Surah 64 of 114 · Madani · 18 ayat

At-Taghabun

The Mutual Disillusion

64:1#

PickthallAll that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah; unto Him belongeth Sovereignty and unto Him belongeth praise, and He is Able to do all things.

Yusuf AliWhatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare the Praises and Glory of Allah: to Him belongs dominion, and to Him belongs praise: and He has power over all things.

The agreed readingEverything in the heavens and the earth declares God free of every imperfection, the word again taking in the whole of creation and not only those able to speak. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs the praise, and He has power over everything.
64:2#

PickthallHe it is Who created you, but one of you is a disbeliever and one of you is a believer, and Allah is Seer of what ye do.

Yusuf AliIt is He Who has created you; and of you are some that are Unbelievers, and some that are Believers: and Allah sees well all that ye do.

The agreed readingHe is the One who created you, and then some of you refuse and some believe. The commentaries take note of the order in the wording: the creating comes first and the parting into two comes after it, so what divides people is not the way they were made. And God sees what you do.
64:3#

PickthallHe created the heavens and the earth with truth, and He shaped you and made good your shapes, and unto Him is the journeying.

Yusuf AliHe has created the heavens and the earth in just proportions, and has given you shape, and made your shapes beautiful: and to Him is the final Goal.

The agreed readingHe created the heavens and the earth in truth — which the commentaries read against its opposite, a creation made in play or with no settled purpose. He shaped you and made your shapes good, the human form being made the best of forms; the shaping belongs to Him alone, which is why the Shaper is one of His names. And to Him is the journey's end.
64:4#

PickthallHe knoweth all that is in the heavens and the earth, and He knoweth what ye conceal and what ye publish. And Allah is Aware of what is in the breasts (of men).

Yusuf AliHe knows what is in the heavens and on earth; and He knows what ye conceal and what ye reveal: yea, Allah knows well the (secrets) of (all) hearts.

The agreed readingHe knows what is in the heavens and the earth, and He knows what you keep secret and what you make open. And He knows what is in the breast — the things held there and the beliefs. Nothing you conceal can be hidden from the One who already knows what never leaves the heart.
64:5#

PickthallHath not the story reached you of those who disbelieved of old and so did taste the ill-effects of their conduct, and theirs will be a painful doom.

Yusuf AliHas not the story reached you, of those who rejected Faith aforetime? So they tasted the evil result of their conduct; and they had a grievous Penalty.

The agreed readingHas the account not reached you of those who refused before you, and tasted the heaviness of their own conduct? The commentaries take that tasting to be the punishment that fell on them in this world, and the painful punishment named after it to be the one still to come.
64:6#

PickthallThat was because their messengers (from Allah) kept coming unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they said: Shall mere mortals guide us? So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah was independent (of them). Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.

Yusuf AliThat was because there came to them messengers with Clear Signs, but they said: "Shall (mere) human beings direct us?" So they rejected (the Message) and turned away. But Allah can do without (them): and Allah is free of all needs, worthy of all praise.

The agreed readingThat happened because their messengers kept coming to them with clear proofs, and they said: are mere men to guide us? So they refused and turned away, and God had no need of them. The objection was never to the proofs but to the messenger being a human being like themselves. God is the Self-sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
64:7#

PickthallThose who disbelieve assert that they will not be raised again. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Yea, verily, by my Lord! ye will be raised again and then ye will be informed of what ye did; and that is easy for Allah.

Yusuf AliThe Unbelievers think that they will not be raised up (for Judgment). Say: "Yea, By my Lord, Ye shall surely be raised up: then shall ye be told (the truth) of all that ye did. And that is easy for Allah."

The agreed readingThose who refuse claim they will never be raised. Say: yes, by my Lord, you will be raised, and then you will be told what you did. The commentaries note what the denial is aimed at: with no raising there is nothing left standing of a religion built on command, prohibition and reckoning. And that is easy for God.
64:8#

PickthallSo believe in Allah and His messenger and the light which We have revealed. And Allah is Informed of what ye do.

Yusuf AliBelieve, therefore, in Allah and His Messenger, and in the Light which we have sent down. And Allah is well acquainted with all that ye do.

The agreed readingSo believe in God and His messenger, and in the light We have sent down. The commentaries of both traditions are together on what the light is: the Qur'an. It is called light because it shines of itself and shows the road by that shining. And God is aware of what you do.
64:9#

PickthallThe day when He shall gather you unto the Day of Assembling, that will be a day of mutual disillusion. And whoso believeth in Allah and doeth right, He will remit from him his evil deeds and will bring him unto Gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to abide for ever. That is the supreme triumph.

Yusuf AliThe Day that He assembles you (all) for a Day of Assembly,- that will be a Day of mutual loss and gain (among you), and those who believe in Allah and work righteousness,- He will remove from them their ills, and He will admit them to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, to dwell therein for ever: that will be the Supreme Achievement.

