Surah 22 of 114 · Madani · 78 ayat

Al-Hajj الحج

The Pilgrimage

22:1#

PickthallO mankind! Fear your Lord. Lo! the earthquake of the Hour (of Doom) is a tremendous thing.

Yusuf AliO mankind! fear your Lord! for the convulsion of the Hour (of Judgment) will be a thing terrible!

The agreed readingPeople: be mindful of your Lord. The quaking that comes with the Hour is a tremendous thing. The address is to all people together and not to one group among them.
22:2#

PickthallOn the day when ye behold it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will be delivered of her burden, and thou (Muhammad) wilt see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but the Doom of Allah will be strong (upon them).

Yusuf AliThe Day ye shall see it, every mother giving suck shall forget her suckling-babe, and every pregnant female shall drop her load (unformed): thou shalt see mankind as in a drunken riot, yet not drunk: but dreadful will be the Wrath of Allah.

The agreed readingOn the day you see it, a nursing mother forgets the child at her breast and a pregnant woman puts down what she is carrying. You will see people as though they were drunk, and they are not drunk: what has taken hold of them is the severity of God's punishment.
22:3#

PickthallAmong mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge, and followeth each froward devil;

Yusuf AliAnd yet among men there are such as dispute about Allah, without knowledge, and follow every evil one obstinate in rebellion!

The agreed readingAmong people is one who disputes about God without knowledge and follows every rebellious satan. The commentaries give the occasion together: it came down about a practised arguer of Mecca who said the angels were God's daughters and the Qur'an old tales, and who denied that anyone is raised after death. The words take in him and everyone like him.
22:4#

PickthallFor him it is decreed that whoso taketh him for friend, he verily will mislead him and will guide him to the punishment of the Flame.

Yusuf AliAbout the (Evil One) it is decreed that whoever turns to him for friendship, him will he lead astray, and he will guide him to the Penalty of the Fire.

The agreed readingIt stands decreed of that satan that whoever takes him for a patron will be led astray by him and led to the punishment of the Blaze. Leading astray is what he is made for; the Blaze is where the leading ends.
22:5#

PickthallO mankind! if ye are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then lo! We have created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh shapely and shapeless, that We may make (it) clear for you. And We cause what We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed time, and afterward We bring you forth as infants, then (give you growth) that ye attain your full strength. And among you there is he who dieth (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the most abject time of life, so that, after knowledge, he knoweth naught. And thou (Muhammad) seest the earth barren, but when We send down water thereon, it doth thrill and swell and put forth every lovely kind (of growth).

Yusuf AliO mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (our power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babes, then (foster you) that ye may reach your age of full strength; and some of you are called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they know nothing after having known (much), and (further), thou seest the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs).

The agreed readingIf they doubt that anyone is raised, the answer is set out as a thing they have already watched happen: dust, then a drop, then a clinging clot, then a lump formed and unformed. What is willed stays in the womb for its term and comes out an infant, then grows to full strength; some are taken early and some are left to the age at which what they knew drains away. And the earth lies dead until water comes down on it, and then it stirs and swells and puts out every lovely kind. The first beginning is the proof of the second.
22:6#

PickthallThat is because Allah, He is the Truth and because He quickeneth the dead, and because He is Able to do all things;

Yusuf AliThis is so, because Allah is the Reality: it is He Who gives life to the dead, and it is He Who has power over all things.

The agreed readingAll of that is because God is the Truth - the one that holds and does not pass - and because He is the one who gives life to the dead, and because His power reaches everything.
22:7#

PickthallAnd because the Hour will come, there is no doubt thereof; and because Allah will raise those who are in the graves.

Yusuf AliAnd verily the Hour will come: there can be no doubt about it, or about (the fact) that Allah will raise up all who are in the graves.

The agreed readingAnd because the Hour is coming with no doubt in it, and because God will raise whoever is in the graves. What settles it is that He has promised it.
22:8#

PickthallAnd among mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light,

Yusuf AliYet there is among men such a one as disputes about Allah, without Knowledge, without Guidance, and without a Book of Enlightenment,-

The agreed readingAnd among people is one who disputes about God with nothing behind him: no knowledge, no guidance he was given, and no book with any light in it.
22:9#

PickthallTurning away in pride to beguile (men) from the way of Allah. For him in this world is ignominy, and on the Day of Resurrection We make him taste the doom of burning.

Yusuf Ali(Disdainfully) bending his side, in order to lead (men) astray from the Path of Allah: for him there is disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Judgment We shall make him taste the Penalty of burning (Fire).

