingRather, those who refuse are wrapped in self-importance and set against the Prophet in open opposition.
38:3#
كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍ فَنَادَوا۟ وَّلَاتَ حِينَ مَنَاصٍ

PickthallHow many a generation We destroyed before them, and they cried out when it was no longer the time for escape!

Yusuf AliHow many generations before them did We destroy? In the end they cried (for mercy)- when there was no longer time for being saved!

The agreed readingHow many a generation God destroyed before them - and they cried out when the punishment fell, but it was no longer a time of escape.
38:4#
وَعَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ وَقَالَ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا سَٰحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ

PickthallAnd they marvel that a warner from among themselves hath come unto them, and the disbelievers say: This is a wizard, a charlatan.

Yusuf AliSo they wonder that a Warner has come to them from among themselves! and the Unbelievers say, "This is a sorcerer telling lies!

The agreed readingThey found it strange that a warner should come to them from among themselves, and those who refuse said: this is a sorcerer, a liar.
38:5#
أَجَعَلَ ٱلْـَٔالِهَةَ إِلَٰهًا وَٰحِدًا إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عُجَابٌ

PickthallMaketh he the gods One Allah? Lo! that is an astounding thing.

Yusuf Ali"Has he made the gods (all) into one Allah? Truly this is a wonderful thing!"

The agreed readingHas he made the gods one God? That, they said, is an astonishing thing - as though one God could not hold all creation.
38:6#
وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِنْهُمْ أَنِ ٱمْشُوا۟ وَٱصْبِرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمْ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ يُرَادُ

PickthallThe chiefs among them go about, exhorting: Go and be staunch to your gods! Lo! this is a thing designed.

Yusuf AliAnd the leader among them go away (impatiently), (saying), "Walk ye away, and remain constant to your gods! For this is truly a thing designed (against you)!

The agreed readingAnd the chiefs among them went off saying: walk away, and hold fast to your gods; this is something aimed at us.
38:7#
مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَٰذَا فِى ٱلْمِلَّةِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا ٱخْتِلَٰقٌ

PickthallWe have not heard of this in later religion. This is naught but an invention.

Yusuf Ali"We never heard (the like) of this among the people of these latter days: this is nothing but a made-up tale!"

The agreed readingWe never heard of this in the later religion; this is nothing but something he has made up.
38:8#
أَءُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّ مِّن ذِكْرِى بَل لَّمَّا يَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِ

PickthallHath the reminder been unto him (alone) among us? Nay, but they are in doubt concerning My reminder; nay but they have not yet tasted My doom.

Yusuf Ali"What! has the Message been sent to him - (Of all persons) among us?"... but they are in doubt concerning My (Own) Message! Nay, they have not yet tasted My Punishment!

The agreed readingHas the Reminder been sent down on him out of all of us? No - they are in doubt about the Reminder; no - they have not yet tasted God's punishment.
38:9#
أَمْ عِندَهُمْ خَزَآئِنُ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْوَهَّابِ

PickthallOr are theirs the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord, the Mighty, the Bestower?

Yusuf AliOr have they the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord,- the Exalted in Power, the Grantor of Bounties without measure?

The agreed readingOr do they hold the storehouses of your Lord's mercy - the Mighty, the Bestower - to hand out prophethood to whom they please?
38:10#
أَمْ لَهُم مُّلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَلْيَرْتَقُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَسْبَٰبِ

PickthallOr is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them theirs? Then let them ascend by ropes!

Yusuf AliOr have they the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between? If so, let them mount up with the ropes and means (to reach that end)!

The agreed readingOr is the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between them theirs? Then let them climb up by every means and reach it.
38:11#
جُندٌ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ

PickthallA defeated host are (all) the factions that are there.

Yusuf AliBut there - will be put to flight even a host of confederates.

