Surah 29 of 114 · Makki · 69 ayat
Al-'Ankabut
The Spider
PickthallAlif. Lam. Mim.
Yusuf AliA. L. M.
The agreed readingAlif Lam Mim. The letters are recited as letters, and their certain meaning is left with God.
PickthallDo men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction?
Yusuf AliDo men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?
The agreed readingDo people think they will be left alone because they say we believe, without being put to trial? The trial is what brings out whether the word was true, and the commentaries take it as a testing in a person's own self and in their wealth.
PickthallLo! We tested those who were before you. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign.
Yusuf AliWe did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.
The agreed readingAnd God tested those who came before them. This is an old way, running through every community, and no one should look to be spared it. God will surely know those who spoke the truth in their belief, knowing it as a thing seen, and will surely know the liars.
PickthallOr do those who do ill-deeds imagine that they can outstrip Us? Evil (for them) is that which they decide.
Yusuf AliDo those who practise evil think that they will get the better of Us? Evil is their judgment!
The agreed readingOr do those who do evil deeds think they will get past God, escaping so that nothing comes back on them? What they have judged is a bad judgement.
PickthallWhoso looketh forward to the meeting with Allah (let him know that) Allah's reckoning is surely nigh, and He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Yusuf AliFor those whose hopes are in the meeting with Allah (in the Hereafter, let them strive); for the term (appointed) by Allah is surely coming and He hears and knows (all things).
The agreed readingWhoever hopes for the meeting with God: the term God has set is coming, so let him make ready for it. He is the Hearing, who hears what His servants say, and the Knowing, who knows what they do.
PickthallAnd whosoever striveth, striveth only for himself, for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of (His) creatures.
Yusuf AliAnd if any strive (with might and main), they do so for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation.
The agreed readingAnd whoever strives, whether against an enemy or against himself, strives for his own sake: the good of that striving comes back to him and not to God. God has no need of the worlds, and no need of their obedience.
PickthallAnd as for those who believe and do good works, We shall remit from them their evil deeds and shall repay them the best that they did.
Yusuf AliThose who believe and work righteous deeds,- from them shall We blot out all evil (that may be) in them, and We shall reward them according to the best of their deeds.
The agreed readingAnd those who believe and do what is right: God will wipe their evil deeds away from them, wiped out by the good they do, and will reward them according to the best of what they did.
PickthallWe have enjoined on man kindness to parents; but if they strive to make thee join with Me that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return and I shall tell you what ye used to do.
Yusuf AliWe have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me (in worship) anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not. Ye have (all) to return to me, and I will tell you (the truth) of all that ye did.
The agreed readingAnd God charged the human being to treat his parents well. But if they press you to set up with God something you have no knowledge of, do not obey them in that. The denial is put as a denial of knowledge, because what cannot be known to be true is not to be followed. To God is your return, and He will tell you what you were doing.
PickthallAnd as for those who believe and do good works, We verily shall make them enter in among the righteous.
Yusuf AliAnd those who believe and work righteous deeds,- them shall We admit to the company of the Righteous.
The agreed readingAnd those who believe and do what is right, God will bring in among the righteous, gathering them with the prophets and with those close to Him.
PickthallOf mankind is he who saith: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistaketh the persecution of mankind for Allah's punishment; and then, if victory cometh from thy Lord, will say: Lo! we were with you (all the while). Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the bosoms of (His) creatures?
Yusuf AliThen there are among men such as say, "We believe in Allah"; but when they suffer affliction in (the cause of) Allah, they treat men's oppression as if it were the Wrath of Allah! And if help comes (to thee) from thy Lord, they are sure to say, "We have (always) been with you!" Does not Allah know best all that is in the hearts of all creation?
The agreed readingAnd among people is one who says: we believe in God. But when he is made to suffer for God's sake he treats the persecution people deal out as though it were God's own punishment, fearing it in the same way and giving in to them, which is to be a hypocrite. Then if help comes from your Lord they say: we were with you all along. Does God not know best what is in the breasts of all His creatures?
