31:2#

PickthallThese are revelations of the wise Scripture,

Yusuf AliThese are Verses of the Wise Book,-

The agreed readingThese are the signs of the Book: a Book that carries wisdom, and whose signs are set firm.
31:3#

PickthallA guidance and a mercy for the good,

Yusuf AliA Guide and a Mercy to the Doers of Good,-

The agreed readingA guidance and a mercy for those who do good: a showing of the way, and a favour to those who obey.
31:4#

PickthallThose who establish worship and pay the poor-due and have sure faith in the Hereafter.

Yusuf AliThose who establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity, and have (in their hearts) the assurance of the Hereafter.

The agreed readingThose who establish the prayer, give the zakat, and are certain of the life to come. The three are named out of everything that doing good covers, for the weight that is put on them.
31:5#

PickthallSuch have guidance from their Lord. Such are the successful.

Yusuf AliThese are on (true) guidance from their Lord: and these are the ones who will prosper.

The agreed readingThose are the ones on guidance from their Lord, and those are the ones who succeed, having gathered both the true belief and the deed that goes with it.
31:6#

PickthallAnd of mankind is he who payeth for mere pastime of discourse, that he may mislead from Allah's way without knowledge, and maketh it the butt of mockery. For such there is a shameful doom.

Yusuf AliBut there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.

The agreed readingAnd among people is one who buys the diversion of talk: speech with no root to it, which turns a person from what matters. He does it to lead others off God's road without any knowledge, and to make a mockery of that road. For such there is a punishment that brings them low.
31:7#

PickthallAnd when Our revelations are recited unto him he turneth away in pride as if he heard them not, as if there were a deafness in his ears. So give him tidings of a painful doom.

Yusuf AliWhen Our Signs are rehearsed to such a one, he turns away in arrogance, as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in both his ears: announce to him a grievous Penalty.

The agreed readingAnd when God's signs are recited to him he turns away in pride, as if he had not heard them, as if there were a weight in his ears keeping the sound out. So give him the news of a painful punishment, news given in mockery.
31:8#

PickthallLo! those who believe and do good works, for them are the gardens of delight,

Yusuf AliFor those who believe and work righteous deeds, there will be Gardens of Bliss,-

The agreed readingThose who believe and do what is right will have gardens of delight, where every kind of enjoyment is theirs.
31:9#

PickthallWherein they will abide. It is a promise of Allah in truth. He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Yusuf AliTo dwell therein. The promise of Allah is true: and He is Exalted in Power, Wise.

The agreed readingStaying in them, for their staying is settled from the moment they enter. It is God's promise, and truly given. He is the Mighty, whom nothing overcomes and nothing keeps from carrying out what He has said, and the Wise, who does only what wisdom calls for.
31:10#

PickthallHe hath created the heavens without supports that ye can see, and hath cast into the earth firm hills, so that it quake not with you; and He hath dispersed therein all kinds of beasts. And We send down water from the sky and We cause (plants) of every goodly kind to grow therein.

Yusuf AliHe created the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs.

The agreed readingHe created the heavens with no pillars that you can see, and set firm mountains into the earth so that it should not sway under you, and scattered every kind of creature over it. And God sent water down from the sky and made every generous kind grow in it.
31:11#

PickthallThis is the Creation of Allah. Now show me that which those (ye worship) beside Him have created. Nay, but the wrong-doers are in error manifest!

Yusuf AliSuch is the Creation of Allah: now show Me what is there that others besides Him have created: nay, but the Transgressors are in manifest error.

The agreed readingThis is what God created. Now show me what those you set up besides Him have created. They created nothing. Rather, the wrongdoers are in plain error.
31:12#

PickthallAnd verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.

Yusuf Aliwe bestowed (in the past) Wisdom on Luqman: "Show (thy) gratitude to Allah." Any who is (so) grateful does so to the profit of his own soul: but if any is ungrateful, verily Allah is free of all wants, Worthy of all praise.

The agreed readingAnd God gave Luqman wisdom: understanding, knowledge, and rightness in what he said. Be thankful to God. Whoever gives thanks gives thanks for his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful takes nothing from God, who is Rich and Praiseworthy.
31:13#

PickthallAnd (remember) when Luqman said unto his son, when he was exhorting him: O my dear son! Ascribe no partners unto Allah. Lo! to ascribe partners (unto Him) is a tremendous wrong -

Yusuf AliBehold, Luqman said to his son by way of instruction: "O my son! join not in worship (others) with Allah: for false worship is indeed the highest wrong-doing."

The agreed readingAnd when Luqman said to his son, counselling him, and the word he uses for son is a diminutive of tenderness: my son, do not set up partners with God. Setting up partners is a great wrong, for it levels the One from whom every favour comes with what gives no favour at all.
31:14#

PickthallAnd We have enjoined upon man concerning his partners - His mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - Give thanks unto Me and unto thy parents. Unto Me is the journeying.

Yusuf AliAnd We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.

