The Ornaments of Gold

43:1#
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ حمٓ

PickthallHa. Mim.

Yusuf AliHa-Mim

The agreed readingHa Mim. Two single Arabic letters of the kind that open certain surahs, recited as letters; their certain meaning is left with God.
43:2#
وَٱلْكِتَٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ

PickthallBy the Scripture which maketh plain,

Yusuf AliBy the Book that makes things clear,-

The agreed readingAn oath by the Book that makes things clear - clear in the way it shows the path of guidance and what is needed.
43:3#
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَٰهُ قُرْءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

PickthallLo! We have appointed it a Lecture, in Arabic that haply ye may understand.

Yusuf AliWe have made it a Qur'an in Arabic, that ye may be able to understand (and learn wisdom).

The agreed readingGod has made it an Arabic Qur'an, in the tongue of the Arabs, so that you may understand it.
43:4#
وَإِنَّهُۥ فِىٓ أُمِّ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لَدَيْنَا لَعَلِىٌّ حَكِيمٌ

PickthallAnd Lo! in the Source of Decrees, which We possess, it is indeed sublime, decisive.

Yusuf AliAnd verily, it is in the Mother of the Book, in Our Presence, high (in dignity), full of wisdom.

The agreed readingAnd it is with God, in the Mother of the Book, high in rank and full of wisdom - the source from which the scriptures come.
43:5#
أَفَنَضْرِبُ عَنكُمُ ٱلذِّكْرَ صَفْحًا أَن كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا مُّسْرِفِينَ

PickthallShall We utterly ignore you because ye are a wanton folk?

Yusuf AliShall We then take away the Message from you and repel (you), for that ye are a people transgressing beyond bounds?

The agreed readingShall God withhold the Reminder from you altogether, because you are a people who go to excess?
43:6#
وَكَمْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن نَّبِىٍّ فِى ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

PickthallHow many a prophet did We send among the men of old!

Yusuf AliBut how many were the prophets We sent amongst the peoples of old?

The agreed readingHow many a prophet God sent among the people of old, one after another, before this one.
43:7#
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِىٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

PickthallAnd never came there unto them a prophet but they used to mock him.

Yusuf AliAnd never came there a prophet to them but they mocked him.

The agreed readingand no prophet came to them but they used to mock him - said, the commentaries note, to comfort the Prophet about his own people.
43:8#
فَأَهْلَكْنَآ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

PickthallThen We destroyed men mightier than these in prowess; and the example of the men of old hath gone (before them).

Yusuf AliSo We destroyed (them)- stronger in power than these;- and (thus) has passed on the Parable of the peoples of old.

The agreed readingSo God destroyed people stronger than these in their grip on things; and the example of the men of old has already passed.
43:9#
وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُم مَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

PickthallAnd if thou (Muhammad) ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely answer: The Mighty, the Knower created them;

Yusuf AliIf thou wert to question them, 'Who created the heavens and the earth?' They would be sure to reply, 'they were created by (Him), the Exalted in Power, Full of Knowledge';-

The agreed readingIf you ask them who created the heavens and the earth they will surely say: the Mighty, the Knowing created them -
43:10#
ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ مَهْدًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ فِيهَا سُبُلًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ

PickthallWho made the earth a resting-place for you, and placed roads for you therein, that haply ye may find your way;

Yusuf Ali(Yea, the same that) has made for you the earth (like a carpet) spread out, and has made for you roads (and channels) therein, in order that ye may find guidance (on the way);

The agreed readingthe One who made the earth a resting place for you and set paths in it for you, so that you may find your way.
43:11#
وَٱلَّذِى نَزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۢ بِقَدَرٍ فَأَنشَرْنَا بِهِۦ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا كَذَٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ

PickthallAnd Who sendeth down water from the sky in (due) measure, and We revive a dead land therewith. Even so will ye be brought forth;

Yusuf AliThat sends down (from time to time) rain from the sky in due measure;- and We raise to life therewith a land that is dead; even so will ye be raised (from the dead);-

The agreed readingAnd who sends down water from the sky in measure, and with it God revives a dead land. In the same way you will be brought out.
43:12#
وَٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْأَزْوَٰجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْفُلْكِ وَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ مَا تَرْكَبُونَ

PickthallHe Who created all the pairs, and appointed for you ships and cattle whereupon ye ride.

