Ad-Dukhan الدخان
The Smoke
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ حمٓ
PickthallHa. Mim.
Yusuf AliHa-Mim.
The agreed readingHa Mim. Two single Arabic letters of the kind that open certain surahs, recited as letters; their certain meaning is left with God.
وَٱلْكِتَٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
PickthallBy the Scripture that maketh plain
Yusuf AliBy the Book that makes things clear;-
The agreed readingAn oath by the Book that makes things clear - clear in showing what is permitted and what is not.
إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَٰرَكَةٍ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ
PickthallLo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning -
Yusuf AliWe sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil).
The agreed readingGod sent it down on a blessed night. He has always been warning His creation through His messengers.
فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ
PickthallWhereon every wise command is made clear
Yusuf AliIn the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom,
The agreed readingOn that night every wise command is made distinct and set out in its place, each matter separated from the rest.
أَمْرًا مِّنْ عِندِنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ
PickthallAs a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending -
Yusuf AliBy command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations),
The agreed readingA command from Us. God has always been the One who sends - sending Muhammad and those before him.
رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
PickthallA mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower,
Yusuf AliAs Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things);
The agreed readingAs a mercy from your Lord to those He sends it to. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ
PickthallLord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure.
Yusuf AliThe Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith.
The agreed readingLord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if only you would be certain of it.
لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
PickthallThere is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers.
Yusuf AliThere is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors.
The agreed readingThere is no god but Him. He gives life and death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.
بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ
PickthallNay, but they play in doubt.
Yusuf AliYet they play about in doubt.
The agreed readingRather, they are in doubt about being raised at all, and they are playing with the matter.
فَٱرْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِى ٱلسَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِينٍ
PickthallBut watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke
Yusuf AliThen watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible,
The agreed readingSo watch, and wait for the Day when the sky brings a smoke plain for all to see,
يَغْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ هَٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
PickthallThat will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment.
Yusuf AliEnveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous.
The agreed readinga smoke that covers the people over entirely. This, they are told, is a painful punishment.
رَّبَّنَا ٱكْشِفْ عَنَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ
Pickthall(Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers.
Yusuf Ali(They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!"
The agreed readingOur Lord, lift the punishment from us - we are believers now, believing your Prophet.
أَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ وَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مُّبِينٌ
PickthallHow can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them,
Yusuf AliHow shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,-
The agreed readingHow can the reminder serve them now, when a messenger making things clear had already come to them
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ مُعَلَّمٌ مَّجْنُونٌ
PickthallAnd they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman?
Yusuf AliYet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!"
The agreed readingand they turned away from him and said: he is taught by someone, he is possessed?
إِنَّا كَاشِفُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُمْ عَآئِدُونَ
PickthallLo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief).
Yusuf AliWe shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways).
The agreed readingGod lifts the punishment a little from them - and they go straight back to what they were.
يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ ٱلْبَطْشَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ
PickthallOn the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish.
Yusuf AliOne day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution!
The agreed readingOn the Day God seizes with the greatest seizing of all, God will take His retribution.
وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ
PickthallAnd verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger,
Yusuf AliWe did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable,
The agreed readingAnd before them God tested the people of Pharaoh, when a noble messenger came to them,
أَنْ أَدُّوٓا۟ إِلَىَّ عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
PickthallSaying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you.
Yusuf AliSaying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust;
The agreed readingsaying: hand over to me the servants of God. I am a trustworthy messenger to you.
وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِنِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ
PickthallAnd saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant.
Yusuf Ali"And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest.
The agreed readingAnd do not set yourselves above God, slighting His revelation and His messenger. I bring you a clear authority.
وَإِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ
PickthallAnd lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death.
Yusuf Ali"For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me.
The agreed readingAnd I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me or do me harm.
وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ لِى فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ
PickthallAnd if ye put no faith in me, then let me go.
Yusuf Ali"If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me."
The agreed readingAnd if you do not believe me and will not trust me, then keep well away from me.
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ
PickthallAnd he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk.
Yusuf Ali(But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin."
The agreed readingSo he called out to his Lord about them, saying: these are a guilty people who will not turn.
فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
PickthallThen (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed,
Yusuf Ali(The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued.
The agreed readingThen the answer came: set out with My servants by night; you will be followed after.
