PickthallTa. Sin. Mim.
Yusuf AliTa. Sin. Mim.
The agreed readingTa Sin Mim. The letters stand at the head of the sūrah, and what follows them names what they open onto: the signs of the Book that makes things plain.
PickthallThese are revelations of the Scripture that maketh plain.
Yusuf AliThese are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.
The agreed readingThese are the signs of the Book that makes things clear - the commentaries gloss the word as showing what is true apart from what is false.
PickthallIt may be that thou tormentest thyself (O Muhammad) because they believe not.
Yusuf AliIt may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.
The agreed readingYou may well destroy yourself with grief because they will not believe. The words are put to him as a check: he is not answerable for their refusing.
PickthallIf We will, We can send down on them from the sky a portent so that their necks would remain bowed before it.
Yusuf AliIf (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.
The agreed readingHad God willed, He could send down a sign from the sky that would bend their necks and hold them bent, with belief compelled out of them. The condition is left standing unfulfilled.
PickthallNever cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it.
Yusuf AliBut there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.
The agreed readingAnd no fresh reminder comes to them from the Compassionate without their turning away from it. Each new one meets the same turning as the one before.
PickthallNow they have denied (the Truth); but there will come unto them tidings of that whereat they used to scoff.
Yusuf AliThey have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!
The agreed readingSo they have called it a lie; and news of the thing they mocked will reach them - the outcome arriving where the warning did not.
PickthallHave they not seen the earth, how much of every fruitful kind We make to grow therein?
Yusuf AliDo they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?
The agreed readingHave they not looked at the earth, and at how much of every fine kind has been made to grow in it?
PickthallLo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.
Yusuf AliVerily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
The agreed readingIn that there is a sign of what God's power reaches to. And most of them were not going to believe even so.

Yusuf AliAnd verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
The agreed readingAnd your Lord is the Mighty, who takes account of those who refuse, and the Merciful, who has mercy on those who believe.

PickthallThe folk of Pharaoh. Will they not ward off (evil)?
Yusuf Ali"The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"
The agreed readingThe people of Pharaoh. Will they not be mindful of God? They had wronged themselves by refusing Him, and wronged the Children of Israel by holding them as slaves.
PickthallHe said: My Lord! Lo! I fear that they will deny me,
Yusuf AliHe said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:
The agreed readingHe said: my Lord, I am afraid they will call me a liar. The fear is named plainly, and it is not held against him.
PickthallAnd I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send for Aaron (to help me).
Yusuf Ali"My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.
The agreed readingMy chest will tighten under their denial, and my tongue will not run freely, for there was a knot in it. So send to Aaron and let him come with me.
PickthallAnd they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.
Yusuf Ali"And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."
The agreed readingAnd they have a charge against me - the man of theirs whose death I caused - so I fear that they will kill me for it.
PickthallHe said: Nay, verily. So go ye twain with Our tokens. Lo! We shall be with you, Hearing.
Yusuf AliAllah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).
The agreed readingGod said: no, they will not. Go, the two of you, with Our signs; We are with you both, and We are listening to everything that passes.
PickthallAnd come together unto Pharaoh and say: Lo! we bear a message of the Lord of the Worlds,
Yusuf Ali"So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;
The agreed readingSo go to Pharaoh and say: each of us is a messenger of the Lord of the worlds, sent to you.
Pickthall(Saying): Let the Children of Israel go with us.
Yusuf Ali"'Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'"
The agreed readingSend the Children of Israel away with us and let them go: that is the thing we were sent to say.
Pickthall(Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us,
Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?
The agreed readingPharaoh said: did we not bring you up in our own houses when you were a small child, and did you not stay among us for years of your life?
PickthallAnd thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates.
Yusuf Ali"And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"
The agreed readingAnd you did the thing you did - the killing - and you are one of those who are ungrateful for what was done for them.
PickthallHe said: I did it then, when I was of those who are astray.
Yusuf AliMoses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.
The agreed readingHe said: I did it at a time when I was among those who did not know, before what my Lord gave me afterwards.
PickthallThen I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).
Yusuf Ali"So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.
The agreed readingSo I fled from you when I feared you; and my Lord gave me knowledge and judgement, and made me one of the messengers.
PickthallAnd this is the past favour wherewith thou reproachest me: that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel.
Yusuf Ali"And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"
The agreed readingAnd the favour you throw at me is this: that you made slaves of the Children of Israel. Bringing up one child is no favour from a man who enslaved the whole people that child came from.
PickthallPharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the Worlds?
Yusuf AliPharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

Pickthall(Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.
Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."
The agreed readingMoses said: the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them - the maker of all of it - if you have any certainty at all.
Pickthall(Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?
Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"
The agreed readingPharaoh said to the chiefs around him: do you hear that? He meant that the answer had not matched the question he asked.
PickthallHe said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers.
Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"
The agreed readingMoses said: your Lord, and the Lord of your fathers before you. It was already contained in what he had said; saying it again put it where it would sting.
Pickthall(Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!

Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"
The agreed readingMoses said: the Lord of the east and the west and everything between them, if you would use your minds on it.
Pickthall(Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.
Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"
The agreed readingPharaoh said: if you take a god other than me, I will put you among the prisoners. The commentaries describe what that prison was: a man kept alone underground, seeing nothing and hearing nothing.
PickthallHe said: Even though I show thee something plain?
Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!"
The agreed readingPharaoh said: bring it out, then, if you are one of those who tell the truth about themselves.

Yusuf AliSo (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!
The agreed readingSo he threw down his staff, and it was a serpent, huge and plain to see, with nothing hidden about it.
PickthallAnd he drew forth his hand and lo! it was white to the beholders.
Yusuf AliAnd he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!
The agreed readingAnd he drew his hand out of his garment, and it came out white and shining before the eyes of those watching, not as it had been.
Pickthall(Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,
Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:
The agreed readingPharaoh said to the chiefs around him: this man is a magician who knows his craft - the charge he reached for to account for what he had just seen.

PickthallWho would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?
Yusuf Ali"His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?"
The agreed readingHe means to drive you out of your own land with his magic. So what do you advise? The question turns the matter into one of the state, not of the truth.

PickthallWho shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.
Yusuf Ali"And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."
The agreed readingTo bring you every magician who knows the craft - one who can outmatch him at his own work.
PickthallSo the wizards were gathered together at a set time on a day appointed.
Yusuf AliSo the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known,
The agreed readingSo the magicians were brought together at a set hour on a day fixed for it: the commentaries name the morning of a festival day.
PickthallAnd it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering?
Yusuf AliAnd the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?-

Yusuf Ali"That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win?"
The agreed readingSo that we may follow the magicians, they said, if they turn out to be the winners - which is to say, so that we may stay as we are.
PickthallAnd when the wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?
Yusuf AliSo when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: "Of course - shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win?
The agreed readingAnd when the magicians came, they asked Pharaoh whether there would be a payment for them if they were the ones who won.
PickthallHe said: Aye, and ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).
Yusuf AliHe said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."
The agreed readingHe said: yes - and more than payment: you will be among those brought close to me.
PickthallMoses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw!
Yusuf AliMoses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!"
The agreed readingMoses said to them: throw whatever it is you are going to throw. He let them go first.
PickthallThen they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners.
Yusuf AliSo they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!"
The agreed readingSo they threw down their ropes and their staffs and said: by Pharaoh's might, we are the ones who will win. The commentaries note what it was they swore by.
PickthallThen Moses threw his staff and lo! it swallowed that which they did falsely show.
Yusuf AliThen Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!
The agreed readingThen Moses threw his staff, and it swallowed up the things they had faked - what they had turned over before the people's eyes.
PickthallAnd the wizards were flung prostrate,
Yusuf AliThen did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,
The agreed readingAnd the magicians were thrown down prostrate: the word is of falling, not of choosing to kneel.

PickthallCrying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
Yusuf AliSaying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

Pickthall(Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one.
Yusuf AliSaid (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!"
The agreed readingPharaoh said: you have believed him before I gave you leave. He must be your master, the one who taught you magic. You will find out: I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify every one of you.

Yusuf AliThey said: "No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!
The agreed readingThey said: there is no harm in it. Whichever way we go, we are going back to our Lord.

Yusuf Ali(Saying): "These (Israelites) are but a small band,

PickthallAnd lo! they are offenders against us.
Yusuf Ali"And they are raging furiously against us;
The agreed readingAnd they are doing what enrages us, he said. The leaving itself was the offence.
PickthallAnd lo! we are a ready host.
Yusuf Ali"But we are a multitude amply fore-warned."
The agreed readingAnd we are a whole host, he said, armed and on our guard, with nothing to fear from a band of runaways.
PickthallThus did We take them away from gardens and watersprings,
Yusuf AliSo We expelled them from gardens, springs,
The agreed readingSo they were brought out of their gardens and their springs; the going out was their own doing, and it was God who brought them out of it.

PickthallThen We inspired Moses, saying: Smite the sea with thy staff. And it parted, and each part was as a mountain vast.
Yusuf AliThen We told Moses by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.
The agreed readingThen Moses was told: strike the sea with your staff. He struck it, and it split apart, and every part of it stood up like a great mountain.
PickthallThen brought We near the others to that place.