Yusuf AliThat has created pairs in all things, and has made for you ships and cattle on which ye ride,

The agreed readingAnd who created all the pairs, and made for you the ships and the livestock that you ride,
43:13#
لِتَسْتَوُۥا۟ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِۦ ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ إِذَا ٱسْتَوَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَتَقُولُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقْرِنِينَ

PickthallThat ye may mount upon their backs, and may remember your Lord's favour when ye mount thereon, and may say: Glorified be He Who hath subdued these unto us, and we were not capable (of subduing them);

Yusuf AliIn order that ye may sit firm and square on their backs, and when so seated, ye may celebrate the (kind) favour of your Lord, and say, "Glory to Him Who has subjected these to our (use), for we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves),

The agreed readingso that you may settle on their backs, and then remember your Lord's favour when you are settled on them, and say: glory to Him who has subjected this to us; we could never have brought it under us ourselves,
43:14#
وَإِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

PickthallAnd lo! unto our Lord we surely are returning.

Yusuf Ali"And to our Lord, surely, must we turn back!"

The agreed readingand to our Lord we are surely returning - the words the rider is taught to say along with the praise.
43:15#
وَجَعَلُوا۟ لَهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ جُزْءًا إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَكَفُورٌ مُّبِينٌ

PickthallAnd they allot to Him a portion of His bondmen! Lo! man is verily a mere ingrate.

Yusuf AliYet they attribute to some of His servants a share with Him (in his godhead)! truly is man a blasphemous ingrate avowed!

The agreed readingYet they assign to Him a portion out of His own servants. Man is plainly ungrateful.
43:16#
أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ بَنَاتٍ وَأَصْفَىٰكُم بِٱلْبَنِينَ

PickthallOr chooseth He daughters of all that He hath created, and honoureth He you with sons?

Yusuf AliWhat! has He taken daughters out of what He himself creates, and granted to you sons for choice?

The agreed readingOr has He taken daughters for Himself out of what He creates, and picked out sons for you instead?
43:17#
وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ مَثَلًا ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُۥ مُسْوَدًّا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ

PickthallAnd if one of them hath tidings of that which he likeneth to the Beneficent One, his countenance becometh black and he is full of inward rage.

Yusuf AliWhen news is brought to one of them of (the birth of) what he sets up as a likeness to (Allah) Most Gracious, his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief!

The agreed readingAnd when one of them is given news of what he himself likens to the All-Merciful, his face turns dark and he is filled with grief.
43:18#
أَوَمَن يُنَشَّؤُا۟ فِى ٱلْحِلْيَةِ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلْخِصَامِ غَيْرُ مُبِينٍ

Pickthall(Liken they then to Allah) that which is bred up in outward show, and in dispute cannot make itself plain?

Yusuf AliIs then one brought up among trinkets, and unable to give a clear account in a dispute (to be associated with Allah)?

The agreed readingOne brought up among ornaments, who cannot make himself plain when it comes to argument?
43:19#
وَجَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عِبَٰدُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ إِنَٰثًا أَشَهِدُوا۟ خَلْقَهُمْ سَتُكْتَبُ شَهَٰدَتُهُمْ وَيُسْـَٔلُونَ

PickthallAnd they make the angels, who are the slaves of the Beneficent, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded and they will be questioned.

Yusuf AliAnd they make into females angels who themselves serve Allah. Did they witness their creation? Their evidence will be recorded, and they will be called to account!

The agreed readingAnd they have made the angels, who are servants of the All-Merciful, female. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be written down and they will be questioned.
43:20#
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْ شَآءَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ مَا عَبَدْنَٰهُم مَّا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ

PickthallAnd they say: If the Beneficent One had (so) willed, we should not have worshipped them. They have no knowledge whatsoever of that. They do but guess.

Yusuf Ali("Ah!") they say, "If it had been the will of (Allah) Most Gracious, we should not have worshipped such (deities)!" Of that they have no knowledge! they do nothing but lie!

The agreed readingAnd they say: had the All-Merciful willed, we would not have served them. They have no knowledge of that at all; they are only guessing.
43:21#
أَمْ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ كِتَٰبًا مِّن قَبْلِهِۦ فَهُم بِهِۦ مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ

PickthallOr have We given them any scripture before (this Qur'an) so that they are holding fast thereto?

Yusuf AliWhat! have We given them a Book before this, to which they are holding fast?

