Al-Inshiqaq الإنشقاق
The Sundering
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ
PickthallWhen the heaven is split asunder
Yusuf AliWhen the sky is rent asunder,
The agreed readingWhen the sky is split open — torn apart, the commentaries gloss, at the coming of that Day.
Urduجب آسمان پھٹ جائے گا اور اس کی ہیئت بدل جائے گی اور نظام درہم برہم ہو جائے گا۔
Arabicإذا السماءُ انشقَّتْ وتصدَّعَتْ فتغيَّرَتْ هيئتُها واختلَّ نظامُها.
وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ
PickthallAnd attentive to her Lord in fear,
Yusuf AliAnd hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord, and it must needs (do so);-
The agreed readingand gives ear to its Lord, as is its due — hearing and obeying in the splitting, the commentaries gloss, as it is right that it should.
Urduاور وہ اپنے رب کا حکم کان لگا کر سنے گا اور اس کی تعمیل کرے گا، اور اسے یہی زیب دیتا ہے؛ اپنے بارے میں اسے کوئی اختیار حاصل نہیں۔
Arabicوأصغَتْ لأمرِ ربِّها وانقادَتْ له، وحُقَّ لها أن تسمعَ وتُطيعَ؛ فليس لها من أمرِ نفسِها شيءٌ.
وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ
PickthallAnd when the earth is spread out
Yusuf AliAnd when the earth is flattened out,
The agreed readingand when the earth is stretched out — widened out, the commentaries gloss, until no building and no mountain is left on it.
Urduاور جب زمین کھینچ کر پھیلا دی جائے گی اور اس کی وسعت بڑھا دی جائے گی، یہاں تک کہ اس پر نہ کوئی پہاڑ رہے گا نہ کوئی عمارت۔
Arabicوإذا الأرضُ مُدَّتْ وبُسِطَتْ وزِيدَ في سَعَتِها، فلم يَبقَ عليها جبلٌ ولا بناءٌ.
وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ
PickthallAnd hath cast out all that was in her, and is empty
Yusuf AliAnd casts forth what is within it and becomes (clean) empty,
The agreed readingand casts out what is in it and empties itself — throwing up its dead and what it held, the commentaries gloss, until nothing is left inside.
Urduاور وہ اپنے اندر کا سب کچھ باہر ڈال دے گی اور خالی ہو جائے گی — نہ مُردے باقی رہیں گے نہ خزانے۔
Arabicوألقَتْ ما في جوفِها وتخلَّتْ عنه، فأخرجَتْ ما فيها حتى لم يَبقَ في باطنِها شيءٌ.
وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ
PickthallAnd attentive to her Lord in fear!
Yusuf AliAnd hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord,- and it must needs (do so);- (then will come Home the full reality).
The agreed readingand gives ear to its Lord, as is its due. The commentaries agree the two — sky and earth — obey without resistance, and that the emptying is of the dead and of what the earth held.
Urduاور وہ بھی اپنے رب کا حکم سنے گی اور اس کی تعمیل کرے گی، اور اسے یہی زیب دیتا ہے۔ جب آسمان اور زمین اس طرح فرماں بردار ہیں تو انسان کو تو اپنے خالق کے حکم کے آگے اور بھی زیادہ جھکنا چاہیے۔
Arabicوأصغَتْ لأمرِ ربِّها وانقادَتْ له، وحُقَّ لها ذلك. فإذا كانتِ السماءُ والأرضُ على هذا الانقيادِ، فالإنسانُ أولى بأن ينقادَ لأمرِ خالقِه.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ
PickthallThou, verily, O man, art working toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence).
Yusuf AliO thou man! Verily thou art ever toiling on towards thy Lord- painfully toiling,- but thou shalt meet Him.
The agreed readingO man, you are labouring towards your Lord, hard labour, and you will meet Him. The commentaries agree the labouring runs the whole of a life, and that what is met is what was done in it.