The agreed readingThere, in their denial of you, they are a paltry host, one more of the routed factions.
38:12#
كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو ٱلْأَوْتَادِ

PickthallThe folk of Noah before them denied (their messenger) and (so did the tribe of) A'ad, and Pharaoh firmly planted,

Yusuf AliBefore them (were many who) rejected messengers,- the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes,

The agreed readingBefore them the people of Noah denied their messenger, and Ad did, and Pharaoh of the stakes, whose cruelty the commentaries describe.
38:13#
وَثَمُودُ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍ وَأَصْحَٰبُ لْـَٔيْكَةِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ

PickthallAnd (the tribe of) Thamud, and the folk of Lot, and the dwellers in the wood: these were the factions.

Yusuf AliAnd Thamud, and the people of Lut, and the Companions of the Wood; - such were the Confederates.

The agreed readingand Thamud, and the people of Lot, and the people of the thicket - the commentaries name them the people of Shuayb. Those were the factions.
38:14#
إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ

PickthallNot one of them but did deny the messengers, therefor My doom was justified,

Yusuf AliNot one (of them) but rejected the messengers, but My punishment came justly and inevitably (on them).

The agreed readingNot one of them but denied the messengers, since to deny one messenger is to deny them all - so God's punishment fell due.
38:15#
وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقٍ

PickthallThese wait for but one Shout, there will be no second thereto.

Yusuf AliThese (today) only wait for a single mighty Blast, which (when it comes) will brook no delay.

The agreed readingAnd these are waiting for nothing but a single cry, which will allow them no pause and no return.
38:16#
وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ

PickthallThey say: Our Lord! Hasten on for us our fate before the Day of Reckoning.

Yusuf AliThey say: "Our Lord! hasten to us our sentence (even) before the Day of Account!"

The agreed readingAnd they say, mocking: our Lord, hurry our share to us before the Day of Reckoning.
38:17#
ٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلْأَيْدِ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

PickthallBear with what they say, and remember Our bondman David, lord of might, Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).

Yusuf AliHave patience at what they say, and remember our servant David, the man of strength: for he ever turned (to Allah).

The agreed readingBear patiently what they say, and remember God's servant David, the man of strength - strength in worship, the commentaries say, for he was ever turning back to God.
38:18#
إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ

PickthallLo! We subdued the hills to hymn the praises (of their Lord) with him at nightfall and sunrise,

Yusuf AliIt was We that made the hills declare, in unison with him, Our Praises, at eventide and at break of day,

The agreed readingGod made the mountains join him in glorifying God, at evening and at the rising of the sun.
38:19#
وَٱلطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةً كُلٌّ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

PickthallAnd the birds assembled; all were turning unto Him.

Yusuf AliAnd the birds gathered (in assemblies): all with him did turn (to Allah).

The agreed readingAnd the birds too, gathered in to him and glorifying with him - every one of them ever turning back to God.
38:20#
وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ

PickthallWe made his kingdom strong and gave him wisdom and decisive speech.

Yusuf AliWe strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment in speech and decision.

The agreed readingAnd God made his kingdom strong, and gave him wisdom and the deciding word that settles a matter.
38:21#
وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا۟ ٱلْمِحْرَابَ

PickthallAnd hath the story of the litigants come unto thee? How they climbed the wall into the royal chamber;

Yusuf AliHas the Story of the Disputants reached thee? Behold, they climbed over the wall of the private chamber;

The agreed readingHas the story of the litigants reached you - when they climbed the wall into the private chamber?
38:22#
إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ دَاوُۥدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ خَصْمَانِ بَغَىٰ بَعْضُنَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَٱهْدِنَآ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ

PickthallHow they burst in upon David, and he was afraid of them. They said: Be not afraid! (We are) two litigants, one of whom hath wronged the other, therefor judge aright between us; be not unjust; and show us the fair way.

Yusuf AliWhen they entered the presence of David, and he was terrified of them, they said: "Fear not: we are two disputants, one of whom has wronged the other: Decide now between us with truth, and treat us not with injustice, but guide us to the even Path..

The agreed readingWhen they came in upon David and he took fright at them, they said: do not be afraid. We are two litigants, one of whom has wronged the other; so judge between us with the truth, do not go beyond what is right, and guide us to the level road.
38:23#
إِنَّ هَٰذَآ أَخِى لَهُۥ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِىَ نَعْجَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ

PickthallLo! this my brother hath ninety and nine ewes while I had one ewe; and he said: Entrust it to me, and he conquered me in speech.