The agreed readingOr have We given them a Book before this one, so that they are holding fast to it as their warrant?
43:22#
بَلْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٍ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم مُّهْتَدُونَ

PickthallNay, for they say only: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are guided by their footprints.

Yusuf AliNay! they say: "We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we do guide ourselves by their footsteps."

The agreed readingNo - they say: we found our fathers on a way, and we are guided by their footsteps.
43:23#
وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى قَرْيَةٍ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتْرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٍ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم مُّقْتَدُونَ

PickthallAnd even so We sent not a warner before thee (Muhammad) into any township but its luxurious ones said: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are following their footprints.

Yusuf AliJust in the same way, whenever We sent a Warner before thee to any people, the wealthy ones among them said: "We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we will certainly follow in their footsteps."

The agreed readingAnd so it was: God never sent a warner to a town before you but its comfortable ones said: we found our fathers on a way, and we are following their footsteps.
43:24#
قَٰلَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكُم بِأَهْدَىٰ مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمْ عَلَيْهِ ءَابَآءَكُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرْسِلْتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ

Pickthall(And the warner) said: What! Even though I bring you better guidance than that ye found your fathers following? They answered: Lo! in what ye bring we are disbelievers.

Yusuf AliHe said: "What! Even if I brought you better guidance than that which ye found your fathers following?" They said: "For us, we deny that ye (prophets) are sent (on a mission at all)."

The agreed readingHe said: even if I bring you better guidance than what you found your fathers on? They said: we refuse what you have been sent with.
43:25#
فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

PickthallSo We requited them. Then see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters!

Yusuf AliSo We exacted retribution from them: now see what was the end of those who rejected (Truth)!

The agreed readingSo God took retribution from them. Then look and see what became of those who denied.
43:26#
وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّنِى بَرَآءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ

PickthallAnd when Abraham said unto his father and his folk: Lo! I am innocent of what ye worship

Yusuf AliBehold! Abraham said to his father and his people: "I do indeed clear myself of what ye worship:

The agreed readingAnd when Abraham said to his father and his people: I am free of what you serve,
43:27#
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَنِى فَإِنَّهُۥ سَيَهْدِينِ

PickthallSave Him Who did create me, for He will surely guide me.

Yusuf Ali"(I worship) only Him Who made me, and He will certainly guide me."

The agreed readingexcept the One who created me from nothing - and He will guide me, and go on guiding me.
43:28#
وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةًۢ بَاقِيَةً فِى عَقِبِهِۦ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

PickthallAnd he made it a word enduring among his seed, that haply they might return.

Yusuf AliAnd he left it as a Word to endure among those who came after him, that they may turn back (to Allah).

The agreed readingAnd he made it a word that lasted among those who came after him, so that they might turn back.
43:29#
بَلْ مَتَّعْتُ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَءَابَآءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ وَرَسُولٌ مُّبِينٌ

PickthallNay, but I let these and their fathers enjoy life (only) till there should come unto them the Truth and a messenger making plain.

Yusuf AliYea, I have given the good things of this life to these (men) and their fathers, until the Truth has come to them, and a messenger making things clear.

The agreed readingRather, God let these people and their fathers enjoy life until the truth came to them, and a messenger making things clear.
43:30#
وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ قَالُوا۟ هَٰذَا سِحْرٌ وَإِنَّا بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ

PickthallAnd now that the Truth hath come unto them they say: This is mere magic, and lo! we are disbelievers therein.

Yusuf AliBut when the Truth came to them, they said: "This is sorcery, and we do reject it."

The agreed readingAnd when the truth came to them at last they said: this is magic, and we refuse to believe it.
43:31#
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هَٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنَ ٱلْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيمٍ

PickthallAnd they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?

Yusuf AliAlso, they say: "Why is not this Qur'an sent down to some leading man in either of the two (chief) cities?"

The agreed readingAnd they said: if only this Qur'an had been sent down on some great man of the two towns.
43:32#
أَهُمْ يَقْسِمُونَ رَحْمَتَ رَبِّكَ نَحْنُ قَسَمْنَا بَيْنَهُم مَّعِيشَتَهُمْ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَرَفَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجَٰتٍ لِّيَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُهُم بَعْضًا سُخْرِيًّا وَرَحْمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ

PickthallIs it they who apportion thy Lord's mercy? We have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of the world, and raised some of them above others in rank that some of them may take labour from others; and the mercy of thy Lord is better than (the wealth) that they amass.