PickthallVerily Allah knoweth those who believe, and verily He knoweth the hypocrites.
Yusuf AliAnd Allah most certainly knows those who believe, and as certainly those who are Hypocrites.
The agreed readingAnd God will surely know those who believe with their hearts, and will surely know the hypocrites, and will repay each of the two.
PickthallThose who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Follow our way (of religion) and we verily will bear your sins (for you). They cannot bear aught of their sins. Lo! they verily are liars.
Yusuf AliAnd the Unbelievers say to those who believe: "Follow our path, and we will bear (the consequences) of your faults." Never in the least will they bear their faults: in fact they are liars!
The agreed readingAnd those who refuse say to those who believe: follow our way, and we will carry your sins for you. Their argument was that what the believers feared was nothing, and that if it turned out to be real they would carry it themselves. They will carry nothing of those sins. They are liars.
PickthallBut they verily will bear their own loads and other loads beside their own, and they verily will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning that which they invented.
Yusuf AliThey will bear their own burdens, and (other) burdens along with their own, and on the Day of Judgments they will be called to account for their falsehoods.
The agreed readingAnd they will carry their own loads, and other loads on top of their own: the weight of having said follow our way, and the weight of those they led astray by saying it. On the Day of Rising they will be questioned about everything they invented.
PickthallAnd verily we sent Noah (as Our messenger) unto his folk, and he continued with them for a thousand years save fifty years; and the flood engulfed them, for they were wrong-doers.
Yusuf AliWe (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin.
The agreed readingAnd God sent Noah to his people, calling them to God's oneness, and they called him a liar. He stayed among them a thousand years less fifty. Then the flood took them, the great water that went round them and rose over them until they drowned, and they were wrongdoers.
PickthallAnd We rescued him and those with him in the ship, and made of it a portent for the peoples.
Yusuf AliBut We saved him and the companions of the Ark, and We made the (Ark) a Sign for all peoples!
The agreed readingAnd God saved Noah and those who were with him in the ship, and made it a sign for all the worlds, a thing to take warning from and to reason by.
PickthallAnd Abraham! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Serve Allah, and keep your duty unto Him; that is better for you if ye did but know.
Yusuf AliAnd (We also saved) Abraham: behold, he said to his people, "Serve Allah and fear Him: that will be best for you- If ye understand!
The agreed readingAnd Abraham, when he said to his people: worship God and be mindful of God. That is better for you than what you are on, the worship of idols, if you knew good from anything else.
PickthallYe serve instead of Allah only idols, and ye only invent a lie. Lo! those whom ye serve instead of Allah own no provision for you. So seek your provision from Allah, and serve Him, and give thanks unto Him, (for) unto Him ye will be brought back.
Yusuf Ali"For ye do worship idols besides Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye worship besides Allah have no power to give you sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your return.
The agreed readingYou worship only idols besides God, and you make up a lie in calling them gods and claiming they will intercede for you with God. Those you worship besides God own no provision to give you. So seek provision from God, and worship Him, and give Him thanks. To Him you will be returned.
PickthallBut if ye deny, then nations have denied before you. The messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.
Yusuf Ali"And if ye reject (the Message), so did generations before you: and the duty of the messenger is only to preach publicly (and clearly)."
The agreed readingAnd if you call it a lie, communities before you called it a lie, and their doing so harmed no one but themselves. The messenger has nothing laid on him but to deliver the message plainly.
PickthallSee they not how Allah produceth creation, then reproduceth it? Lo! for Allah that is easy.
Yusuf AliSee they not how Allah originates creation, then repeats it: truly that is easy for Allah.
The agreed readingHave they not looked at how God begins the creation and then repeats it? That is an easy thing for God.
PickthallSay (O Muhammad): Travel in the land and see how He originated creation, then Allah bringeth forth the later growth. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things.
Yusuf AliSay: "Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power over all things.
The agreed readingSay: travel through the land and see how God began the creation of those who came before you, and how He brought them to their end. Then God raises up the later growth. God is able to do everything.
PickthallHe punisheth whom He will and showeth mercy unto whom He will, and unto Him ye will be turned.