Yusuf Ali"This man is my brother: He has nine and ninety ewes, and I have (but) one: Yet he says, 'commit her to my care,' and is (moreover) harsh to me in speech."

The agreed readingThis is my brother; he has ninety-nine ewes and I have one, and he said: put it in my charge - and he overbore me in the argument.
38:24#
قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ

Pickthall(David) said: He hath wronged thee in demanding thine ewe in addition to his ewes, and lo! many partners oppress one another, save such as believe and do good works, and they are few. And David guessed that We had tried him, and he sought forgiveness of his Lord, and he bowed himself and fell down prostrate and repented.

Yusuf Ali(David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"... and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance).

The agreed readingDavid said: he has wronged you in asking for your ewe to add to his own. Many partners do wrong one another, except those who believe and do good, and they are few. And David realised that God had tested him, so he asked his Lord's forgiveness, and bowed low and turned to Him.
38:25#
فَغَفَرْنَا لَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

PickthallSo We forgave him that; and lo! he had access to Our presence and a happy journey's end.

Yusuf AliSo We forgave him this (lapse): he enjoyed, indeed, a Near Approach to Us, and a beautiful place of (Final) Return.

The agreed readingSo God forgave him that; and he has nearness with God and a good place to return to.
38:26#
يَٰدَاوُۥدُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَٰكَ خَلِيفَةً فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌۢ بِمَا نَسُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْحِسَابِ

Pickthall(And it was said unto him): O David! Lo! We have set thee as a viceroy in the earth; therefor judge aright between mankind, and follow not desire that it beguile thee from the way of Allah. Lo! those who wander from the way of Allah have an awful doom, forasmuch as they forgot the Day of Reckoning.

Yusuf AliO David! We did indeed make thee a vicegerent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah: for those who wander astray from the Path of Allah, is a Penalty Grievous, for that they forget the Day of Account.

The agreed readingDavid, God has set you as a successor in the land, so judge between people with the truth and do not follow desire, or it will lead you astray from God's way. Those who stray from God's way have a severe punishment, because they forgot the Day of Reckoning.
38:27#
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَٰطِلًا ذَٰلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ

PickthallAnd We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in vain. That is the opinion of those who disbelieve. And woe unto those who disbelieve, from the Fire!

Yusuf AliNot without purpose did We create heaven and earth and all between! that were the thought of Unbelievers! but woe to the Unbelievers because of the Fire (of Hell)!

The agreed readingGod did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them for nothing. That is the guess of those who refuse - and woe to those who refuse, from the Fire.
38:28#
أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ كَٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ كَٱلْفُجَّارِ

PickthallShall We treat those who believe and do good works as those who spread corruption in the earth; or shall We treat the pious as the wicked?

Yusuf AliShall We treat those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, the same as those who do mischief on earth? Shall We treat those who guard against evil, the same as those who turn aside from the right?

The agreed readingShall God treat those who believe and do good like those who spread ruin in the land, or treat those who guard themselves like the corrupt?
38:29#
كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَٰرَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ

Pickthall(This is) a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect.

Yusuf Ali(Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto thee, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition.

The agreed readingA Book God has sent down to you, full of blessing, so that they may ponder its signs and those with understanding may take heed.
38:30#
وَوَهَبْنَا لِدَاوُۥدَ سُلَيْمَٰنَ نِعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

PickthallAnd We bestowed on David, Solomon. How excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).

Yusuf AliTo David We gave Solomon (for a son),- How excellent in Our service! Ever did he turn (to Us)!

The agreed readingAnd God gave David Solomon. What an excellent servant - he was ever turning back to God.
38:31#
إِذْ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ ٱلصَّٰفِنَٰتُ ٱلْجِيَادُ

PickthallWhen there were shown to him at eventide lightfooted coursers

Yusuf AliBehold, there were brought before him, at eventide coursers of the highest breeding, and swift of foot;

The agreed readingWhen the finely bred horses, standing still and swift, were shown to him in the late afternoon,
38:32#
فَقَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَحْبَبْتُ حُبَّ ٱلْخَيْرِ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّى حَتَّىٰ تَوَارَتْ بِٱلْحِجَابِ

PickthallAnd he said: Lo! I have preferred the good things (of the world) to the remembrance of my Lord; till they were taken out of sight behind the curtain.