The agreed readingAnd God charged the human being concerning his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, her weakness doubling as she went, and his weaning comes at the end of two years, through which she nursed him. Be thankful to Me and to your parents. To Me is the coming home.
31:15#

PickthallBut if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who repenteth unto Me. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do -

Yusuf Ali"But if they strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration), and follow the way of those who turn to me (in love): in the end the return of you all is to Me, and I will tell you the truth (and meaning) of all that ye did."

The agreed readingBut if they press you to set up with God what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them in that. And keep company with them in this world in the way that is right, with kindness and with the tie kept unbroken, and follow the way of one who turns back to God. Then to God is your return, and He will tell you what you were doing.
31:16#

PickthallO my dear son! Lo! though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware.

Yusuf Ali"O my son!" (said Luqman), "If there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them).

The agreed readingMy son, if a deed be no more than the weight of a mustard seed, and it be hidden inside a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God will bring it out. God is Subtle, reaching what is finest, and Aware.
31:17#

PickthallO my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things.

Yusuf Ali"O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs.

The agreed readingMy son, establish the prayer, and command what is right and forbid what is wrong, and be patient under whatever comes to you for doing so, the hardship and the hurt that commanding and forbidding bring. That is among the things a person must hold firm to.
31:18#

PickthallTurn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk, nor walk with pertness in the land. Lo! Allah loveth not each braggart boaster.

Yusuf Ali"And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster.

The agreed readingAnd do not turn your face away from people out of pride, or turn from someone speaking to you as though he were of no account. And do not walk the earth full of yourself. God does not love anyone who struts and boasts.
31:19#

PickthallBe modest in thy bearing and subdue thy voice. Lo! the harshest of all voices is the voice of the ass.

Yusuf Ali"And be moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass."

The agreed readingAnd keep to the middle in your walking, between crawling and hurrying, with tranquillity and dignity about you. And lower your voice. The harshest of all voices is the voice of the donkey.
31:20#

PickthallSee ye not how Allah hath made serviceable unto you whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth and hath loaded you with His favours both without and within? Yet of mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light.

Yusuf AliDo ye not see that Allah has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made his bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen? Yet there are among men those who dispute about Allah, without knowledge and without guidance, and without a Book to enlighten them!

The agreed readingHave you not seen that God made serviceable to you what is in the heavens, the sun and the moon and the stars, made causes of your benefit, and what is in the earth, giving you the power to use it? And He poured His favours on you, outward and inward, the ones you can feel and the ones you can only understand. And among people is one who argues about God with no knowledge, no guidance and no Book to light his way.
31:21#

PickthallAnd if it be said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: Nay, but we follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though the devil were inviting them unto the doom of flame?

Yusuf AliWhen they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: "Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following). "What! even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the (Blazing) Fire?

The agreed readingAnd when they are told to follow what God has sent down, they say: no, we follow what we found our fathers on. Even if Satan was calling them to the punishment of the Blaze?
31:22#

PickthallWhosoever surrendereth his purpose to Allah while doing good, he verily hath grasped the firm hand-hold. Unto Allah belongeth the sequel of all things.

Yusuf AliWhoever submits his whole self to Allah, and is a doer of good, has grasped indeed the most trustworthy hand-hold: and with Allah rests the End and Decision of (all) affairs.

The agreed readingAnd whoever surrenders his whole face to God, turning to His obedience, doing what his Lord commanded and keeping clear of what He forbade, has taken hold of the firmest handhold there is. And to God every matter comes home.
31:23#

PickthallAnd whosoever disbelieveth, let not his disbelief afflict thee (O Muhammad). Unto Us is their return, and We shall tell them what they did. Lo! Allah is Aware of what is in the breasts (of men).

Yusuf AliBut if any reject Faith, let not his rejection grieve thee: to Us is their return, and We shall tell them the truth of their deeds: for Allah knows well all that is in (men's) hearts.

The agreed readingAnd whoever refuses, do not let his refusal grieve you or weigh on you. To God is their return, and He will tell them what they did. God knows what is inside the breasts.
31:24#

PickthallWe give them comfort for a little, and then We drive them to a heavy doom.

Yusuf AliWe grant them their pleasure for a little while: in the end shall We drive them to a chastisement unrelenting.

The agreed readingGod lets them enjoy themselves a little, for the days of their lives, and then drives them to a punishment that is heavy, the punishment of the Fire.
31:25#

PickthallIf thou shouldst ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth? they would answer: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most of them know not.

Yusuf AliIf thou ask them, who it is that created the heavens and the earth. They will certainly say, "Allah". Say: "Praise be to Allah!" But most of them understand not.

The agreed readingAnd if you asked them who created the heavens and the earth, they would say: God. The proof is plain enough that they cannot answer otherwise. Say: praise belongs to God. But most of them do not know.
31:26#

PickthallUnto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. Lo! Allah, He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.

Yusuf AliTo Allah belong all things in heaven and earth: verily Allah is He (that is) free of all wants, worthy of all praise.