Yusuf Ali"He punishes whom He pleases, and He grants Mercy to whom He pleases, and towards Him are ye turned.
The agreed readingHe punishes whom He wills and shows mercy to whom He wills, and it is to Him that you will be turned back.
PickthallYe cannot escape (from Him) in the earth or in the sky, and beside Allah there is for you no friend or helper.
Yusuf Ali"Not on earth nor in heaven will ye be able (fleeing) to frustrate (his Plan), nor have ye, besides Allah, any protector or helper."
The agreed readingAnd you cannot get beyond God's reach, not in the earth and not in the sky, were you to be there. And you have no protector and no helper besides God.
PickthallThose who disbelieve in the revelations of Allah and in (their) Meeting with Him, such have no hope of My mercy. For such there is a painful doom.
Yusuf AliThose who reject the Signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter),- it is they who shall despair of My Mercy: it is they who will (suffer) a most grievous Penalty.
The agreed readingAnd those who refuse God's signs and refuse that they will meet Him have given up all hope of His mercy and of the Garden, and there is a painful punishment waiting for them.
PickthallBut the answer of his folk was only that they said: "Kill him" or "Burn him." Then Allah saved him from the Fire. Lo! herein verily are portents for folk who believe.
Yusuf AliSo naught was the answer of (Abraham's) people except that they said: "Slay him or burn him." But Allah did save him from the Fire. Verily in this are Signs for people who believe.
The agreed readingHis people had no answer but to say: kill him, or burn him. The proof had been made plain against them and they had nothing left but force. Then God saved him from the fire, making it cool and safe for him. In that there are signs for a people who believe.
PickthallHe said: Ye have chosen only idols instead of Allah. The love between you is only in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection ye will deny each other and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and ye will have no helpers.
Yusuf AliAnd he said: "For you, ye have taken (for worship) idols besides Allah, out of mutual love and regard between yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgment ye shall disown each other and curse each other: and your abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help."
The agreed readingHe said: you have taken up idols instead of God only for the affection that holds you together in this life, loving one another over the worship of them. Then on the Day of Rising you will deny one another and curse one another, your refuge will be the Fire, and you will have no helpers.
PickthallAnd Lot believed him, and said: Lo! I am a fugitive unto my Lord. Lo! He, only He, is the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf AliBut Lut had faith in Him: He said: "I will leave home for the sake of my Lord: for He is Exalted in Might, and Wise."
The agreed readingAnd Lot believed him. And Abraham said: I am leaving my people and emigrating to my Lord. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
PickthallAnd We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and We established the prophethood and the Scripture among his seed, and We gave him his reward in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he verily is among the righteous.
Yusuf AliAnd We gave (Abraham) Isaac and Jacob, and ordained among his progeny Prophethood and Revelation, and We granted him his reward in this life; and he was in the Hereafter (of the company) of the Righteous.
The agreed readingAnd God gave him Isaac, and Jacob after him, and placed prophethood and the Book in his offspring, so that every prophet after Abraham came from his line. God gave him his reward in this world, and in the world to come he is among the righteous.
PickthallAnd Lot! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Lo! ye commit lewdness such as no creature did before you.
Yusuf AliAnd (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you.
The agreed readingAnd Lot, when he said to his people: you commit an indecency that no one in all the worlds committed before you. The words carry astonishment and rejection together.
PickthallFor come ye not in unto males, and cut ye not the road (for travellers), and commit ye not abomination in your meetings? But the answer of his folk was only that they said: Bring Allah's doom upon us if thou art a truthteller!
Yusuf Ali"Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth."
The agreed readingDo you go to men, and cut the road, doing this to travellers who passed by until people stopped passing that way at all, and commit what is wrong openly in your gatherings? His people had no answer but to say: bring us God's punishment, if you are telling the truth.
PickthallHe said: My Lord! Give me victory over folk who work corruption.
Yusuf AliHe said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!"