Yusuf AliIs it they who would portion out the Mercy of thy Lord? It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in the life of this world: and We raise some of them above others in ranks, so that some may command work from others. But the Mercy of thy Lord is better than the (wealth) which they amass.

The agreed readingIs it they who apportion your Lord's mercy? God has apportioned their livelihood among them in the life of this world, and raised some above others in rank, so that some may take others into service. And your Lord's mercy is better than what they gather.
43:33#
وَلَوْلَآ أَن يَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةً وَٰحِدَةً لَّجَعَلْنَا لِمَن يَكْفُرُ بِٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ لِبُيُوتِهِمْ سُقُفًا مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَيْهَا يَظْهَرُونَ

PickthallAnd were it not that mankind would have become one community, We might well have appointed, for those who disbelieve in the Beneficent, roofs of silver for their houses and stairs (of silver) whereby to mount,

Yusuf AliAnd were it not that (all) men might become of one (evil) way of life, We would provide, for everyone that blasphemes against (Allah) Most Gracious, silver roofs for their houses and (silver) stair-ways on which to go up,

The agreed readingAnd were it not that people would become one community in refusal, God would have given those who refuse the All-Merciful roofs of silver for their houses, and stairways to climb,
43:34#
وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْ أَبْوَٰبًا وَسُرُرًا عَلَيْهَا يَتَّكِـُٔونَ

PickthallAnd for their houses doors (of silver) and couches of silver whereon to recline,

Yusuf AliAnd (silver) doors to their houses, and thrones (of silver) on which they could recline,

The agreed readingand doors for their houses, and couches of silver for them to recline upon at their ease,
43:35#
وَزُخْرُفًا وَإِن كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

PickthallAnd ornaments of gold. Yet all that would have been but a provision of the life of the world. And the Hereafter with your Lord would have been for those who keep from evil.

Yusuf AliAnd also adornments of gold. But all this were nothing but conveniences of the present life: The Hereafter, in the sight of thy Lord is for the Righteous.

The agreed readingand ornaments of gold. All of that is only the enjoyment of the life of this world; and the world to come with your Lord is for those who guard themselves.
43:36#
وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُۥ شَيْطَٰنًا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِينٌ

PickthallAnd he whose sight is dim to the remembrance of the Beneficent, We assign unto him a devil who becometh his comrade;

Yusuf AliIf anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.

The agreed readingAnd whoever turns blind to the remembrance of the All-Merciful, God assigns him a satan who becomes his companion.
43:37#
وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَصُدُّونَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهْتَدُونَ

PickthallAnd lo! they surely turn them from the way of Allah, and yet they deem that they are rightly guided;

Yusuf AliSuch (evil ones) really hinder them from the Path, but they think that they are being guided aright!

The agreed readingAnd those companions turn them from the way, while they reckon themselves to be rightly guided,
43:38#
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَنَا قَالَ يَٰلَيْتَ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرِينُ

PickthallTill, when he cometh unto Us, he saith (unto his comrade): Ah, would that between me and thee there were the distance of the two horizons - an evil comrade!

Yusuf AliAt length, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says (to his evil companion): "Would that between me and thee were the distance of East and West!" Ah! evil is the companion (indeed)!

The agreed readinguntil, when such a one comes to Us, he says to his companion: if only there were between me and you the distance of the two easts - what an evil companion.
43:39#
وَلَن يَنفَعَكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِذ ظَّلَمْتُمْ أَنَّكُمْ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ

PickthallAnd it profiteth you not this day, because ye did wrong, that ye will be sharers in the doom.

Yusuf AliWhen ye have done wrong, it will avail you nothing, that Day, that ye shall be partners in Punishment!

The agreed readingAnd it will not help you this Day, since you did wrong, that you share in the punishment together.
43:40#
أَفَأَنتَ تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ أَوْ تَهْدِى ٱلْعُمْىَ وَمَن كَانَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ

PickthallCanst thou (Muhammad) make the deaf to hear, or canst thou guide the blind or him who is in error manifest?

Yusuf AliCanst thou then make the deaf to hear, or give direction to the blind or to such as (wander) in manifest error?