Urduاے انسان! تو اپنے رب کی طرف مسلسل محنت اور مشقت کرتا ہوا بڑھ رہا ہے — بھلائی کی ہو یا برائی کی — پھر تجھے اسی کا سامنا کرنا ہے اور اپنے رب سے ملنا ہے، جو تجھے اس کا بدلہ دے گا۔
Arabicيا أيُّها الإنسانُ، إنَّك ساعٍ إلى ربِّك سعيًا وكادِحٌ في عملِك كدحًا، خيرًا كان أو شرًّا، ثم أنت ملاقٍ ذلك وملاقٍ ربَّك فيُجازيك به.
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ
PickthallThen whoso is given his account in his right hand
Yusuf AliThen he who is given his Record in his right hand,
The agreed readingThen as for the one given his record in his right hand — the believer, the commentaries agree, and the hand it is given in is the sign of it.
Urduپھر جسے اس کا نامۂ اعمال اس کے دائیں ہاتھ میں دیا جائے گا،
Arabicفأمَّا مَن أُعطِيَ صحيفةَ عملِه بيمينِه.
فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا
PickthallHe truly will receive an easy reckoning
Yusuf AliSoon will his account be taken by an easy reckoning,
The agreed readinghe will be reckoned with an easy reckoning — his deeds shown to him, the commentaries agree, without being pressed on them.
Urduتو اس سے بہت آسان حساب لیا جائے گا؛ یعنی اس کا عمل بس اس کے سامنے پیش کر دیا جائے گا، کوئی جرح اور پکڑ نہ ہوگی۔
Arabicفسوف يُحاسَبُ حسابًا يسيرًا سهلًا، وهو عَرْضُ عملِه عليه من غيرِ مُناقشةٍ ولا استقصاءٍ.
وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا
PickthallAnd will return unto his folk in joy.
Yusuf AliAnd he will turn to his people, rejoicing!
The agreed readingand go back to his people rejoicing. The commentaries agree the easy reckoning is the deeds shown to him without being pressed, and that being pressed is itself the ruin.
Urduاور وہ اپنے گھر والوں کی طرف خوش خوش لوٹے گا، اس رحمت پر شاداں جو اسے اپنے رب سے ملی۔
Arabicوينقلبُ إلى أهلِه مسرورًا فرِحًا بما نالَه من رحمةِ ربِّه.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦ
PickthallBut whoso is given his account behind his back,
Yusuf AliBut he who is given his Record behind his back,-
The agreed readingBut as for the one given his record from behind his back — his right hand bound to his neck, the commentaries gloss, and the left brought round behind him.
Urduاور جسے اس کا نامۂ اعمال اس کی پیٹھ کے پیچھے سے دیا جائے گا،
Arabicوأمَّا مَن أُعطِيَ كتابَه من وراءِ ظهرِه.
فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًا
PickthallHe surely will invoke destruction
Yusuf AliSoon will he cry for perdition,
The agreed readinghe will call out for destruction — calling down his own ruin, the commentaries gloss, at what he sees in it.
Urduتو وہ اپنی ہلاکت کو پکارے گا جب اس میں لکھا ہوا دیکھے گا، اور چیخ اٹھے گا: ہائے میری بربادی!
Arabicفسوف يدعو على نفسِه بالهلاكِ حين يرى ما فيه، فيقول: وا ثُبوراه.
وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا
PickthallAnd be thrown to scorching fire.
Yusuf AliAnd he will enter a Blazing Fire.
The agreed readingand enter a blaze. The commentaries agree the calling out is on seeing what is in the record.
Urduاور وہ بھڑکتی ہوئی آگ میں داخل ہو گا اور اس کی تپش جھیلے گا۔
Arabicويدخلُ النارَ الشديدةَ الاتِّقادِ فيُقاسي حرَّها.
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا
PickthallHe verily lived joyous with his folk,
Yusuf AliTruly, did he go about among his people, rejoicing!
The agreed readingHe had been among his people, rejoicing — pleased with himself, the commentaries gloss, in following what he wanted.
Urduبےشک وہ دنیا میں اپنے گھر والوں کے درمیان بہت خوش اور مگن تھا، اپنی خواہشوں کے پیچھے چلتا اور انجام سے غافل رہتا تھا۔
Arabicإنَّه كان في الدنيا بينَ أهلِه مسرورًا بَطِرًا، متَّبِعًا لهواه غافلًا عن العاقبةِ.
إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ
PickthallHe verily deemed that he would never return (unto Allah).
Yusuf AliTruly, did he think that he would not have to return (to Us)!
The agreed readingHe thought he would never return. The commentaries agree the returning meant is the going back to God for the reckoning, and that the pleasure he took was what made him forget it.
Urduاس نے سمجھ رکھا تھا کہ اسے مرنے کے بعد اپنے رب کی طرف لوٹنا ہی نہیں؛ اسی گمان سے وہ بےفکری اور غفلت پیدا ہوئی تھی۔
Arabicإنَّه ظنَّ أن لن يرجعَ إلى ربِّه بعدَ موتِه، فمن هنا جاءه ذلك السرورُ والغفلةُ.
بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًا
PickthallNay, but lo! his Lord is ever looking on him!
Yusuf AliNay, nay! for his Lord was (ever) watchful of him!
The agreed readingYes indeed — his Lord was ever seeing him. The commentaries read it as the direct answer: he does return, and he was never out of sight.
Urduکیوں نہیں! وہ ضرور لوٹے گا۔ اس کا رب تو اسے دیکھ رہا تھا اور اس کے حال اور عمل سے پوری طرح باخبر تھا؛ کوئی بات اس سے چھپی نہ تھی۔
Arabicبلى، ليَرجِعَنَّ إليه. إنَّ ربَّه كان به بصيرًا عليمًا بحالِه وعملِه، لا يخفى عليه منه شيءٌ.
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ
PickthallOh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset,
Yusuf AliSo I do call to witness the ruddy glow of Sunset;
The agreed readingSo I swear by the afterglow — the redness left in the sky, the commentaries gloss, after the sun has gone.
Urduقسم ہے شفق کی، یعنی اس سرخی کی جو غروبِ آفتاب کے بعد آسمان کے کنارے پر رہ جاتی ہے،
Arabicقسمٌ بالشفقِ، وهو الحُمرةُ التي تبقى في الأُفُقِ بعدَ غروبِ الشمسِ.
وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ
PickthallAnd by the night and all that it enshroudeth,
Yusuf AliThe Night and its Homing;
The agreed readingand the night and what it gathers in — drawing in, the commentaries gloss, everything that scattered abroad in the day.
Urduاور رات کی اور جو کچھ وہ اپنے دامن میں سمیٹ لیتی ہے — ہر وہ چیز جو اندھیرا ہوتے ہی اپنے ٹھکانے کو لوٹ آتی ہے۔
Arabicوالليلِ وما جمعَ وضمَّ إليه مما يأوي إليه ويستكِنُّ فيه.
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ
PickthallAnd by the moon when she is at the full,
Yusuf AliAnd the Moon in her fullness:
The agreed readingand the moon when it comes full. The commentaries gloss the afterglow as the redness left after sunset, and the gathering as everything that scattered by day coming back in at night.
Urduاور چاند کی جب اس کی روشنی مکمل ہو جائے اور وہ پورا ہو کر بدر بن جائے۔
Arabicوالقمرِ إذا اجتمعَ نورُه وتمَّ فصار بدرًا.
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ
PickthallThat ye shall journey on from plane to plane.
Yusuf AliYe shall surely travel from stage to stage.
The agreed readingthat you will mount stage upon stage. The commentaries agree the stages are conditions a man passes through, one after another.
Urduتم لازماً ایک حالت کے بعد دوسری حالت پر چڑھتے چلے جاؤ گے، ایک منزل سے دوسری منزل کی طرف۔ تمہارا معاملہ کسی ایک حال پر ٹھہرنے والا نہیں۔
Arabicلتَركَبُنَّ حالًا بعدَ حالٍ وطَورًا بعدَ طَورٍ، تنتقلون من واحدةٍ إلى أخرى. فليس أمرُكم على حالٍ واحدةٍ تدومُ.
فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
PickthallWhat aileth them, then, that they believe not
Yusuf AliWhat then is the matter with them, that they believe not?-
The agreed readingSo what is it with them, that they do not believe — what is stopping them, the commentaries gloss, with the proof standing in front of them.
Urduتو انہیں کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ اتنی واضح دلیلوں کے بعد بھی ایمان نہیں لاتے؟ ایمان نہ لانے کے لیے آخر ان کے پاس کیا عذر ہے؟
Arabicفما لهم لا يؤمنون بعدَ وضوحِ البراهينِ؟ وأيُّ حُجَّةٍ لهم في تركِ الإيمانِ؟
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ
PickthallAnd, when the Qur'an is recited unto them, worship not (Allah)?
Yusuf AliAnd when the Qur'an is read to them, they fall not prostrate,
The agreed readingand when the Qur'ān is recited to them do not bow down? The commentaries agree the bowing meant is submitting to it once it is heard.
Urduاور انہیں کیا ہوا کہ جب ان کے سامنے قرآن پڑھا جاتا ہے تو وہ سجدہ نہیں کرتے اور اس کے حق کے آگے نہیں جھکتے؟
Arabicوما لهم إذا قُرِئَ عليهم القرآنُ لا يسجدون ولا يخضعون لما فيه من الحقِّ؟
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ
PickthallNay, but those who disbelieve will deny;
Yusuf AliBut on the contrary the Unbelievers reject (it).
The agreed readingRather, those who refuse are denying — denying the raising, the commentaries gloss, and what comes with it.
Urduبلکہ یہ کافر تو جھٹلا رہے ہیں۔ ان کا انکار کسی شبہے کا نتیجہ نہیں، بلکہ جان بوجھ کر تکذیب ہے۔
Arabicبل الذين كفروا يُكذِّبون بما جاءهم. فليس امتناعُهم لشُبهةٍ عرضَتْ لهم، وإنما هو تكذيبٌ مُتعمَّدٌ.
وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ
PickthallAnd Allah knoweth best what they are hiding.
Yusuf AliBut Allah has full knowledge of what they secrete (in their breasts)
The agreed readingand God knows best what they are storing up. The commentaries gloss the storing as what they gather in their records of refusal and denying and evil deeds.
Urduاور اللہ خوب جانتا ہے کہ یہ اپنے سینوں میں کیا کچھ بھرے ہوئے ہیں — تکذیب، بغض اور عداوت — اس سے کچھ بھی پوشیدہ نہیں۔
Arabicواللهُ أعلمُ بما يُضمِرونه في صدورِهم ويجمعونه من التكذيبِ والعداوةِ، لا يخفى عليه شيءٌ من ذلك.
فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
PickthallSo give them tidings of a painful doom,
Yusuf AliSo announce to them a Penalty Grievous,
The agreed readingSo give them the news of a painful punishment — news, the commentaries note, in a word ordinarily used of good news, and here turned against them.
Urduتو انہیں ایک دردناک عذاب کی خبر سنا دیجیے جو ان کا انتظار کر رہا ہے۔ اسے ”خوشخبری“ کہنا طنز اور تعریض کے طور پر ہے۔
Arabicفأخبِرْهم بعذابٍ أليمٍ مُوجِعٍ يَنتظِرُهم. وسُمِّي بشارةً على وجهِ التهكُّمِ بهم.
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭ
PickthallSave those who believe and do good works, for theirs is a reward unfailing.
Yusuf AliExcept to those who believe and work righteous deeds: For them is a Reward that will never fail.
The agreed readingexcept those who believe and do right; for them is a reward never cut off. The commentaries agree the reward is unbroken and undiminished, and that nothing is held over them for it.
Urduالبتہ جو لوگ ایمان لائے اور نیک عمل کیے، ان کے لیے ایسا اجر ہے جو کبھی کٹے گا نہیں اور نہ اس میں کوئی کمی ہوگی۔
Arabicلكنِ الذين آمنوا وعمِلوا الصالحاتِ لهم أجرٌ غيرُ مقطوعٍ ولا منقوصٍ، دائمٌ لا ينتهي.