The agreed readingHe turns his side away in pride, to lead others off God's path. For him there is disgrace in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be made to taste the punishment of burning.
22:10#

Pickthall(And unto him it will be said): This is for that which thy two hands have sent before, and because Allah is no oppressor of His slaves.

Yusuf Ali(It will be said): "This is because of the deeds which thy hands sent forth, for verily Allah is not unjust to His servants.

The agreed readingThat is for what your own hands sent on ahead - the hands are named because most of what a person does is done with them - and God does no wrong to His servants: no one is punished for what he did not do.
22:11#

PickthallAnd among mankind is he who worshippeth Allah upon a narrow marge so that if good befalleth him he is content therewith, but if a trial befalleth him, he falleth away utterly. He loseth both the world and the Hereafter. That is the sheer loss.

Yusuf AliThere are among men some who serve Allah, as it were, on the verge: if good befalls them, they are, therewith, well content; but if a trial comes to them, they turn on their faces: they lose both this world and the Hereafter: that is loss for all to see!

The agreed readingAnd among people is one who worships God on an edge, with no footing under him. If good comes to him he settles; if a trial comes - fitna here in the sense of an affliction that tests him - he turns right round and goes back the way he came. He has lost this world and the next together, and that is loss with nothing hidden about it.
22:12#

PickthallHe calleth, beside Allah, unto that which hurteth him not nor benefiteth him. That is the far error.

Yusuf AliThey call on such deities, besides Allah, as can neither hurt nor profit them: that is straying far indeed (from the Way)!

The agreed readingHe calls on something other than God that cannot hurt him if he leaves it and cannot help him if he serves it. That is error gone far from the truth.
22:13#

PickthallHe calleth unto him whose harm is nearer than his benefit; verily an evil patron and verily an evil friend!

Yusuf Ali(Perhaps) they call on one whose hurt is nearer than his profit: evil, indeed, is the patron, and evil the companion (or help)!

The agreed readingHe calls on a thing whose harm is nearer to him than any good of it - the harm is real and the benefit only imagined. An evil patron, the commentaries say, and an evil companion.
22:14#

PickthallLo! Allah causeth those who believe and do good works to enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow. Lo! Allah doth what He intendeth.

Yusuf AliVerily Allah will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds, to Gardens, beneath which rivers flow: for Allah carries out all that He plans.

The agreed readingThose who believe and do what is right are brought into Gardens with rivers running beneath them. God does what He intends, and nothing stands between His intending it and its happening.
22:15#

PickthallWhoso is wont to think (through envy) that Allah will not give him (Muhammad) victory in the world and the Hereafter (and is enraged at the thought of his victory), let him stretch a rope up to the roof (of his dwelling), and let him hang himself. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth!.

Yusuf AliIf any think that Allah will not help him (His Messenger) in this world and the Hereafter, let him stretch out a rope to the ceiling and cut (himself) off: then let him see whether his plan will remove that which enrages (him)!

The agreed readingWhoever supposes that God will not help His messenger in this world and the next - let him stretch a rope to the roof and make an end of himself, and then see whether his scheme has taken away the thing that enrages him. The help comes either way; the rage is his own to carry.
22:16#

PickthallThus We reveal it as plain revelations, and verily Allah guideth whom He will.

Yusuf AliThus have We sent down Clear Signs; and verily Allah doth guide whom He will!

The agreed readingAnd in that manner the whole of it was sent down: clear signs, plain on the face of them. And God guides whom He wills to guide.
22:17#

PickthallLo! those who believe (this revelation), and those who are Jews, and the Sabaeans and the Christians and the Magians and the idolaters - Lo! Allah will decide between them on the Day of Resurrection. Lo! Allah is Witness over all things.

Yusuf AliThose who believe (in the Qur'an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians, Christians, Magians, and Polytheists,- Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment: for Allah is witness of all things.

The agreed readingThose who believe, and the Jews, and the Sabaeans, and the Christians, and the Magians, and those who set up partners with God - God will decide between them all on the Day of Resurrection, setting the one who was right apart from the one who was wrong. He is a witness over everything.
22:18#

PickthallHast thou not seen that unto Allah payeth adoration whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the hills, and the trees, and the beasts, and many of mankind, while there are many unto whom the doom is justly due. He whom Allah scorneth, there is none to give him honour. Lo! Allah doeth what He will.

Yusuf AliSeest thou not that to Allah bow down in worship all things that are in the heavens and on earth,- the sun, the moon, the stars; the hills, the trees, the animals; and a great number among mankind? But a great number are (also) such as are fit for Punishment: and such as Allah shall disgrace,- None can raise to honour: for Allah carries out all that He wills.