The agreed readingCan you make the deaf hear, or guide the blind and the one who is in plain error?
43:41#
فَإِمَّا نَذْهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَإِنَّا مِنْهُم مُّنتَقِمُونَ

PickthallAnd if We take thee away, We surely shall take vengeance on them,

Yusuf AliEven if We take thee away, We shall be sure to exact retribution from them,

The agreed readingWhether God takes you away from among them, He will still take retribution from them,
43:42#
أَوْ نُرِيَنَّكَ ٱلَّذِى وَعَدْنَٰهُمْ فَإِنَّا عَلَيْهِم مُّقْتَدِرُونَ

PickthallOr (if) We show thee that wherewith We threaten them; for lo! We have complete command of them.

Yusuf AliOr We shall show thee that (accomplished) which We have promised them: for verily We shall prevail over them.

The agreed readingor shows you in your lifetime what He promised them - He has complete power over them.
43:43#
فَٱسْتَمْسِكْ بِٱلَّذِىٓ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

PickthallSo hold thou fast to that which is inspired in thee. Lo! thou art on a right path.

Yusuf AliSo hold thou fast to the Revelation sent down to thee; verily thou art on a Straight Way.

The agreed readingSo hold fast to what has been revealed to you. You are on a straight path already.
43:44#
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذِكْرٌ لَّكَ وَلِقَوْمِكَ وَسَوْفَ تُسْـَٔلُونَ

PickthallAnd lo! it is in truth a Reminder for thee and for thy folk; and ye will be questioned.

Yusuf AliThe (Qur'an) is indeed the message, for thee and for thy people; and soon shall ye (all) be brought to account.

The agreed readingAnd it is a reminder and an honour for you and for your people, and you will be questioned about it.
43:45#
وَسْـَٔلْ مَنْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَآ أَجَعَلْنَا مِن دُونِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ءَالِهَةً يُعْبَدُونَ

PickthallAnd ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before thee: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped beside the Beneficent?

Yusuf AliAnd question thou our messengers whom We sent before thee; did We appoint any deities other than (Allah) Most Gracious, to be worshipped?

The agreed readingAnd ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: did We ever appoint gods besides the All-Merciful to be served?
43:46#
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَقَالَ إِنِّى رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

PickthallAnd verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.

Yusuf AliWe did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds."

The agreed readingAnd God sent Moses with His signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.
43:47#
فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِذَا هُم مِّنْهَا يَضْحَكُونَ

PickthallBut when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them.

Yusuf AliBut when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them.

The agreed readingBut when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them without pausing to look.
43:48#
وَمَا نُرِيهِم مِّنْ ءَايَةٍ إِلَّا هِىَ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أُخْتِهَا وَأَخَذْنَٰهُم بِٱلْعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

PickthallAnd every token that We showed them was greater than its sister (token), and We grasped them with the torment, that haply they might turn again.

Yusuf AliWe showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us).

The agreed readingAnd not a sign did God show them but it was greater than the one before it; and God seized them with the punishment, so that they might turn back.
43:49#
وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَ ٱلسَّاحِرُ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ إِنَّنَا لَمُهْتَدُونَ

PickthallAnd they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright.

Yusuf AliAnd they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance."

The agreed readingAnd they said: sorcerer, call on your Lord for us by the pact He has made with you - we will surely be guided.
43:50#
فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ إِذَا هُمْ يَنكُثُونَ

PickthallBut when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word.

Yusuf AliBut when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word.

The agreed readingBut when God lifted the punishment from them, at once they broke the word they had given.
43:51#
وَنَادَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ فِى قَوْمِهِۦ قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَلَيْسَ لِى مُلْكُ مِصْرَ وَهَٰذِهِ ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِىٓ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

PickthallAnd Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern?

Yusuf AliAnd Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then?

The agreed readingAnd Pharaoh called out among his people: my people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine, and these rivers running beneath me? Do you not see?
43:52#
أَمْ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِى هُوَ مَهِينٌ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُبِينُ

PickthallI am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain!

Yusuf Ali"Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly?

The agreed readingAm I not better than this man, who is lowly and can barely make himself plain when he speaks?
43:53#
فَلَوْلَآ أُلْقِىَ عَلَيْهِ أَسْوِرَةٌ مِّن ذَهَبٍ أَوْ جَآءَ مَعَهُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ مُقْتَرِنِينَ

PickthallWhy, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him?

Yusuf Ali"Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?"