وَٱتْرُكِ ٱلْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ
PickthallAnd leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host.
Yusuf Ali"And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned."
The agreed readingAnd leave the sea as it is, parted and still behind you - they are a host to be drowned in it.
كَمْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِن جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
PickthallHow many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind,
Yusuf AliHow many were the gardens and springs they left behind,
The agreed readingHow many gardens and flowing springs they left behind them when they were taken away,
وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ
PickthallAnd the cornlands and the goodly sites
Yusuf AliAnd corn-fields and noble buildings,
The agreed readingand cornfields, and fine places to sit in, which the commentaries picture as their halls,
وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَٰكِهِينَ
PickthallAnd pleasant things wherein they took delight!
Yusuf AliAnd wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight!
The agreed readingand comforts of every kind in which they had taken their ease and their pleasure.
كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَٰهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ
PickthallEven so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk;
Yusuf AliThus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)!
The agreed readingSo it was; and God gave the whole of it to another people to inherit after them.
فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنظَرِينَ
PickthallAnd the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
Yusuf AliAnd neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again).
The agreed readingAnd neither the sky nor the earth wept for them, and they were given no respite.
وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ
PickthallAnd We delivered the Children of Israel from the shameful doom;
Yusuf AliWe did deliver aforetime the Children of Israel from humiliating Punishment,
The agreed readingAnd God delivered the Children of Israel from the punishment that disgraced them -
مِن فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ
Pickthall(We delivered them) from Pharaoh. Lo! he was a tyrant of the wanton ones.
Yusuf AliInflicted by Pharaoh, for he was arrogant (even) among inordinate transgressors.
The agreed readingfrom Pharaoh himself. He was high-handed, one of those who go beyond all bounds.
وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
PickthallAnd We chose them, purposely, above (all) creatures.
Yusuf AliAnd We chose them aforetime above the nations, knowingly,
The agreed readingAnd God chose them, knowingly and not by chance, above the people of their own time.
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔايَٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَٰٓؤٌا۟ مُّبِينٌ
PickthallAnd We gave them portents wherein was a clear trial.
Yusuf AliAnd granted them Signs in which there was a manifest trial
The agreed readingAnd gave them signs in which there was a clear test of what they would do with them.
إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ
PickthallLo! these, forsooth, are saying:
Yusuf AliAs to these (Quraish), they say forsooth:
The agreed readingAnd these people here before you now are the very ones who are saying the following:
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ
PickthallThere is naught but our first death, and we shall not be raised again.
Yusuf Ali"There is nothing beyond our first death, and we shall not be raised again.
The agreed readingthere is nothing at all but our first death, and we are not going to be raised again;
فَأْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ
PickthallBring back our fathers, if ye speak the truth!
Yusuf Ali"Then bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!"
The agreed readingso bring our fathers back to us now, if you are truthful in what you say to us here.
أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ أَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
PickthallAre they better, or the folk of Tubb'a and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty.
Yusuf AliWhat! Are they better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them? We destroyed them because they were guilty of sin.
The agreed readingAre they better, or the people of Tubba and those before them? God destroyed them - they were guilty.
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَٰعِبِينَ
PickthallAnd We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in play.
Yusuf AliWe created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, merely in (idle) sport:
The agreed readingAnd God did not create the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in play.
مَا خَلَقْنَٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
PickthallWe created them not save with truth; but most of them know not.
Yusuf AliWe created them not except for just ends: but most of them do not understand.
The agreed readingGod created them only with the truth and for a purpose - but most of them do not know it.
إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ مِيقَٰتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
PickthallAssuredly the Day of Decision is the term for all of them,
Yusuf AliVerily the Day of sorting out is the time appointed for all of them,-
The agreed readingThe Day of Decision is the appointed time that is set for the whole of them together,
يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِى مَوْلًى عَن مَّوْلًى شَيْـًٔا وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
PickthallA day when friend can in naught avail friend, nor can they be helped,
Yusuf AliThe Day when no protector can avail his client in aught, and no help can they receive,
The agreed readinga Day when no friend can help a friend in anything, and they will not be helped -
إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
PickthallSave him on whom Allah hath mercy. Lo! He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
Yusuf AliExcept such as receive Allah's Mercy: for He is Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
The agreed readingexcept those on whom God has mercy - and He is the Mighty, the Merciful to them.
إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ ٱلزَّقُّومِ
PickthallLo! the tree of Zaqqum,
Yusuf AliVerily the tree of Zaqqum
The agreed readingThe tree of Zaqqum - the commentaries call it the foulest and bitterest of trees -
طَعَامُ ٱلْأَثِيمِ
PickthallThe food of the sinner!
Yusuf AliWill be the food of the Sinful,-
The agreed readingis the food of the sinful man, and it is set down before him there for him to eat.
كَٱلْمُهْلِ يَغْلِى فِى ٱلْبُطُونِ
PickthallLike molten brass, it seetheth in their bellies
Yusuf AliLike molten brass; it will boil in their insides.
The agreed readinglike molten metal in its darkness, boiling away inside their bellies as they eat,
كَغَلْىِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
PickthallAs the seething of boiling water.
Yusuf AliLike the boiling of scalding water.
The agreed readingboiling in the very way that scalding water boils and seethes upon a hot fire below.
خُذُوهُ فَٱعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
Pickthall(And it will be said): Take him and drag him to the midst of hell,
Yusuf Ali(A voice will cry: "Seize ye him and drag him into the midst of the Blazing Fire!
The agreed readingTake him and drag him roughly along into the very middle of the Blaze itself now,
ثُمَّ صُبُّوا۟ فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِۦ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
PickthallThen pour upon his head the torment of boiling water.
Yusuf Ali"Then pour over his head the Penalty of Boiling Water,
The agreed readingthen pour down over his head the punishment of the scalding water upon him there.
ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ
Pickthall(Saying): Taste! Lo! thou wast forsooth the mighty, the noble!
Yusuf Ali"Taste thou (this)! Truly wast thou mighty, full of honour!
The agreed readingTaste it now - for you were the mighty one, the noble one, or so you used to claim.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَمْتَرُونَ
PickthallLo! this is that whereof ye used to doubt.
Yusuf Ali"Truly this is what ye used to doubt!"
The agreed readingThis is the very thing that you used to be in doubt about and to dispute over before.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى مَقَامٍ أَمِينٍ
PickthallLo! those who kept their duty will be in a place secured.
Yusuf AliAs to the Righteous (they will be) in a position of Security,
The agreed readingThose who guarded themselves are in a place of safety, secure there from all fear,
فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
PickthallAmid gardens and watersprings,
Yusuf AliAmong Gardens and Springs;
The agreed readingamong gardens, and among springs of flowing water that run along beside them there.
يَلْبَسُونَ مِن سُندُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ
PickthallAttired in silk and silk embroidery, facing one another.
Yusuf AliDressed in fine silk and in rich brocade, they will face each other;
The agreed readingdressed in fine silk and in heavy silk, and seated there facing one another in it.
كَذَٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍ
PickthallEven so (it will be). And We shall wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.
Yusuf AliSo; and We shall join them to fair women with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes.
The agreed readingSo it is; and God will pair them with companions of wide and lovely eyes in the Garden.
يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَٰكِهَةٍ ءَامِنِينَ
PickthallThey call therein for every fruit in safety.
Yusuf AliThere can they call for every kind of fruit in peace and security;
The agreed readingThere they call for every kind of fruit that they wish for, and they are in safety.
لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ إِلَّا ٱلْمَوْتَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَوَقَىٰهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
PickthallThey taste not death therein, save the first death. And He hath saved them from the doom of hell,
Yusuf AliNor will they there taste Death, except the first death; and He will preserve them from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire,-
The agreed readingThey do not taste death there beyond the first death; and God has guarded them from the punishment of the Blaze -
فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّكَ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
PickthallA bounty from thy Lord. That is the supreme triumph.
Yusuf AliAs a Bounty from thy Lord! that will be the supreme achievement!
The agreed readinga bounty from your Lord to them. That, and nothing less, is the supreme triumph.
فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ
PickthallAnd We have made (this Scripture) easy in thy language only that they may heed.
Yusuf AliVerily, We have made this (Qur'an) easy, in thy tongue, in order that they may give heed.
The agreed readingGod has made this Qur'an easy upon your tongue, so that they may take heed of it.
فَٱرْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُم مُّرْتَقِبُونَ
PickthallWait then (O Muhammad). Lo! they (too) are waiting.
Yusuf AliSo wait thou and watch; for they (too) are waiting.
The agreed readingSo watch and wait for it; and they too are watching and waiting for their own end.