The agreed readingHe said: my Lord, help me against the people who spread ruin. He asked that his word be made true and the punishment sent down. They are called those who spread ruin because what they did ruins the earth and cuts off any offspring from it.
PickthallAnd when Our messengers brought Abraham the good news, they said: Lo! we are about to destroy the people of that township, for its people are wrong-doers.
Yusuf AliWhen Our Messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said: "We are indeed going to destroy the people of this township: for truly they are (addicted to) crime."
The agreed readingAnd when God's messengers came to Abraham with the good news of Isaac, and of Jacob after him, they said: we are going to destroy the people of this town, the town of Lot, for its people are wrongdoers.
PickthallHe said: Lo! Lot is there. They said: We are best aware of who is there. We are to deliver him and his household, all save his wife, who is of those who stay behind.
Yusuf AliHe said: "But there is Lut there." They said: "Well do we know who is there: we will certainly save him and his following,- except his wife: she is of those who lag behind!"
The agreed readingHe said: but Lot is in it. He said it to turn the punishment away, since destroying the town's people would take him with them. They said: we know better than you who is in it. We will save him and his household, except his wife, who is of those who stay behind.
PickthallAnd when Our messengers came unto Lot, he was troubled upon their account, for he could not protect them; but they said: Fear not, nor grieve! Lo! we are to deliver thee and thy household, (all) save thy wife, who is of those who stay behind.
Yusuf AliAnd when Our Messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account, and felt himself powerless (to protect) them: but they said: "Fear thou not, nor grieve: we are (here) to save thee and thy following, except thy wife: she is of those who lag behind.
The agreed readingAnd when God's messengers came to Lot he was troubled on their account and felt himself powerless to protect them, for they had come in the form of guests and he feared what his people would do. They said: do not fear and do not grieve. We are going to save you and your household, except your wife, who is of those who stay behind.
PickthallLo! We are about to bring down upon the folk of this township a fury from the sky because they are evil-livers.
Yusuf Ali"For we are going to bring down on the people of this township a Punishment from heaven, because they have been wickedly rebellious."
The agreed readingWe are bringing down on the people of this town a punishment out of the sky, for the way they had left obedience.
PickthallAnd verily of that We have left a clear sign for people who have sense.
Yusuf AliAnd We have left thereof an evident Sign, for any people who (care to) understand.
The agreed readingAnd God has left of that town a clear sign, the traces of its ruin, for a people who use their reason and take the warning from it.
PickthallAnd unto Midian We sent Shu'eyb, their brother. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.
Yusuf AliTo the Madyan (people) (We sent) their brother Shu'aib. Then he said: "O my people! serve Allah, and fear the Last Day: nor commit evil on the earth, with intent to do mischief."
The agreed readingAnd to Midian God sent their brother Shuayb. He said: my people, worship God and look for the Last Day, believing that you will be returned to Him. And do not go about the earth spreading ruin.
PickthallBut they denied him, and the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place.
Yusuf AliBut they rejected him: Then the mighty Blast seized them, and they lay prostrate in their homes by the morning.
The agreed readingBut they called him a liar, and the great shaking took them, and morning found them in their homes brought down on their knees, dead and unmoving.
PickthallAnd (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud! (Their fate) is manifest unto you from their (ruined and deserted) dwellings. Satan made their deeds seem fair unto them and so debarred them from the Way, though they were keen observers.
Yusuf Ali(Remember also) the 'Ad and the Thamud (people): clearly will appear to you from (the traces) of their buildings (their fate): the Evil One made their deeds alluring to them, and kept them back from the Path, though they were gifted with intelligence and skill.
The agreed readingAnd ʿAd and Thamud, and what became of them is plain to you from the dwellings they left behind. Satan made their deeds look beautiful to them and turned them off the road, and this although they were people with sight and understanding.
PickthallAnd Korah, Pharaoh and Haman! Moses came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they were boastful in the land. And they were not winners (in the race).
Yusuf Ali(Remember also) Qarun, Pharaoh, and Haman: there came to them Moses with Clear Signs, but they behaved with insolence on the earth; yet they could not overreach (Us).