The agreed readingWhy then have bracelets of gold not been thrown down on him, or angels come with him in company?
43:54#
فَٱسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُۥ فَأَطَاعُوهُ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَٰسِقِينَ

PickthallThus he persuaded his people to make light (of Moses), and they obeyed him. Lo! they were a wanton folk.

Yusuf AliThus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah).

The agreed readingSo he made light of his people and they obeyed him. They were a people who went to excess.
43:55#
فَلَمَّآ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

PickthallSo, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one.

Yusuf AliWhen at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all.

The agreed readingSo when they provoked Us, God took retribution from them and drowned them all together,
43:56#
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْ سَلَفًا وَمَثَلًا لِّلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

PickthallAnd We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them).

Yusuf AliAnd We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages.

The agreed readingand God made them a thing of the past and an example for those who came after them.
43:57#
وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوْمُكَ مِنْهُ يَصِدُّونَ

PickthallAnd when the son of Mary is quoted as an example, behold! the folk laugh out,

Yusuf AliWhen (Jesus) the son of Mary is held up as an example, behold, thy people raise a clamour thereat (in ridicule)!

The agreed readingAnd when the son of Mary is given as an example, at once your people raise an outcry at it,
43:58#
وَقَالُوٓا۟ ءَأَٰلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ أَمْ هُوَ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلًۢا بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُونَ

PickthallAnd say: Are our gods better, or is he? They raise not the objection save for argument. Nay! but they are a contentious folk.

Yusuf AliAnd they say, "Are our gods best, or he?" This they set forth to thee, only by way of disputation: yea, they are a contentious people.

The agreed readingand say: are our gods better, or is he? They put it to you only to argue; they are a contentious people.
43:59#
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبْدٌ أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَجَعَلْنَٰهُ مَثَلًا لِّبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

PickthallHe is nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favour, and We made him a pattern for the Children of Israel.

Yusuf AliHe was no more than a servant: We granted Our favour to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel.

The agreed readingHe was only a servant on whom God bestowed favour, and God made him an example for the Children of Israel.
43:60#
وَلَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَا مِنكُم مَّلَٰٓئِكَةً فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَخْلُفُونَ

PickthallAnd had We willed We could have set among you angels to be viceroys in the earth.

Yusuf AliAnd if it were Our Will, We could make angels from amongst you, succeeding each other on the earth.

The agreed readingAnd had God willed, He could have made angels among you to succeed one another in the earth.
43:61#
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَعِلْمٌ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمْتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَٱتَّبِعُونِ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ

PickthallAnd lo! verily there is knowledge of the Hour. So doubt ye not concerning it, but follow Me. This is the right path.

Yusuf AliAnd (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way.

The agreed readingAnd he is a sign of the Hour, so have no doubt about it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
43:62#
وَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ

PickthallAnd let not Satan turn you aside. Lo! he is an open enemy for you.

Yusuf AliLet not the Evil One hinder you: for he is to you an enemy avowed.

The agreed readingAnd do not let Satan turn you away from that path; he is a plain and declared enemy to you.
43:63#
وَلَمَّا جَآءَ عِيسَىٰ بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ قَالَ قَدْ جِئْتُكُم بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ وَلِأُبَيِّنَ لَكُم بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى تَخْتَلِفُونَ فِيهِ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

PickthallWhen Jesus came with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), he said: I have come unto you with wisdom, and to make plain some of that concerning which ye differ. So keep your duty to Allah, and obey me.

Yusuf AliWhen Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me.

The agreed readingAnd when Jesus came with the clear proofs he said: I have come to you with wisdom, and to make clear to you some of what you differ over. So be mindful of God, and obey me.
43:64#
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ رَبِّى وَرَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُوهُ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ

PickthallLo! Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him. This is a right path.

Yusuf Ali"For Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord: so worship ye Him: this is a Straight Way."

The agreed readingGod is my Lord and your Lord alike, so serve Him. This is a straight path to walk.
43:65#
فَٱخْتَلَفَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ مِنۢ بَيْنِهِمْ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمٍ أَلِيمٍ

PickthallBut the factions among them differed. Then woe unto those who do wrong from the doom of a painful day.

Yusuf AliBut sects from among themselves fell into disagreement: then woe to the wrong-doers, from the Penalty of a Grievous Day!

The agreed readingBut the factions among them differed - over Jesus: whether he was God, or the son of God, or the third of three. So woe to those who did wrong in what they said of him, from the punishment of a painful Day.
43:66#
هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

PickthallAwait they aught save the Hour, that it shall come upon them suddenly, when they know not?