Yusuf AliAnd he said, "Truly do I love the love of good, with a view to the glory of my Lord,"- until (the sun) was hidden in the veil (of night):

The agreed readingand he said: I have loved the love of good things over the remembrance of my Lord - until the sun was hidden behind the veil.
38:33#
رُدُّوهَا عَلَىَّ فَطَفِقَ مَسْحًۢا بِٱلسُّوقِ وَٱلْأَعْنَاقِ

Pickthall(Then he said): Bring them back to me, and fell to slashing (with his sword their) legs and necks.

Yusuf Ali"Bring them back to me." then began he to pass his hand over (their) legs and their necks.

The agreed readingBring them back to me, he said; and he set about passing his hand over their legs and necks.
38:34#
وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا سُلَيْمَٰنَ وَأَلْقَيْنَا عَلَىٰ كُرْسِيِّهِۦ جَسَدًا ثُمَّ أَنَابَ

PickthallAnd verily We tried Solomon, and set upon his throne a (mere) body. Then did he repent.

Yusuf AliAnd We did try Solomon: We placed on his throne a body (without life); but he did turn (to Us in true devotion):

The agreed readingAnd God tested Solomon, and cast upon his throne a mere body; then he turned back to God.
38:35#
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَهَبْ لِى مُلْكًا لَّا يَنۢبَغِى لِأَحَدٍ مِّنۢ بَعْدِىٓ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْوَهَّابُ

PickthallHe said: My Lord! Forgive me and bestow on me sovereignty such as shall not belong to any after me. Lo! Thou art the Bestower.

Yusuf AliHe said, "O my Lord! Forgive me, and grant me a kingdom which, (it may be), suits not another after me: for Thou art the Grantor of Bounties (without measure).

The agreed readingHe said: my Lord, forgive me, and give me a kingdom that will not be fitting for anyone after me. You are the Bestower.
38:36#
فَسَخَّرْنَا لَهُ ٱلرِّيحَ تَجْرِى بِأَمْرِهِۦ رُخَآءً حَيْثُ أَصَابَ

PickthallSo We made the wind subservient unto him, setting fair by his command whithersoever he intended.

Yusuf AliThen We subjected the wind to his power, to flow gently to his order, Whithersoever he willed,-

The agreed readingSo God made the wind subject to him, running gently at his command wherever he directed it,
38:37#
وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ كُلَّ بَنَّآءٍ وَغَوَّاصٍ

PickthallAnd the unruly, every builder and diver (made We subservient),

Yusuf AliAs also the evil ones, (including) every kind of builder and diver,-

The agreed readingand the satans too - every builder of wonders and every diver who brought up pearls,
38:38#
وَءَاخَرِينَ مُقَرَّنِينَ فِى ٱلْأَصْفَادِ

PickthallAnd others linked together in chains,

Yusuf AliAs also others bound together in fetters.

The agreed readingand others among them bound together in fetters, their hands gathered to their necks.
38:39#
هَٰذَا عَطَآؤُنَا فَٱمْنُنْ أَوْ أَمْسِكْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

Pickthall(Saying): This is Our gift, so bestow thou, or withhold, without reckoning.

Yusuf Ali"Such are Our Bounties: whether thou bestow them (on others) or withhold them, no account will be asked."

The agreed readingThis is Our gift to you, so give of it or hold it back, with no reckoning against you for either.
38:40#
وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

PickthallAnd lo! he hath favour with Us, and a happy journey's end.

Yusuf AliAnd he enjoyed, indeed, a Near Approach to Us, and a beautiful Place of (Final) Return.

The agreed readingAnd he has nearness with God and a good place to return to - the same seal as was set on David.
38:41#
وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَآ أَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ بِنُصْبٍ وَعَذَابٍ

PickthallAnd make mention (O Muhammad) of Our bondman Job, when he cried unto his Lord (saying): Lo! the devil doth afflict me with distress and torment.