The agreed readingAnd Korah and Pharaoh and Haman. Moses came to them with plain proofs, and they made themselves great in the land. But they never got ahead of God, and nothing they did put them beyond His punishment.
PickthallSo We took each one in his sin; of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them was he whom We drowned. It was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
Yusuf AliEach one of them We seized for his crime: of them, against some We sent a violent tornado (with showers of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters): It was not Allah Who injured (or oppressed) them:" They injured (and oppressed) their own souls.
The agreed readingSo God seized each of them for his own sin. Against some He sent a storm wind carrying stones; some were taken by the Cry; some the earth swallowed; and some were drowned. Each punishment answered the crime. God did not wrong them; it was they who wronged themselves.
PickthallThe likeness of those who choose other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider's house, if they but knew.
Yusuf AliThe parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the spider's house;- if they but knew.
The agreed readingThe likeness of those who take protectors besides God, hoping for benefit from idols, is the likeness of the spider that made itself a house to shelter in. And the frailest of all houses is the spider's house, if only they knew it.
PickthallLo! Allah knoweth what thing they invoke instead of Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf AliVerily Allah doth know of (every thing) whatever that they call upon besides Him: and He is Exalted (in power), Wise.
The agreed readingGod knows whatever it is they call on besides Him. He is the Mighty in His kingdom, and the Wise.
PickthallAs for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise.
Yusuf AliAnd such are the Parables We set forth for mankind, but only those understand them who have knowledge.
The agreed readingAnd these likenesses God sets out for people, and no one understands them except those who know, who turn them over and reflect on them.
PickthallAllah created the heavens and the earth with truth. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers.
Yusuf AliAllah created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): verily in that is a Sign for those who believe.
The agreed readingGod created the heavens and the earth truly, and not for nothing. In that there is a sign pointing to His power, and the believers are named here because they are the ones who take it as one.
PickthallRecite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do.
Yusuf AliRecite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.
The agreed readingRecite what has been revealed to you of the Book, and establish the prayer. The prayer, by its own nature, keeps a person from indecency and from what is wrong, for as long as he holds to it. And the remembrance of God is greater still. God knows what you do.
PickthallAnd argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.
Yusuf AliAnd dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."
The agreed readingAnd do not argue with the People of the Book except in the best way, calling to God by His signs and pointing to His proofs, save with those of them who do wrong. And say: we believe in what was sent down to us and in what was sent down to you; our God and your God is one; and to Him we submit.
PickthallIn like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our revelations save the disbelievers.
Yusuf AliAnd thus (it is) that We have sent down the Book to thee. So the People of the Book believe therein, as also do some of these (pagan Arabs): and none but Unbelievers reject our signs.
The agreed readingAnd so God sent the Book down to you, as He sent down the Books before it. Those to whom He gave the earlier Book believe in it, the learned among them, and of the people here there are some who believe in it too. No one denies God's signs except those who refuse.
PickthallAnd thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood.
Yusuf AliAnd thou wast not (able) to recite a Book before this (Book came), nor art thou (able) to transcribe it with thy right hand: In that case, indeed, would the talkers of vanities have doubted.
The agreed readingAnd you were not reciting any Book before this one, nor writing one out with your own hand. Had you been a reader and a writer, those who follow what is false would have had a doubt to raise.
PickthallBut it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers.
Yusuf AliNay, here are Signs self-evident in the hearts of those endowed with knowledge: and none but the unjust reject Our Signs.
The agreed readingRather, this Qur'an is clear signs held in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge, who keep it by heart. And no one denies God's signs except wrongdoers.
PickthallAnd they say: Why are not portents sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: Portents are with Allah only, and I am but a plain warner.
Yusuf AliYe they say: "Why are not Signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say: "The signs are indeed with Allah: and I am indeed a clear Warner."
The agreed readingAnd they said: why has no sign been sent down on him from his Lord, of the kind given to those before him, the she-camel or the staff? Say: the signs are with God, and the matter rests with Him. I am only a plain warner.