The agreed readingThe day He gathers you for the Day of Gathering is the day of mutual loss and gain, and the sūrah takes its name from it. The commentaries explain the name as a reckoning settled at last, in which those who believed take what those who refused would have had. Whoever believes in God and does right has his bad deeds struck off him and is admitted to Gardens with rivers running beneath them, to stay there for ever. That is the supreme triumph.
64:10#

PickthallBut those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, such are owners of the Fire; they will abide therein - a hapless journey's end!

Yusuf AliBut those who reject Faith and treat Our Signs as falsehoods, they will be Companions of the Fire, to dwell therein for aye: and evil is that Goal.

The agreed readingAnd those who refused and called Our signs a lie — the signs here being the Qur'an — are the companions of the Fire, to stay in it. A wretched journey's end it is.
64:11#

PickthallNo calamity befalleth save by Allah's leave. And whosoever believeth in Allah, He guideth his heart. And Allah is Knower of all things.

Yusuf AliNo kind of calamity can occur, except by the leave of Allah: and if any one believes in Allah, (Allah) guides his heart (aright): for Allah knows all things.

The agreed readingNo affliction falls except by God's leave. And whoever believes in God — believes, that is, that what struck him came by God's decree — has his heart guided: guided to patience under it, and settled, so that a heart which had been wavering holds still once it is fixed on faith. God knows everything.
64:12#

PickthallObey Allah and obey His messenger; but if ye turn away, then the duty of Our messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.

Yusuf AliSo obey Allah, and obey His Messenger: but if ye turn back, the duty of Our Messenger is but to proclaim (the Message) clearly and openly.

The agreed readingObey God and obey the messenger. If you turn away, none of that falls on him: what is laid on the messenger is only to convey the message plainly, and the commentaries add that he has conveyed it.
64:13#

PickthallAllah! There is no Allah save Him. In Allah, therefore, let believers put their trust.

Yusuf AliAllah! There is no god but He: and on Allah, therefore, let the Believers put their trust.

The agreed readingGod — there is no god but He. And on God let the believers rely. The statement and the command stand side by side, so that the reliance just asked for is pointed at the only one there is to rely on.
64:14#

PickthallO ye who believe! Lo! among your wives and your children there are enemies for you, therefor beware of them. And if ye efface and overlook and forgive, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Yusuf AliO ye who believe! Truly, among your wives and your children are (some that are) enemies to yourselves: so beware of them! But if ye forgive and overlook, and cover up (their faults), verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The agreed readingAmong your wives and your children there are enemies to you — the enmity meant being that they hold a man back from obeying God, which the commentaries connect to men kept from leaving by their own families. So beware of them, in the sense of not obeying them in it. And if you pardon, and overlook, and cover it over, God is Forgiving and Merciful.
64:15#

PickthallYour wealth and your children are only a temptation, whereas Allah! with Him is an immense reward.

Yusuf AliYour riches and your children may be but a trial: but in the Presence of Allah, is the highest, Reward.

The agreed readingYour wealth and your children are a trial — the word carrying here its sense of a test, and what is tested is whether they will take a man away from what comes after. They are not called an evil; they are called a test. And with God is a great reward, which is the thing lost by being taken up with them.
64:16#

PickthallSo keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful.

Yusuf AliSo fear Allah as much as ye can; listen and obey and spend in charity for the benefit of your own soul and those saved from the covetousness of their own souls,- they are the ones that achieve prosperity.

The agreed readingSo be mindful of God as much as you can. The commentaries set this beside the earlier command to be mindful of Him as He should be, which the Companions had found beyond their strength: this āyah measures the duty by what a man is able for. And listen — a listening that accepts — and obey, and spend; that is better for yourselves. Whoever is guarded from his own grasping nature, those are the ones who succeed.
64:17#

PickthallIf ye lend unto Allah a goodly loan, He will double it for you and will forgive you, for Allah is Responsive, Clement,

Yusuf AliIf ye loan to Allah, a beautiful loan, He will double it to your (credit), and He will grant you Forgiveness: for Allah is most Ready to appreciate (service), Most Forbearing,-

The agreed readingIf you lend God a goodly loan He will multiply it for you and forgive you. The commentaries of both traditions agree on what makes the loan goodly — that it is given from a willing heart — and on the multiplying: ten for one, and up to seven hundred and beyond. God is Appreciative and Forbearing.
64:18#

PickthallKnower of the Invisible and the Visible, the Mighty, the Wise.

Yusuf AliKnower of what is open, Exalted in Might, Full of Wisdom.

The agreed readingKnower of the unseen and the seen — of what is kept secret and of what is open — the Mighty in His dominion, the Wise in His making. After everything the sūrah has asked of the reader, it closes on the one who is asking.