The agreed readingEverything in the heavens and the earth bows to God - the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the animals - each in the way that is asked of it. Many of the people bow too, and add to it the bowing of the prayer; and there are many on whom the punishment has fallen due. Whoever God leaves without honour has no one who can give it to him.
22:19#

PickthallThese twain (the believers and the disbelievers) are two opponents who contend concerning their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads,

Yusuf AliThese two antagonists dispute with each other about their Lord: But those who deny (their Lord),- for them will be cut out a garment of Fire: over their heads will be poured out boiling water.

The agreed readingThese are two sides in a dispute about their Lord: those who believe on the one side, and the rest on the other, however many groups the rest divide into. For those who refuse, garments of fire are cut to their measure, and boiling water is poured over their heads.
22:20#

PickthallWhereby that which is in their bellies, and their skins too, will be melted;

Yusuf AliWith it will be scalded what is within their bodies, as well as (their) skins.

The agreed readingWith it what is inside them is melted as well as what is outside: the heat works on their insides as it works on their skin.
22:21#

PickthallAnd for them are hooked rods of iron.

Yusuf AliIn addition there will be maces of iron (to punish) them.

The agreed readingAnd there are maces of iron for them, to strike their heads with. The commentaries carry a report of the weight of them: if one were set down on the earth, all of mankind and the jinn together could not lift it.
22:22#

PickthallWhenever, in their anguish, they would go forth from thence they are driven back therein and (it is said unto them): Taste the doom of burning.

Yusuf AliEvery time they wish to get away therefrom, from anguish, they will be forced back therein, and (it will be said), "Taste ye the Penalty of Burning!"

The agreed readingEvery time the anguish makes them try to climb out of it, they are driven back in, and told: taste the punishment of burning.
22:23#

PickthallLo! Allah will cause those who believe and do good works to enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will be allowed armlets of gold, and pearls, and their raiment therein will be silk.

Yusuf AliAllah will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which rivers flow: they shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk.

The agreed readingThose who believe and do what is right are brought into Gardens with rivers running beneath them. There they are given bracelets of gold and pearl, and what they wear is silk - the very thing that was forbidden to the men among them in this life.
22:24#

PickthallThey are guided unto gentle speech; they are guided unto the path of the Glorious One.

Yusuf AliFor they have been guided (in this life) to the purest of speeches; they have been guided to the Path of Him Who is Worthy of (all) Praise.

The agreed readingThey were guided to the good word - the commentaries take it as the word that there is no god but God - and guided to the path of the One who is praised.
22:25#

PickthallLo! those who disbelieve and bar (men) from the way of Allah and from the Inviolable Place of Worship, which We have appointed for mankind together, the dweller therein and the nomad: whosoever seeketh wrongful partiality therein, him We shall cause to taste a painful doom.

Yusuf AliAs to those who have rejected (Allah), and would keep back (men) from the Way of Allah, and from the Sacred Mosque, which We have made (open) to (all) men - equal is the dweller there and the visitor from the country - and any whose purpose therein is profanity or wrong-doing - them will We cause to taste of a most Grievous Penalty.

The agreed readingThose who refuse, and who block others from God's way and from the Sacred Mosque - which was made for all people alike, the one settled there and the one who comes in from outside - and whoever means to turn aside in it and do wrong there: he will be made to taste a painful punishment.
22:26#

PickthallAnd (remember) when We prepared for Abraham the place of the (holy) House, saying: Ascribe thou no thing as partner unto Me, and purify My House for those who make the round (thereof) and those who stand and those who bow and make prostration.

Yusuf AliBehold! We gave the site, to Abraham, of the (Sacred) House, (saying): "Associate not anything (in worship) with Me; and sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or stand up, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).

The agreed readingAnd when the place of the House was shown to Abraham so that he could build it: set up nothing as a partner with Me, and keep My House clean for those who go round it and those who stand and bow and prostrate there.
22:27#

PickthallAnd proclaim unto mankind the pilgrimage. They will come unto thee on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every deep ravine,

Yusuf Ali"And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways;

The agreed readingAnd call the people to the pilgrimage. They will come to you on foot and on every lean beast, out of every deep mountain pass, from wherever they are.
22:28#

PickthallThat they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate.

Yusuf Ali"That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want.

The agreed readingSo that they may be present for what benefits them - the commentaries take the benefit as of this world and the next together - and so that they may mention God's name over the animals He has provided them, on the days appointed for it. Then they are to eat of them and feed the poor who are in want.
22:29#

PickthallThen let them make an end of their unkemptness and pay their vows and go around the ancient House.