PickthallIs it not enough for them that We have sent down unto thee the Scripture which is read unto them? Lo! herein verily is mercy, and a reminder for folk who believe.
Yusuf AliAnd is it not enough for them that we have sent down to thee the Book which is rehearsed to them? Verily, in it is Mercy and a Reminder to those who believe.
The agreed readingIs it not enough for them that God sent down to you the Book that is recited to them? Unlike the signs they asked for, this one does not pass away: it goes on being recited. In it there is mercy and a reminder for a people who believe.
PickthallSay (unto them, O Muhammad): Allah sufficeth for witness between me and you. He knoweth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those who believe in vanity and disbelieve in Allah, they it is who are the losers.
Yusuf AliSay: "Enough is Allah for a witness between me and you: He knows what is in the heavens and on earth. And it is those who believe in vanities and reject Allah, that will perish (in the end).
The agreed readingSay: God is enough as a witness between me and you, a witness to the truth of what I say. He knows what is in the heavens and the earth, and my state and yours are part of what He knows. Those who believe in what is false and refuse God are the ones who lose.
PickthallThey bid thee hasten on the doom (of Allah). And if a term had not been appointed, the doom would assuredly have come unto them (ere now). And verily it will come upon them suddenly when they perceive not.
Yusuf AliThey ask thee to hasten on the Punishment (for them): had it not been for a term (of respite) appointed, the Punishment would certainly have come to them: and it will certainly reach them,- of a sudden, while they perceive not!
The agreed readingAnd they press you to hurry the punishment on. Had a term not been set for it, it would have come to them at once. And it will come upon them suddenly, at an hour they do not see coming.

Yusuf AliThey ask thee to hasten on the Punishment: but, of a surety, Hell will encompass the Rejecters of Faith!-
The agreed readingThey press you to hurry on the punishment of this world, while Hell is already closing round those who refuse.
PickthallOn the day when the doom will overwhelm them from above them and from underneath their feet, and He will say: Taste what ye used to do!
Yusuf AliOn the Day that the Punishment shall cover them from above them and from below them, and (a Voice) shall say: "Taste ye (the fruits) of your deeds!"
The agreed readingOn the Day when the punishment covers them from above them and from beneath their feet, and it is said: taste what you were doing. What they taste is what their own deeds came to.
PickthallO my bondmen who believe! Lo! My earth is spacious. Therefor serve Me only.
Yusuf AliO My servants who believe! truly, spacious is My Earth: therefore serve ye Me - (and Me alone)!
The agreed readingMy servants who believe: My earth is wide. So worship Me, and where worship is made hard for you in one land, go to another where it is not. It was said when things had become too hard for the believers where they were.
PickthallEvery soul will taste of death. Then unto Us ye will be returned.
Yusuf AliEvery soul shall have a taste of death in the end to Us shall ye be brought back.
The agreed readingEvery soul will taste death, and there is no escaping it in any place or any state. Then to God you will be returned, after you are raised.
PickthallThose who believe and do good works, them verily We shall house in lofty dwellings of the Garden underneath which rivers flow. There they will dwell secure. How sweet the guerdon of the toilers,
Yusuf AliBut those who believe and work deeds of righteousness - to them shall We give a Home in Heaven,- lofty mansions beneath which flow rivers,- to dwell therein for aye;- an excellent reward for those who do (good)!-
The agreed readingAnd those who believe and do what is right, God will settle in lofty chambers of the Garden with rivers running beneath them, and there they will stay. Excellent is the wage of those who work for it.
PickthallWho persevere, and put their trust in their Lord!
Yusuf AliThose who persevere in patience, and put their trust, in their Lord and Cherisher.
The agreed readingThose who kept patience under the harm done to them, and under the leaving of their homes so that the religion could stand plain, and who put their trust in their Lord, so that He provides for them from where they never counted on.
PickthallAnd how many an animal there is that beareth not its own provision! Allah provideth for it and for you. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Yusuf AliHow many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (both) them and you: for He hears and knows (all things).