Yusuf AliDo they only wait for the Hour - that it should come on them all of a sudden, while they perceive not?

The agreed readingAre they waiting for anything but the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly while they do not notice?
43:67#
ٱلْأَخِلَّآءُ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

PickthallFriends on that day will be foes one to another, save those who kept their duty (to Allah).

Yusuf AliFriends on that day will be foes, one to another,- except the Righteous.

The agreed readingClose friends that Day will be enemies to one another - except those who guarded themselves.
43:68#
يَٰعِبَادِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ وَلَآ أَنتُمْ تَحْزَنُونَ

PickthallO My slaves! For you there is no fear this day, nor is it ye who grieve;

Yusuf AliMy devotees! no fear shall be on you that Day, nor shall ye grieve,-

The agreed readingMy servants, no fear is upon you this Day, and it is not you who will be made to grieve -
43:69#
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ

Pickthall(Ye) who believed Our revelations and were self-surrendered,

Yusuf Ali(Being) those who have believed in Our Signs and bowed (their wills to Ours) in Islam.

The agreed readingthose of you who believed in Our signs and who had submitted themselves wholly to God.
43:70#
ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ أَنتُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ تُحْبَرُونَ

PickthallEnter the Garden, ye and your wives, to be made glad.

Yusuf AliEnter ye the Garden, ye and your wives, in (beauty and) rejoicing.

The agreed readingEnter the Garden, you and your spouses along with you, and be made glad in it together.
43:71#
يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِصِحَافٍ مِّن ذَهَبٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ وَفِيهَا مَا تَشْتَهِيهِ ٱلْأَنفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ ٱلْأَعْيُنُ وَأَنتُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

PickthallTherein are brought round for them trays of gold and goblets, and therein is all that souls desire and eyes find sweet. And ye are immortal therein.

Yusuf AliTo them will be passed round, dishes and goblets of gold: there will be there all that the souls could desire, all that their eyes could delight in: and ye shall abide therein (for eye).

The agreed readingTrays of gold and cups are passed round among them, and in it is whatever the souls desire and the eyes find sweet; and you will stay there.
43:72#
وَتِلْكَ ٱلْجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِىٓ أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

PickthallThis is the Garden which ye are made to inherit because of what ye used to do.

Yusuf AliSuch will be the Garden of which ye are made heirs for your (good) deeds (in life).

The agreed readingThat is the Garden you have been made to inherit, for what you used to do in the world.
43:73#
لَكُمْ فِيهَا فَٰكِهَةٌ كَثِيرَةٌ مِّنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ

PickthallTherein for you is fruit in plenty whence to eat.

Yusuf AliYe shall have therein abundance of fruit, from which ye shall have satisfaction.

The agreed readingIn it you have fruit in plenty, and from it you eat whatever you wish to eat of it.
43:74#
إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدُونَ

PickthallLo! the guilty are immortal in hell's torment.

Yusuf AliThe sinners will be in the Punishment of Hell, to dwell therein (for aye):

The agreed readingThe guilty stay on in the punishment of Hell, and it does not end for them at all.
43:75#
لَا يُفَتَّرُ عَنْهُمْ وَهُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ

PickthallIt is not relaxed for them, and they despair therein.

Yusuf AliNowise will the (Punishment) be lightened for them, and in despair will they be there overwhelmed.

The agreed readingIt is not lightened for them at any point, and in it they fall silent in despair.
43:76#
وَمَا ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

PickthallWe wronged them not, but they it was who did the wrong.

Yusuf AliNowise shall We be unjust to them: but it is they who have been unjust themselves.

The agreed readingGod did not wrong them in any part of it; it was they themselves who were the wrongdoers.
43:77#
وَنَادَوْا۟ يَٰمَٰلِكُ لِيَقْضِ عَلَيْنَا رَبُّكَ قَالَ إِنَّكُم مَّٰكِثُونَ

PickthallAnd they cry: O master! Let thy Lord make an end of us. He saith: Lo! here ye must remain.

Yusuf AliThey will cry: "O Malik! would that thy Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Nay, but ye shall abide!"

The agreed readingAnd they call out: Malik, let your Lord finish us off. He says: you are staying.
43:78#
لَقَدْ جِئْنَٰكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَكُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَٰرِهُونَ

PickthallWe verily brought the Truth unto you, but ye were, most of you, averse to the Truth.