Yusuf AliCommemorate Our Servant Job. Behold he cried to his Lord: "The Evil One has afflicted me with distress and suffering!"

The agreed readingAnd remember God's servant Job, when he called to his Lord: Satan has touched me with hardship and pain.
38:42#
ٱرْكُضْ بِرِجْلِكَ هَٰذَا مُغْتَسَلٌۢ بَارِدٌ وَشَرَابٌ

Pickthall(And it was said unto him): Strike the ground with thy foot. This (spring) is a cool bath and a refreshing drink.

Yusuf Ali(The command was given:) "Strike with thy foot: here is (water) wherein to wash, cool and refreshing, and (water) to drink."

The agreed readingStrike with your foot - and a spring broke open. This is a cool washing-place and a drink.
38:43#
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ أَهْلَهُۥ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ

PickthallAnd We bestowed on him (again) his household and therewith the like thereof, a mercy from Us, and a memorial for men of understanding.

Yusuf AliAnd We gave him (back) his people, and doubled their number,- as a Grace from Ourselves, and a thing for commemoration, for all who have Understanding.

The agreed readingAnd God gave him back his household and the like of them with them, as a mercy from Him and a reminder for those with understanding.
38:44#
وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ ضِغْثًا فَٱضْرِب بِّهِۦ وَلَا تَحْنَثْ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَٰهُ صَابِرًا نِّعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

PickthallAnd (it was said unto him): Take in thine hand a branch and smite therewith, and break not thine oath. Lo! We found him steadfast, how excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (to his Lord).

Yusuf Ali"And take in thy hand a little grass, and strike therewith: and break not (thy oath)." Truly We found him full of patience and constancy. How excellent in Our service! ever did he turn (to Us)!

The agreed readingAnd take in your hand a bundle of twigs and strike with it, and do not break your oath. God found him steadfast. What an excellent servant - he was ever turning back to God.
38:45#
وَٱذْكُرْ عِبَٰدَنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ أُو۟لِى ٱلْأَيْدِى وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرِ

PickthallAnd make mention of Our bondmen, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, men of parts and vision.

Yusuf AliAnd commemorate Our Servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, possessors of Power and Vision.

The agreed readingAnd remember God's servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, men of strength in worship and of clear sight in religion.
38:46#
إِنَّآ أَخْلَصْنَٰهُم بِخَالِصَةٍ ذِكْرَى ٱلدَّارِ

PickthallLo! We purified them with a pure thought, remembrance of the Home (of the Hereafter).

Yusuf AliVerily We did choose them for a special (purpose)- proclaiming the Message of the Hereafter.

The agreed readingGod set them apart with a quality all their own: the remembrance of the Home to come.
38:47#
وَإِنَّهُمْ عِندَنَا لَمِنَ ٱلْمُصْطَفَيْنَ ٱلْأَخْيَارِ

PickthallLo! in Our sight they are verily of the elect, the excellent.

Yusuf AliThey were, in Our sight, truly, of the company of the Elect and the Good.

The agreed readingAnd in God's sight they are among the chosen and the best, picked out from all the rest.
38:48#
وَٱذْكُرْ إِسْمَٰعِيلَ وَٱلْيَسَعَ وَذَا ٱلْكِفْلِ وَكُلٌّ مِّنَ ٱلْأَخْيَارِ

PickthallAnd make mention of Ishmael and Elisha and Dhu'l-Kifl. All are of the chosen.

Yusuf AliAnd commemorate Isma'il, Elisha, and Zul-Kifl: Each of them was of the Company of the Good.

The agreed readingAnd remember Ishmael and Elisha and Dhu al-Kifl - every one of them among the best.
38:49#
هَٰذَا ذِكْرٌ وَإِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ لَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

PickthallThis is a reminder. And lo! for those who ward off (evil) is a happy journey's end,

Yusuf AliThis is a Message (of admonition): and verily, for the righteous, is a beautiful Place of (Final) Return,-

The agreed readingThis is a reminder. And for those who guard themselves there is a good place to return to:
38:50#
جَنَّٰتِ عَدْنٍ مُّفَتَّحَةً لَّهُمُ ٱلْأَبْوَٰبُ

PickthallGardens of Eden, whereof the gates are opened for them,

Yusuf AliGardens of Eternity, whose doors will (ever) be open to them;

The agreed readingGardens of lasting residence, whose gates stand open for them - they find them open, the commentaries note, and need not wait.
38:51#
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِفَٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ وَشَرَابٍ

PickthallWherein, reclining, they call for plenteous fruit and cool drink (that is) therein.

