The Sovereignty

PickthallBlessed is He in Whose hand is the Sovereignty, and, He is Able to do all things.

Yusuf AliBlessed be He in Whose hands is Dominion; and He over all things hath Power;-

The agreed readingBlessed is He in whose hand is all sovereignty, and He is able to do all things. The commentaries open it together: every rule, power and disposal of affairs belongs to Him alone — blessed meaning exalted, and inexhaustible in the good that flows from Him.

67:2#

PickthallWho hath created life and death that He may try you which of you is best in conduct; and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving,

Yusuf AliHe Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed: and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving;-

The agreed readingHe created death and life to test you: which of you is best in deed. The commentaries stress the same point — the measure is the quality of the deed, not the quantity — and the two names that close the verse hold the two ends of the test: Mighty against those who defy Him, Forgiving to those who turn back.

PickthallWho hath created seven heavens in harmony. Thou (Muhammad) canst see no fault in the Beneficent One's creation; then look again: Canst thou see any rifts?

Yusuf AliHe Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of (Allah) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?

The agreed readingHe created seven heavens in layers, one above another, and in the creation of the Compassionate no disproportion can be seen — nothing out of joint, nothing that fails to fit. So return your gaze: do you see any crack?

PickthallThen look again and yet again, thy sight will return unto thee weakened and made dim.

Yusuf AliAgain turn thy vision a second time: (thy) vision will come back to thee dull and discomfited, in a state worn out.

The agreed readingThen look again, and again — the commentaries take the 'twice' as looking over and over — and your sight comes back to you humbled and worn out, having found no flaw.

PickthallAnd verily We have beautified the world's heaven with lamps, and We have made them missiles for the devils, and for them We have prepared the doom of flame.

Yusuf AliAnd we have, (from of old), adorned the lowest heaven with Lamps, and We have made such (Lamps) (as) missiles to drive away the Evil Ones, and have prepared for them the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.

The agreed readingWe adorned the nearest heaven with lamps — the stars — and made them missiles against the devils who steal a hearing, the shooting flames driven from them. And for the devils We have prepared the punishment of the Blaze.

PickthallAnd for those who disbelieve in their Lord there is the doom of hell, a hapless journey's end!

Yusuf AliFor those who reject their Lord (and Cherisher) is the Penalty of Hell: and evil is (such), Destination.

The agreed readingAnd for those who refuse their Lord is the punishment of Hell — a wretched journey's end.

PickthallWhen they are flung therein they hear its roaring as it boileth up,

Yusuf AliWhen they are cast therein, they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath even as it blazes forth,

Yusuf AliAlmost bursting with fury: Every time a Group is cast therein, its Keepers will ask, "Did no Warner come to you?"

2. A number of our people has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir from abu ‘Abdallah (a.s.) who has said the following. “Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, has two kinds of knowledge. One kind is His only and no creature knows about it. The other kind is that which He has thrown unto His angels and His Messenger. Whatever is thrown to the angels and the Messengers have reached us.”

Imam (as) said: "If he has completed more than half of the tawaf and then left forgetting to complete it, he may appoint someone to complete the tawaf on his behalf. In this case, he is permitted to approach women if he has completed more than half of the tawaf."
‘Umar said:“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds: They go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening.”

Yusuf AliDo ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?

The agreed readingDo you feel safe from Him who is in the heaven, that He should not make the earth swallow you as it heaves? The commentaries set it against the verse before: the earth made tame for your walking can, at His word, shake beneath you.

PickthallOr have ye taken security from Him Who is in the heaven that He will not let loose on you a hurricane? But ye shall know the manner of My warning.

Yusuf AliOr do ye feel secure that He Who is in Heaven will not send against you a violent tornado (with showers of stones), so that ye shall know how (terrible) was My warning?

The agreed readingOr safe that He should not loose against you a wind hurling stones? Then you will know how My warning was — and the commentaries add together: you will know it at the sight of the punishment, when knowing no longer helps.

PickthallAnd verily those before them denied, then (see) the manner of My wrath (with them)!

Yusuf AliBut indeed men before them rejected (My warning): then how (terrible) was My rejection (of them)?

The agreed readingThose before them denied, and how was My rejection of them! The punishments that fell on earlier communities are already fact — warning enough of what denial earns.

PickthallHave they not seen the birds above them spreading out their wings and closing them? Naught upholdeth them save the Beneficent. Lo! He is Seer of all things.

Yusuf AliDo they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things.

The agreed readingHave they not seen the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them? Nothing holds them up in the air but the Compassionate. The commentaries read the sign identically: flight has no support but His power, and He sees all things.