Yusuf AliVerily We have brought the Truth to you: but most of you have a hatred for Truth.

The agreed readingGod brought you the truth, but most of you were set against the truth when it came.
43:79#
أَمْ أَبْرَمُوٓا۟ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّا مُبْرِمُونَ

PickthallOr do they determine any thing (against the Prophet)? Lo! We (also) are determining.

Yusuf AliWhat! have they settled some plan (among themselves)? But it is We Who settle things.

The agreed readingOr have they settled on some scheme against him? Then God too is settling His own.
43:80#
أَمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّا لَا نَسْمَعُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَىٰهُم بَلَىٰ وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَيْهِمْ يَكْتُبُونَ

PickthallOr deem they that We cannot hear their secret thoughts and private confidences? Nay, but Our envoys, present with them, do record.

Yusuf AliOr do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsels? Indeed (We do), and Our messengers are by them, to record.

The agreed readingOr do they reckon that God does not hear their secrets and their private talk? He does, and Our messengers are with them writing it down.
43:81#
قُلْ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ وَلَدٌ فَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلْعَٰبِدِينَ

PickthallSay (O Muhammad): If the Beneficent One hath a son, then, I shall be first among the worshippers. (But there is no son).

Yusuf AliSay: "If (Allah) Most Gracious had a son, I would be the first to worship."

The agreed readingSay: if the All-Merciful had a son, I would be the first to serve him. But He has none.
43:82#
سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

PickthallGlorified be the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, from that which they ascribe (unto Him)!

Yusuf AliGlory to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne (of Authority)! (He is free) from the things they attribute (to him)!

The agreed readingGlory be to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, far above what they describe.
43:83#
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ

PickthallSo let them flounder (in their talk) and play until they meet the Day which they are promised.

Yusuf AliSo leave them to babble and play (with vanities) until they meet that Day of theirs, which they have been promised.

The agreed readingSo leave them to plunge and play until they meet the Day that they are promised.
43:84#
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِلَٰهٌ وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَٰهٌ وَهُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

PickthallAnd He it is Who in the heaven is Allah, and in the earth Allah. He is the Wise, the Knower.

Yusuf AliIt is He Who is Allah in heaven and Allah on earth; and He is full of Wisdom and Knowledge.

The agreed readingAnd He is the One who is God in the heaven and God in the earth; and He is the Wise, the Knowing.
43:85#
وَتَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

PickthallAnd blessed be He unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and with Whom is knowledge of the Hour, and unto Whom ye will be returned.

Yusuf AliAnd blessed is He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all between them: with Him is the Knowledge of the Hour (of Judgment): and to Him shall ye be brought back.

The agreed readingAnd blessed be the One to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; with Him is the knowledge of the Hour, and to Him you will be returned.
43:86#
وَلَا يَمْلِكُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلشَّفَٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَن شَهِدَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

PickthallAnd those unto whom they cry instead of Him possess no power of intercession, saving him who beareth witness unto the Truth knowingly.

Yusuf AliAnd those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession;- only he who bears witness to the Truth, and they know (him).

The agreed readingAnd those they call on besides Him hold no power of intercession - except one who bears witness to the truth, and they know it.
43:87#
وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُم مَّنْ خَلَقَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُ فَأَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

PickthallAnd if thou ask them who created them, they will surely say: Allah. How then are they turned away?

Yusuf AliIf thou ask them, who created them, they will certainly say, Allah: How then are they deluded away (from the Truth)?

The agreed readingAnd if you ask them who created them, they will surely say: God. How then are they turned away?
43:88#
وَقِيلِهِۦ يَٰرَبِّ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ

PickthallAnd he saith: O my Lord! Lo! these are a folk who believe not.

Yusuf Ali(Allah has knowledge) of the (Prophet's) cry, "O my Lord! Truly these are people who will not believe!"

The agreed readingAnd there is his saying to God: my Lord, these are a people who will not believe.
43:89#
فَٱصْفَحْ عَنْهُمْ وَقُلْ سَلَٰمٌ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

PickthallThen bear with them (O Muhammad) and say: Peace. But they will come to know.

Yusuf AliBut turn away from them, and say "Peace!" But soon shall they know!

The agreed readingSo turn away from them and say: peace. And in time they will come to know the truth.