Yusuf AliTherein will they recline (at ease): Therein can they call (at pleasure) for fruit in abundance, and (delicious) drink;

The agreed readingIn them they recline, calling for abundant fruit and drink - the commentaries note that fruit alone is named, since eating there is for delight and not for need.
38:52#
وَعِندَهُمْ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ أَتْرَابٌ

PickthallAnd with them are those of modest gaze, companions.

Yusuf AliAnd beside them will be chaste women restraining their glances, (companions) of equal age.

The agreed readingAnd with them are those of restrained glance, all of the same age as one another.
38:53#
هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ

PickthallThis it is that ye are promised for the Day of Reckoning.

Yusuf AliSuch is the Promise made, to you for the Day of Account!

The agreed readingThis is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning - promised against that day and kept for it.
38:54#
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَرِزْقُنَا مَا لَهُۥ مِن نَّفَادٍ

PickthallLo! this in truth is Our provision, which will never waste away.

Yusuf AliTruly such will be Our Bounty (to you); it will never fail;-

The agreed readingThis is Our provision to them, and it will never run out or be cut off from them.
38:55#
هَٰذَا وَإِنَّ لِلطَّٰغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَـَٔابٍ

PickthallThis (is for the righteous). And lo! for the transgressors there with be an evil journey's end,

Yusuf AliYea, such! but - for the wrong-doers will be an evil place of (Final) Return!-

The agreed readingSo it is. And for those who overstep all bounds there is an evil place to return to:
38:56#
جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَوْنَهَا فَبِئْسَ ٱلْمِهَادُ

PickthallHell, where they will burn, an evil resting-place.

Yusuf AliHell!- they will burn therein, - an evil bed (indeed, to lie on)!-

The agreed readingHell, which they enter and burn in - and an evil bed it is that is spread for them.
38:57#
هَٰذَا فَلْيَذُوقُوهُ حَمِيمٌ وَغَسَّاقٌ

PickthallHere is a boiling and an ice-cold draught, so let them taste it,

Yusuf AliYea, such! - then shall they taste it,- a boiling fluid, and a fluid dark, murky, intensely cold!-

The agreed readingSo it is - and let them taste it: scalding water, and a freezing foul discharge with it,
38:58#
وَءَاخَرُ مِن شَكْلِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجٌ

PickthallAnd other (torment) of the kind in pairs (the two extremes)!

Yusuf AliAnd other Penalties of a similar kind, to match them!

The agreed readingand other punishments of the very same kind again, coming upon them in sorts and in pairs.
38:59#
هَٰذَا فَوْجٌ مُّقْتَحِمٌ مَّعَكُمْ لَا مَرْحَبًۢا بِهِمْ إِنَّهُمْ صَالُوا۟ ٱلنَّارِ

PickthallHere is an army rushing blindly with you. (Those who are already in the Fire say): No word of welcome for them. Lo! they will roast at the Fire.

Yusuf AliHere is a troop rushing headlong with you! No welcome for them! truly, they shall burn in the Fire!

The agreed readingThis is a crowd pushing in with you - no welcome for them; they will burn in the Fire just as you do.
38:60#
قَالُوا۟ بَلْ أَنتُمْ لَا مَرْحَبًۢا بِكُمْ أَنتُمْ قَدَّمْتُمُوهُ لَنَا فَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرَارُ

PickthallThey say: Nay, but you (misleaders), for you there is no word of welcome. Ye prepared this for us (by your misleading). Now hapless is the plight.

Yusuf Ali(The followers shall cry to the misleaders:) "Nay, ye (too)! No welcome for you! It is ye who have brought this upon us! Now evil is (this) place to stay in!"