Yusuf Ali"Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform their vows, and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House."

The agreed readingThen let them put off the unkemptness the pilgrim has been carrying - the hair, the nails, the dirt of the road - and let them fulfil what they vowed, and go round the Ancient House.
22:30#

PickthallThat (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the sacred things of Allah, it will be well for him in the sight of his Lord. The cattle are lawful unto you save that which hath been told you. So shun the filth of idols, and shun lying speech,

Yusuf AliSuch (is the Pilgrimage): whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, for him it is good in the Sight of his Lord. Lawful to you (for food in Pilgrimage) are cattle, except those mentioned to you (as exception): but shun the abomination of idols, and shun the word that is false,-

The agreed readingThat is the command. Whoever holds in honour what God has made inviolable will find it better for him with his Lord. The cattle are lawful to you apart from what has already been named to you as forbidden. So keep clear of the filth of idols, and keep clear of false speech.
22:31#

PickthallTurning unto Allah (only), not ascribing partners unto Him; for whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and the birds had snatched him or the wind had blown him to a far-off place.

Yusuf AliBeing true in faith to Allah, and never assigning partners to Him: if anyone assigns partners to Allah, is as if he had fallen from heaven and been snatched up by birds, or the wind had swooped (like a bird on its prey) and thrown him into a far-distant place.

The agreed readingTurning away from everything else towards the one God, setting up no partner with Him. Whoever does set up a partner with God is like a man who has fallen out of the sky, whom the birds snatch up or the wind carries off to some far place.
22:32#

PickthallThat (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the offerings consecrated to Allah, it surely is from devotion of the hearts,

Yusuf AliSuch (is his state): and whoever holds in honour the symbols of Allah, (in the sacrifice of animals), such (honour) should come truly from piety of heart.

The agreed readingWhoever holds in honour the markers God has set - and the commentaries name among them the animals brought for sacrifice, chosen well and kept well - is showing something that comes from the mindfulness of God in the heart, and not from the act on its own.
22:33#

PickthallTherein are benefits for you for an appointed term; and afterward they are brought for sacrifice unto the ancient House.

Yusuf AliIn them ye have benefits for a term appointed: in the end their place of sacrifice is near the Ancient House.

The agreed readingThere are uses in them for you until the appointed time, and the commentaries agree on where the use stops: ride the animal if you need to, without being hard on it, and take its milk without draining it. Then the place where its slaughter becomes lawful is at the Ancient House.
22:34#

PickthallAnd for every nation have We appointed a ritual, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He hath given them for food; and your god is One God, therefor surrender unto Him. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the humble,

Yusuf AliTo every people did We appoint rites (of sacrifice), that they might celebrate the name of Allah over the sustenance He gave them from animals (fit for food). But your god is One God: submit then your wills to Him (in Islam): and give thou the good news to those who humble themselves,-

The agreed readingFor every community that went before, a rite of sacrifice was appointed, so that they would mention God's name over the animals He had provided them. Your God is one God: submit to Him. And give good news to the humble, those who have been brought low before God.
22:35#

PickthallWhose hearts fear when Allah is mentioned, and the patient of whatever may befall them, and those who establish worship and who spend of that We have bestowed on them.

Yusuf AliTo those whose hearts when Allah is mentioned, are filled with fear, who show patient perseverance over their afflictions, keep up regular prayer, and spend (in charity) out of what We have bestowed upon them.

The agreed readingThey are the ones whose hearts stir with awe when God is mentioned, who are patient under whatever comes upon them, who establish the prayer at its times, and who spend from what they have been given.
22:36#

PickthallAnd the camels! We have appointed them among the ceremonies of Allah. Therein ye have much good. So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines. Then when their flanks fall (dead), eat thereof and feed the beggar and the suppliant. Thus have We made them subject unto you, that haply ye may give thanks.

Yusuf AliThe sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that ye may be grateful.

The agreed readingThe sacrificial camels are among the markers God has set for you, and there is good for you in them. Mention God's name over them as they stand in line - the commentaries describe the same posture, the animal standing with its forelegs bound. When their sides have gone down, eat of them, and feed the poor man who keeps quiet about his need and the one who comes and asks. They were made subject to you so that you would be thankful.
22:37#

PickthallTheir flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good.

Yusuf AliIt is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah: it is your piety that reaches Him: He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify Allah for His Guidance to you and proclaim the good news to all who do right.