The agreed readingAnd how many a creature there is that cannot carry its own provision, being too weak for it. God provides for it and provides for you, even when you set out with nothing in your hands. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
PickthallAnd if thou wert to ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, and constrained the sun and the moon (to their appointed work)? they would say: Allah. How then are they turned away?
Yusuf AliIf indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded away (from the truth)?
The agreed readingAnd if you asked them who created the heavens and the earth and set the sun and the moon to their work, they would say: God. How then are they turned away from Him?
PickthallAllah maketh the provision wide for whom He will of His bondmen, and straiteneth it for whom (He will). Lo! Allah is Aware of all things.
Yusuf AliAllah enlarges the sustenance (which He gives) to whichever of His servants He pleases; and He (similarly) grants by (strict) measure, (as He pleases): for Allah has full knowledge of all things.
The agreed readingGod spreads out provision for whom He wills of His servants and narrows it for whom He wills, and both are a test. He wills it only as what is right requires. God knows everything.
PickthallAnd if thou wert to ask them: Who causeth water to come down from the sky, and therewith reviveth the earth after its death? they verily would say: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most of them have no sense.
Yusuf AliAnd if indeed thou ask them who it is that sends down rain from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death, they will certainly reply, "Allah!" Say, "Praise be to Allah!" But most of them understand not.
The agreed readingAnd if you asked them who sent water down from the sky and brought the earth back to life with it after it was dead, the plants coming up in the spring, they would say: God. Say: praise belongs to God, for by their own answer the argument is complete against them. But most of them do not use their reason.
PickthallThis life of the world is but a pastime and a game. Lo! the home of the Hereafter - that is Life, if they but knew.
Yusuf AliWhat is the life of this world but amusement and play? but verily the Home in the Hereafter,- that is life indeed, if they but knew.
The agreed readingAnd this life of the world is nothing but diversion and play, passing and quick to come to nothing, like children who gather over a game, are taken with it for an hour, and then scatter. The home of the world to come is the life indeed, the one that never ends, if only they knew.
PickthallAnd when they mount upon the ships they pray to Allah, making their faith pure for Him only, but when He bringeth them safe to land, behold! they ascribe partners (unto Him),
Yusuf AliNow, if they embark on a boat, they call on Allah, making their devotion sincerely (and exclusively) to Him; but when He has delivered them safely to (dry) land, behold, they give a share (of their worship to others)!-
The agreed readingAnd when they board the ships they call on God, making the call sincerely His alone, for they are in a hardship that no one but He can lift. Then when He brings them safe to land they go straight back to setting up partners with Him.
PickthallThat they may disbelieve in that which We have given them, and that they may take their ease. But they will come to know.
Yusuf AliDisdaining ungratefully Our gifts, and giving themselves up to (worldly) enjoyment! But soon will they know.
The agreed readingSo they end up ungrateful for what God has given them, and take their enjoyment. But they will come to know what it comes to.
PickthallHave they not seen that We have appointed a sanctuary immune (from violence), while mankind are ravaged all around them? Do they then believe in falsehood and disbelieve in the bounty of Allah?
Yusuf AliDo they not then see that We have made a sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from all around them? Then, do they believe in that which is vain, and reject the Grace of Allah?
The agreed readingHave they not seen that God made their town a sanctuary that is secure, where no one is set upon with killing or captivity or plunder, while people are snatched away all around them outside it? Do they then believe in what is false and refuse God's favour?
PickthallWho doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah, or denieth the truth when it cometh unto him? Is not there a home in hell for disbelievers?
Yusuf AliAnd who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects the Truth when it reaches him? Is there not a home in Hell for those who reject Faith?
The agreed readingAnd who does a greater wrong than one who invents a lie against God, by setting up partners with Him, or who calls the truth a lie when it has come to him? Is there not a lodging in Hell for those who refuse?
PickthallAs for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good.
Yusuf AliAnd those who strive in Our (cause),- We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right.
The agreed readingAnd those who strive for God's sake, He will guide to His paths, the roads that lead to Him. And God is with those who do good. The commentaries take the striving to cover more than one field: against an outward enemy, against Satan, and against the self.