The agreed readingThey answer: no, it is you who get no welcome - you set this before us; and an evil place it is to settle.
38:61#
قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا مَن قَدَّمَ لَنَا هَٰذَا فَزِدْهُ عَذَابًا ضِعْفًا فِى ٱلنَّارِ

PickthallThey say: Our Lord! Whoever did prepare this for us, oh, give him double portion of the Fire!

Yusuf AliThey will say: "Our Lord! whoever brought this upon us,- Add to him a double Penalty in the Fire!"

The agreed readingThey say: our Lord, whoever set this before us, give him double the punishment in the Fire.
38:62#
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا لَنَا لَا نَرَىٰ رِجَالًا كُنَّا نَعُدُّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَشْرَارِ

PickthallAnd they say: What aileth us that we behold not men whom we were wont to count among the wicked?

Yusuf AliAnd they will say: "What has happened to us that we see not men whom we used to number among the bad ones?

The agreed readingAnd they say: what is wrong with us, that we do not see men we used to count among the worst?
38:63#
أَتَّخَذْنَٰهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ

PickthallDid we take them (wrongly) for a laughing-stock, or have our eyes missed them?

Yusuf Ali"Did we treat them (as such) in ridicule, or have (our) eyes failed to perceive them?"

The agreed readingDid we take them for a joke and get it wrong, or have our eyes simply missed them here?
38:64#
إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقٌّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ ٱلنَّارِ

PickthallLo! that is very truth: the wrangling of the dwellers in the Fire.

Yusuf AliTruly that is just and fitting,- the mutual recriminations of the People of the Fire!

The agreed readingThat is the truth of it, and no doubt about it: the people of the Fire falling out with one another.
38:65#
قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ مُنذِرٌ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ

PickthallSay (unto them, O Muhammad): I am only a warner, and there is no Allah save Allah, the One, the Absolute,

Yusuf AliSay: "Truly am I a Warner: no god is there but the one Allah, Supreme and Irresistible,-

The agreed readingSay: I am only a warner, and there is no god but God, the One, the Overpowering,
38:66#
رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفَّٰرُ

PickthallLord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Mighty, the Pardoning.

Yusuf Ali"The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- Exalted in Might, able to enforce His Will, forgiving again and again."

The agreed readingLord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Mighty, the Much-Forgiving.
38:67#
قُلْ هُوَ نَبَؤٌا۟ عَظِيمٌ

PickthallSay: It is tremendous tidings

Yusuf AliSay: "That is a Message Supreme (above all),-

The agreed readingSay to them: it is a tremendous announcement, and not the small thing you take it for,
38:68#
أَنتُمْ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضُونَ

PickthallWhence ye turn away!

Yusuf Ali"From which ye do turn away!

The agreed readingand it is from this announcement, of all things, that you are the ones turning away.
38:69#
مَا كَانَ لِىَ مِنْ عِلْمٍۭ بِٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰٓ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ

PickthallI had no knowledge of the Highest Chiefs when they disputed;

Yusuf Ali"No knowledge have I of the Chiefs on high, when they discuss (matters) among themselves.

The agreed readingI had no knowledge of the highest assembly and their dispute - the commentaries place it at the creation of Adam.
38:70#
إِن يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ إِلَّآ أَنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

PickthallIt is revealed unto me only that I may be a plain warner.

Yusuf Ali'Only this has been revealed to me: that I am to give warning plainly and publicly."

The agreed readingIt is revealed to me only that I am a clear warner - my knowledge comes by revelation and no other way.
38:71#
إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن طِينٍ

PickthallWhen thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am about to create a mortal out of mire,

Yusuf AliBehold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man from clay:

The agreed readingWhen your Lord said to the angels: I am about to create a man out of clay - and that man was Adam.
38:72#
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ

PickthallAnd when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down before him prostrate,

Yusuf Ali"When I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit, fall ye down in obeisance unto him."

The agreed readingSo when I have shaped him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration.
38:73#
فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ

PickthallThe angels fell down prostrate, every one,

Yusuf AliSo the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together:

The agreed readingAnd the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together, with not one held back.
38:74#
إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ ٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

PickthallSaving Iblis; he was scornful and became one of the disbelievers.