The agreed readingNeither the flesh nor the blood reaches God. What reaches Him from you is the mindfulness of God behind the act. They were made subject to you so that you would magnify God for having guided you. And give good news to those who do good.
22:38#

PickthallLo! Allah defendeth those who are true. Lo! Allah loveth not each treacherous ingrate.

Yusuf AliVerily Allah will defend (from ill) those who believe: verily, Allah loveth not any that is a traitor to faith, or show ingratitude.

The agreed readingGod defends those who believe. He does not love anyone who betrays a trust and is ungrateful for what he was given.
22:39#

PickthallSanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory;

Yusuf AliTo those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged;- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid;-

The agreed readingPermission to fight is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged - the commentaries mark this as the first āyah to come down on the matter. And God is well able to help them.
22:40#

PickthallThose who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: Our Lord is Allah - For had it not been for Allah's repelling some men by means of others, cloisters and churches and oratories and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft mentioned, would assuredly have been pulled down. Verily Allah helpeth one who helpeth Him. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty -

Yusuf Ali(They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right,- (for no cause) except that they say, "our Lord is Allah". Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause);- for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will).

The agreed readingThey were driven out of their homes for no reason except that they said: our Lord is God - and that is no reason at all. Were it not that God holds some people back by means of others, the places where God's name is much mentioned would have been pulled down: monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques alike. God helps whoever helps His cause; He is strong and mighty.
22:41#

PickthallThose who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel of events.

Yusuf Ali(They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs.

The agreed readingThey are the ones who, if they are given power in the land, establish the prayer, give the zakat, call for what is right and forbid what is wrong. And how affairs end belongs to God.
22:42#

PickthallIf they deny thee (Muhammad), even so the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, before thee, denied (Our messengers);

Yusuf AliIf they treat thy (mission) as false, so did the peoples before them (with their prophets),- the People of Noah, and 'Ad and Thamud;

The agreed readingIf they call Muhammad a liar, the people of Noah did the same before them, and Ad, who were Hud's people, and Thamud, who were Salih's. It is said to settle him.
22:43#

PickthallAnd the folk of Abraham and the folk of Lot;

Yusuf AliThose of Abraham and Lut;

The agreed readingAnd the people of Abraham did the same, and the people of Lot: the list is of peoples who each had a messenger among them and each called him a liar.
22:44#

Pickthall(And) the dwellers in Midian. And Moses was denied; but I indulged the disbelievers a long while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My abhorrence!

Yusuf AliAnd the Companions of the Madyan People; and Moses was rejected (in the same way). But I granted respite to the Unbelievers, and (only) after that did I punish them: but how (terrible) was my rejection (of them)!

The agreed readingAnd the people of Midian, who were Shuayb's people. And Moses was called a liar too - the wording shifts there, because it was not his own people who denied him. Those who refused were given a long rein, and then they were seized; and how terrible was My rejection of them.
22:45#

PickthallHow many a township have We destroyed while it was sinful, so that it lieth (to this day) in ruins, and (how many) a deserted well and lofty tower!

Yusuf AliHow many populations have We destroyed, which were given to wrong-doing? They tumbled down on their roofs. And how many wells are lying idle and neglected, and castles lofty and well-built?

The agreed readingHow many a town was destroyed while its people were doing wrong, so that its walls now lie fallen in upon its roofs. And how many a well left standing with no one to draw from it, and a high castle emptied of the people who raised it.
22:46#

PickthallHave they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind.

Yusuf AliDo they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

The agreed readingHave they not travelled in the land, so as to have hearts that understand what they see and ears that hear what they are told? What ruined the peoples before them is standing there to be looked at. It is not the eyes that go blind; it is the hearts inside the chests.
22:47#

PickthallAnd they will bid thee hasten on the Doom, and Allah faileth not His promise, but lo! a Day with Allah is as a thousand years of what ye reckon.

Yusuf AliYet they ask thee to hasten on the Punishment! But Allah will not fail in His Promise. Verily a Day in the sight of thy Lord is like a thousand years of your reckoning.

The agreed readingThey press for the punishment to be brought forward. God does not break a promise, and it is coming. But a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of the counting they use.
22:48#

PickthallAnd how many a township did I suffer long though it was sinful! Then I grasped it. Unto Me is the return.

Yusuf AliAnd to how many populations did I give respite, which were given to wrong-doing? in the end I punished them. To me is the destination (of all).

The agreed readingAnd how many a town was given a long rein while it was doing wrong, and then was seized. The return, in the end, is to God.
22:49#

PickthallSay: O mankind! I am only a plain warner unto you.