PickthallOr who is he that will be an army unto you to help you instead of the Beneficent? The disbelievers are in naught but illusion.

Yusuf AliNay, who is there that can help you, (even as) an army, besides (Allah) Most Merciful? In nothing but delusion are the Unbelievers.

The agreed readingWho is this army of yours that could help you against the Compassionate? The commentaries agree on the answer the question expects: no protector and no helper exists besides Him. Those who refuse are in nothing but delusion.

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Abu Hurayra used to say, when morning came after it had rained on the people, "We have been rained upon by the rain of Allah's opening," and would then recite the ayat, "Whatever Allah opens to man of His mercy no-one can withhold, and whatever He withholds no-one can send forward after Him. " (Sura 35 ayat)

PickthallOr who is he that will provide for you if He should withhold His providence? Nay, but they are set in pride and frowardness.

Yusuf AliOr who is there that can provide you with Sustenance if He were to withhold His provision? Nay, they obstinately persist in insolent impiety and flight (from the Truth).

PickthallIs he who goeth groping on his face more rightly guided, or he who walketh upright on a straight road?

Yusuf AliIs then one who walks headlong, with his face grovelling, better guided,- or one who walks evenly on a Straight Way?

The agreed readingIs the one who walks fallen on his face better guided, or the one who walks upright on a straight path? The commentaries carry the likeness the same way: the one who refuses and the believer, each on the way he has chosen.

PickthallSay (unto them, O Muhammad): He it is who gave you being, and hath assigned unto you ears and eyes and hearts. Small thanks give ye!

Yusuf AliSay: "It is He Who has created you (and made you grow), and made for you the faculties of hearing, seeing, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give.

The agreed readingSay: it is He who brought you into being and gave you hearing, sight and hearts — and little thanks do you give. The commentaries make one point of the three: they are the organs of knowing, and thanking Him for them is using them for what they were made for.

PickthallSay: He it is Who multiplieth you in the earth, and unto Whom ye will be gathered.

Yusuf AliSay: "It is He Who has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered together."

The agreed readingSay: it is He who scattered you across the earth, and to Him you will be gathered for the reckoning.

Yusuf AliThey ask: When will this promise be (fulfilled)? - If ye are telling the truth.

The agreed readingAnd they say: when will this promise come, if you are truthful? — the resurrection they had been warned of, asked about in mockery.

Yusuf AliSay: "As to the knowledge of the time, it is with Allah alone: I am (sent) only to warn plainly in public."

PickthallSay (O Muhammad): Have ye thought: Whether Allah causeth me (Muhammad) and those with me to perish or hath mercy on us, still, who will protect the disbelievers from a painful doom?

Yusuf AliSay: "See ye?- If Allah were to destroy me, and those with me, or if He bestows His Mercy on us,- yet who can deliver the Unbelievers from a grievous Penalty?"

The agreed readingSay: whether God destroys me and those with me, or has mercy on us — who will shelter those who refuse from a painful punishment? The commentaries read it as one answer to those who waited for the Prophet's death: his fate, either way, gains them nothing.

PickthallSay: He is the Beneficent. In Him we believe and in Him we put our trust. And ye will soon know who it is that is in error manifest.

Yusuf AliSay: "He is (Allah) Most Gracious: We have believed in Him, and on Him have we put our trust: So, soon will ye know which (of us) it is that is in manifest error."

The agreed readingSay: He is the Compassionate. In Him we believe and in Him we put our trust — and you will come to know who is in clear error.

PickthallSay: Have ye thought: If (all) your water were to disappear into the earth, who then could bring you gushing water?

Yusuf AliSay: "See ye?- If your stream be some morning lost (in the underground earth), who then can supply you with clear-flowing water?"

The agreed readingSay: if your water sank away into the earth, who would bring you flowing water? The commentaries close the sura on the same note: the water you draw so easily could vanish past reach, and none but He could return it.

1. We were told by my father, may Allah grant him mercy, that he said: We were told by Sa’d bin Abdullah, that he said: We were told by Ahmad bin Muhammed bin ‘Isa, from Muhammed bin Isma’il bin Bazee’, from Mansur bin Yunus, from an attendant at Abu Hamza, from Abu Hamza, that he said: I said to Abu Ja’far, peace be upon him: The saying of Allah, Exalted is He: «Everything is to perish, except for His Face» (28:88) He said: Everything is to perish and His Face will remain. Indeed, Allah, Exalted and Glorious is He, is Greater than being characterized with a face, however, its meaning is: Everything is to perish, except for His religion and the face from which He is approached.