Yusuf AliNot so Iblis: he was haughty, and became one of those who reject Faith.

The agreed readingexcept Iblis; he was too proud to do it, and he was already one of those who refuse.
38:75#
قَالَ يَٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْعَالِينَ

PickthallHe said: O Iblis! What hindereth thee from falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? Art thou too proud or art thou of the high exalted?

Yusuf Ali(Allah) said: "O Iblis! What prevents thee from prostrating thyself to one whom I have created with my hands? Art thou haughty? Or art thou one of the high (and mighty) ones?"

The agreed readingGod said: Iblis, what kept you from prostrating to what I created with My own hands? Were you too proud, or were you of the exalted?
38:76#
قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ

PickthallHe said: I am better than him. Thou createdst me of fire, whilst him Thou didst create of clay.

Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "I am better than he: thou createdst me from fire, and him thou createdst from clay."

The agreed readingHe said: I am better than him; You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.
38:77#
قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

PickthallHe said: Go forth from hence, for lo! thou art outcast,

Yusuf Ali(Allah) said: "Then get thee out from here: for thou art rejected, accursed.

The agreed readingGod said: then get out of it - you are driven away and cast off from where you were.
38:78#
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

PickthallAnd lo! My curse is on thee till the Day of Judgment.

Yusuf Ali"And My curse shall be on thee till the Day of Judgment."

The agreed readingAnd My curse is on you until the Day of Judgement, the day when deeds are repaid.
38:79#
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

PickthallHe said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised.

Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are raised."

The agreed readingHe said: my Lord, then give me respite until the day when the people are raised up.
38:80#
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ

PickthallHe said: Lo! thou art of those reprieved

Yusuf Ali(Allah) said: "Respite then is granted thee-

The agreed readingGod said: then you are among those given respite, and the respite is granted you,
38:81#
إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ

PickthallUntil the day of the time appointed.

Yusuf Ali"Till the Day of the Time Appointed."

The agreed readinguntil the day of the appointed time - which the commentaries name as the first blast of the Trumpet.
38:82#
قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

PickthallHe said: Then, by Thy might, I surely will beguile them every one,

Yusuf Ali(Iblis) said: "Then, by Thy power, I will put them all in the wrong,-

The agreed readingHe said: then by Your might, I will lead every one of them astray from Your path,
38:83#
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

PickthallSave Thy single-minded slaves among them.

Yusuf Ali"Except Thy Servants amongst them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace)."

The agreed readingexcept those of Your servants among them whom You Yourself have made sincere in faith.
38:84#
قَالَ فَٱلْحَقُّ وَٱلْحَقَّ أَقُولُ

PickthallHe said: The Truth is, and the Truth I speak,

Yusuf Ali(Allah) said: "Then it is just and fitting- and I say what is just and fitting-

The agreed readingGod said: the truth is this, and it is the truth alone that I am speaking here -
38:85#
لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكَ وَمِمَّن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

PickthallThat I shall fill hell with thee and with such of them as follow thee, together.

Yusuf Ali"That I will certainly fill Hell with thee and those that follow thee,- every one."

The agreed readingthat I shall fill Hell with you and with all those of them who follow you, together.
38:86#
قُلْ مَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ

PickthallSay (O Muhammad, unto mankind): I ask of you no fee for this, and I am no simulating.

Yusuf AliSay: "No reward do I ask of you for this (Qur'an), nor am I a pretender.

The agreed readingSay: I ask you no wage at all for this, and I am not one to put on what is not mine.
38:87#
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ

PickthallLo! it is naught else than a reminder for all peoples

Yusuf Ali"This is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds.

The agreed readingIt is nothing but a reminder for all the worlds - for people and for jinn alike.
38:88#
وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ نَبَأَهُۥ بَعْدَ حِينٍۭ

PickthallAnd ye will come in time to know the truth thereof.

Yusuf Ali"And ye shall certainly know the truth of it (all) after a while."

The agreed readingAnd you will come to know the truth of its news for certain after a time has gone by.