Yusuf AliSay: "O men! I am (sent) to you only to give a Clear Warning:

The agreed readingSay: people, I am nothing to you but a plain warner. The warning is clear, and warning is what I was sent with - and good news, for those who believe.
22:50#

PickthallThose who believe and do good works, for them is pardon and a rich provision;

Yusuf Ali"Those who believe and work righteousness, for them is forgiveness and a sustenance most generous.

The agreed readingThose who believe and do what is right have forgiveness for what they did wrong and a generous provision; the commentaries name that provision as the Garden.
22:51#

PickthallWhile those who strive to thwart Our revelations, such are rightful owners of the Fire.

Yusuf Ali"But those who strive against Our Signs, to frustrate them,- they will be Companions of the Fire."

The agreed readingAnd those who work against God's signs, meaning to break their force and to get out ahead of them - they are the companions of the Fierce Fire.
22:52#

PickthallNever sent We a messenger or a prophet before thee but when He recited (the message) Satan proposed (opposition) in respect of that which he recited thereof. But Allah abolisheth that which Satan proposeth. Then Allah establisheth His revelations. Allah is Knower, Wise;

Yusuf AliNever did We send a messenger or a prophet before thee, but, when he framed a desire, Satan threw some (vanity) into his desire: but Allah will cancel anything (vain) that Satan throws in, and Allah will confirm (and establish) His Signs: for Allah is full of Knowledge and Wisdom:

The agreed readingNo messenger and no prophet was sent before Muhammad but that, when he recited what he had been given, Satan cast something into the recitation. God then wipes out what Satan cast and sets His own signs firm in its place. He knows what is being done and is wise in how He deals with it.
22:53#

PickthallThat He may make that which the devil proposeth a temptation for those in whose hearts is a disease, and those whose hearts are hardened - Lo! the evil-doers are in open schism -

Yusuf AliThat He may make the suggestions thrown in by Satan, but a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and who are hardened of heart: verily the wrong-doers are in a schism far (from the Truth):

The agreed readingWhat Satan casts is left standing just long enough to become a trial - fitna here in the sense of an affliction that sorts people out - for those with a sickness in their hearts and those whose hearts have gone hard. The wrongdoers are in a split that has carried them far off.
22:54#

PickthallAnd that those who have been given knowledge may know that it is the truth from thy Lord, so that they may believe therein and their hearts may submit humbly unto Him. Lo! Allah verily is guiding those who believe unto a right path.

Yusuf AliAnd that those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may learn that the (Qur'an) is the Truth from thy Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may be made humbly (open) to it: for verily Allah is the Guide of those who believe, to the Straight Way.

The agreed readingAnd so that those who were given knowledge would recognise it as the truth from their Lord, and believe in it, and let their hearts come to rest in it. God guides those who believe to a straight path.
22:55#

PickthallAnd those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt thereof until the Hour come upon them unawares, or there come unto them the doom of a disastrous day.

Yusuf AliThose who reject Faith will not cease to be in doubt concerning (Revelation) until the Hour (of Judgment) comes suddenly upon them, or there comes to them the Penalty of a Day of Disaster.

The agreed readingThose who refuse will not stop doubting it until the Hour comes on them all at once, or the punishment of a barren day arrives - a day, as the commentaries put it, that has no like among days.
22:56#

PickthallThe Sovereignty on that day will be Allah's, He will judge between them. Then those who believed and did good works will be in Gardens of Delight,

Yusuf AliOn that Day of Dominion will be that of Allah: He will judge between them: so those who believe and work righteous deeds will be in Gardens of Delight.

The agreed readingOn that day the kingdom belongs to God alone, and He judges between them. Those who believed and did what is right are in the Gardens of delight.
22:57#

PickthallWhile those who disbelieved and denied Our revelations, for them will be a shameful doom.

Yusuf AliAnd for those who reject Faith and deny our Signs, there will be a humiliating Punishment.

The agreed readingAnd those who refused and called God's signs a lie have a punishment that shames them.
22:58#

PickthallThose who fled their homes for the cause of Allah and then were slain or died, Allah verily will provide for them a good provision. Lo! Allah, He verily is Best of all who make provision.

Yusuf AliThose who leave their homes in the cause of Allah, and are then slain or die,- On them will Allah bestow verily a goodly Provision: Truly Allah is He Who bestows the best provision.

The agreed readingThose who left their homes for God's sake and were then killed or died of themselves - God will provide for them a good provision, which the commentaries name as the provision of the Garden. God is the best of providers.
22:59#

PickthallAssuredly He will cause them to enter by an entry that they will love. Lo! Allah verily is Knower, Indulgent.