The agreed readingTo God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, His by creation and by ownership, so that no one else in them deserves to be worshipped. God is the Rich, who has no need of anyone's praise, and the Praiseworthy, who deserves praise whether He is praised or not.
31:27#

PickthallAnd if all the trees in the earth were pens, and the sea, with seven more seas to help it, (were ink), the words of Allah could not be exhausted. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Yusuf AliAnd if all the trees on earth were pens and the ocean (were ink), with seven oceans behind it to add to its (supply), yet would not the words of Allah be exhausted (in the writing): for Allah is Exalted in Power, full of Wisdom.

The agreed readingAnd if every tree in the earth were made into pens, and the sea were ink with seven more seas after it to keep it supplied, God's words would still not run out. God is Mighty, Wise.
31:28#

PickthallYour creation and your raising (from the dead) are only as (the creation and the raising of) a single soul. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.

Yusuf AliAnd your creation or your resurrection is in no wise but as an individual soul: for Allah is He Who hears and sees (all things).

The agreed readingYour creation and your raising are, to God, only as the creation and the raising of a single soul, for it is by the word be, and it is. God is Hearing, who hears all there is to hear, and Seeing, who sees all there is to see.
31:29#

PickthallHast thou not seen how Allah causeth the night to pass into the day and causeth the day to pass into the night, and hath subdued the sun and the moon (to do their work), each running unto an appointed term; and that Allah is Informed of what ye do?

Yusuf AliSeest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and he merges Day into Night; that He has subjected the sun, and the moon (to his Law), each running its course for a term appointed; and that Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do?

The agreed readingHave you not seen that God makes the night pass into the day and the day into the night, what is taken from the one being added to the other, and that He set the sun and the moon to serve, each running to a term He has named? And God is aware of what you do.
31:30#

PickthallThat (is so) because Allah, He is the True, and that which they invoke beside Him is the False, and because Allah, He is the Sublime, the Great.

Yusuf AliThat is because Allah is the (only) Reality, and because whatever else they invoke besides Him is Falsehood; and because Allah,- He is the Most High, Most Great.

The agreed readingThat is because God is the Truth, the one that stands firm, and what they call on besides Him is the false, the thing that passes away. And because God is the High, the Great.
31:31#

PickthallHast thou not seen how the ships glide on the sea by Allah's grace, that He may show you of His wonders? Lo! therein indeed are portents for every steadfast, grateful (heart).

Yusuf AliSeest thou not that the ships sail through the ocean by the Grace of Allah?- that He may show you of His Signs? Verily in this are Signs for all who constantly persevere and give thanks.

The agreed readingHave you not seen that the ships run on the sea by God's favour, carried by the wind and the water He made for it, so that He may show you something of His signs? In that there are signs for everyone much given to patience and much given to thanks.
31:32#

PickthallAnd if a wave enshroudeth them like awnings, they cry unto Allah, making their faith pure for Him only. But when He bringeth them safe to land, some of them compromise. None denieth Our signs save every traitor ingrate.

Yusuf AliWhen a wave covers them like the canopy (of clouds), they call to Allah, offering Him sincere devotion. But when He has delivered them safely to land, there are among them those that halt between (right and wrong). But none reject Our Signs except only a perfidious ungrateful (wretch)!

The agreed readingAnd when a wave covers them over like great canopies of cloud, they call on God, making their calling on Him sincerely His alone. Then when He brings them safe to land, some of them go only halfway. And no one denies God's signs except one who breaks faith and is ungrateful.
31:33#

PickthallO mankind! Keep your duty to your Lord and fear a Day when the parent will not be able to avail the child in aught, nor the child to avail the parent. Lo! Allah's promise is the very truth. Let not the life of the world beguile you, nor let the deceiver beguile you, in regard to Allah.

Yusuf AliO mankind! do your duty to your Lord, and fear (the coming of) a Day when no father can avail aught for his son, nor a son avail aught for his father. Verily, the promise of Allah is true: let not then this present life deceive you, nor let the chief Deceiver deceive you about Allah.

The agreed readingPeople, be mindful of your Lord, and fear a Day on which no parent will be of any use to his child and no child of any use to his parent, not even were the parent to offer himself in his child's place. God's promise is true. So do not let the life of this world deceive you, and do not let the deceiver deceive you about God.
31:34#

PickthallLo! Allah! With Him is knowledge of the Hour. He sendeth down the rain, and knoweth that which is in the wombs. No soul knoweth what it will earn to-morrow, and no soul knoweth in what land it will die. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.

Yusuf AliVerily the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone). It is He Who sends down rain, and He Who knows what is in the wombs. Nor does any one know what it is that he will earn on the morrow: Nor does any one know in what land he is to die. Verily with Allah is full knowledge and He is acquainted (with all things).

The agreed readingWith God is the knowledge of the Hour, of when it will rise. He sends the rain down at a time He alone knows, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. God is Knowing, Aware.