Yusuf AliVerily He will admit them to a place with which they shall be well pleased: for Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.

The agreed readingHe will bring them in by a way they will be well pleased with. He knows what they intended, and He is slow to punish.
22:60#

PickthallThat (is so). And whoso hath retaliated with the like of that which he was made to suffer and then hath (again) been wronged, Allah will succour him. Lo! Allah verily is Mild, Forgiving.

Yusuf AliThat (is so). And if one has retaliated to no greater extent than the injury he received, and is again set upon inordinately, Allah will help him: for Allah is One that blots out (sins) and forgives (again and again).

The agreed readingWhoever answers a wrong with the like of it and no more, and is then wronged again, will certainly be helped by God. And God pardons much and forgives.
22:61#

PickthallThat is because Allah maketh the night to pass into the day and maketh the day to pass into the night, and because Allah is Hearer, Seer.

Yusuf AliThat is because Allah merges night into day, and He merges day into night, and verily it is Allah Who hears and sees (all things).

The agreed readingThat is because God is the one who slides the night into the day and the day into the night. The power that turns one of them into the other is the power the help comes from. And God hears what is said and sees what is done.
22:62#

PickthallThat is because Allah, He is the True, and that whereon they call instead of Him, it is the false, and because Allah, He is the High, the Great.

Yusuf AliThat is because Allah - He is the Reality; and those besides Him whom they invoke,- they are but vain Falsehood: verily Allah is He, Most High, Most Great.

The agreed readingThat is because God is the Truth, the thing that holds, and what they call on instead of Him is falsehood, the thing that passes. And God is the High, the Great: nothing stands above Him and nothing is greater.

PickthallSeest thou not how Allah sendeth down water from the sky and then the earth becometh green upon the morrow? Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware.

Yusuf AliSeest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and forthwith the earth becomes clothed with green? for Allah is He Who understands the finest mysteries, and is well-acquainted (with them).

The agreed readingHave you not seen that God sends down water from the sky and the earth turns green after it - the wording keeps the greenness going on after the rain itself has passed. God reaches into what is small as well as what is large, and He is aware of it all.
22:64#

PickthallUnto Him belongeth all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Lo! Allah, He verily is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.

Yusuf AliTo Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: for verily Allah,- He is free of all wants, Worthy of all Praise.

The agreed readingEverything in the heavens and everything in the earth is His to own. God has no need of His servants, and He is the one who deserves the praise.
22:65#

PickthallHast thou not seen how Allah hath made all that is in the earth subservient unto you? And the ship runneth upon the sea by His command, and He holdeth back the heaven from falling on the earth unless by His leave. Lo! Allah is, for mankind, Full of Pity, Merciful.

Yusuf AliSeest thou not that Allah has made subject to you (men) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the sky (rain) from failing on the earth except by His leave: for Allah is Most Kind and Most Merciful to man.

The agreed readingHave you not seen that what is in the earth was made to serve you, and that the ships run on the sea at His command, and that He holds the sky back from falling on the earth except by His leave? God is kind to people and merciful to them.

PickthallAnd He it is Who gave you life, then He will cause you to die, and then will give you life (again). Lo! man is verily an ingrate.

Yusuf AliIt is He Who gave you life, will cause you to die, and will again give you life: Truly man is a most ungrateful creature!

The agreed readingHe is the one who brought you to life, then makes you die when your term ends, then brings you to life again at the raising. And man is ungrateful for what he was given.
22:67#

PickthallUnto each nation have We given sacred rites which they are to perform; so let them not dispute with thee of the matter, but summon thou unto thy Lord. Lo! thou indeed followest right guidance.

Yusuf AliTo every People have We appointed rites and ceremonies which they must follow: let them not then dispute with thee on the matter, but do thou invite (them) to thy Lord: for thou art assuredly on the Right Way.

The agreed readingEvery community was given a rite of its own to carry out, so they are not to argue with Muhammad over the matter - and the wording is read as telling him not to be drawn into the argument either. Call them to your Lord: you are on guidance that runs straight.
22:68#

PickthallAnd if they wrangle with thee, say: Allah is Best Aware of what ye do.

Yusuf AliIf they do wrangle with thee, say, "Allah knows best what it is ye are doing."

The agreed readingAnd if they do argue, the answer is: God knows best what you are doing. The commentaries read it as a warning delivered gently.
22:69#

PickthallAllah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein ye used to differ.

Yusuf Ali"Allah will judge between you on the Day of Judgment concerning the matters in which ye differ."

The agreed readingGod will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection about the things you differed over - each side saying the opposite of the other, and neither of them able to settle it now.
22:70#

PickthallHast thou not known that Allah knoweth all that is in the heaven and the earth? Lo! it is in a record. Lo! that is easy for Allah.

Yusuf AliKnowest thou not that Allah knows all that is in heaven and on earth? Indeed it is all in a Record, and that is easy for Allah.

The agreed readingDo you not know that God knows whatever is in the heaven and the earth? All of it stands in a record, set down before it happened. And that is an easy thing for God.
22:71#

PickthallAnd they worship instead of Allah that for which He hath sent down no warrant, and that whereof they have no knowledge. For evil-doers there is no helper.

Yusuf AliYet they worship, besides Allah, things for which no authority has been sent down to them, and of which they have (really) no knowledge: for those that do wrong there is no helper.

The agreed readingThey worship, instead of God, things for which no warrant was ever sent down and about which they have no knowledge - they cannot say these are gods, because they do not know it. And the wrongdoers have no one to keep God's punishment off them.
22:72#

PickthallAnd when Our revelations are recited unto them, thou knowest the denial in the faces of those who disbelieve; they all but attack those who recite Our revelations unto them. Say: Shall I proclaim unto you worse than that? The Fire! Allah hath promised it for those who disbelieve. A hapless journey's end!

Yusuf AliWhen Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, thou wilt notice a denial on the faces of the Unbelievers! they nearly attack with violence those who rehearse Our Signs to them. Say, "Shall I tell you of something (far) worse than these Signs? It is the Fire (of Hell)! Allah has promised it to the Unbelievers! and evil is that destination!"

The agreed readingWhen God's clear signs are recited to them you can read the refusal in the faces of those who refuse - the distaste and the scowl of it - and they come close to laying hands on the one reciting. Say: shall I tell you of something worse than what you are feeling now? The Fire, which God has promised to those who refuse; and it is an evil place to arrive at.
22:73#

PickthallO mankind! A similitude is coined, so pay ye heed to it: Lo! those on whom ye call beside Allah will never create a fly though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly took something from them, they could not rescue it from it. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought!

Yusuf AliO men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!

The agreed readingPeople: a comparison has been set out, so listen to it properly. The things they call on instead of God could not create a single fly if every one of them combined to do it; and if a fly took something from them they could not get it back. The one who asks and the one asked of are both weak.
22:74#

PickthallThey measure not Allah His rightful measure. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.

Yusuf AliNo just estimate have they made of Allah: for Allah is He Who is strong and able to Carry out His Will.

The agreed readingThey did not give God the measure that is His, since they set beside Him things that cannot keep off a fly or recover what it takes. God is strong, and He prevails.
22:75#

PickthallAllah chooseth from the angels messengers, and (also) from mankind. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Seer.

Yusuf AliAllah chooses messengers from angels and from men for Allah is He Who hears and sees (all things).

The agreed readingGod chooses messengers from among the angels and messengers from among people. It came down when they asked why the reminder should be sent down on this man out of all of them. God hears what they say, and He sees who is fit to be sent.
22:76#

PickthallHe knoweth all that is before them and all that is behind them, and unto Allah all things are returned. $$A

Yusuf AliHe knows what is before them and what is behind them: and to Allah go back all questions (for decision).

The agreed readingHe knows what lies before them and what lies behind them, and every matter goes back to God in the end.
22:77#

PickthallO ye who believe! Bow down and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord, and do good, that haply ye may prosper.

Yusuf AliO ye who believe! bow down, prostrate yourselves, and adore your Lord; and do good; that ye may prosper.

The agreed readingYou who believe: bow and prostrate - which is to say, pray - and serve your Lord alone, and do good. The commentaries name among that good the keeping of kinship ties and the noble qualities of character. Then you may come through.
22:78#

PickthallAnd strive for Allah with the endeavour which is His right. He hath chosen you and hath not laid upon you in religion any hardship; the faith of your father Abraham (is yours). He hath named you Muslims of old time and in this (Scripture), that the messenger may be a witness against you, and that ye may be witnesses against mankind. So establish worship, pay the poor-due, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protecting friend. A blessed Patron and a blessed Helper!

Yusuf AliAnd strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the cult of your father Abraham. It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector - the Best to protect and the Best to help!

The agreed readingStrive for God as striving for Him is due, putting into it all the strength you have. He chose you, and He has put nothing in the religion that is beyond bearing. It is the way of your father Abraham. He named you those who submit, before this and in this, so that the Messenger would be a witness over you and you would be witnesses over the people. So establish the prayer, give the zakat, and hold fast to God: He is your patron - and an excellent patron, and an excellent helper.
